Chapter 5: The Secret She Buried

For a few seconds, nobody understood what Vanessa had just said.

The words sat in the room.

Heavy.

Impossible.

I stared at her.

“You destroyed it?””

Vanessa looked like she wanted to take the words back.

But it was too late.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You knew about the box?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

I felt something inside me break.

A small piece of trust I didn’t even realize was still there.

“No choice?””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You destroyed something my wife left behind.””

“David—”

“You lied to me.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

The sentence made me laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because it sounded exactly like something someone says when they know they have been caught.

“Protect me from what?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

That made me angry.

“Don’t look at my daughter.””

Her eyes moved back to mine.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt Lily.””

“But you did.””

The room went quiet.

Vanessa looked down.

For the first time, she didn’t have an explanation.

She didn’t have a perfect response.

She just stood there.

A woman in a wedding dress surrounded by the consequences of her own choices.

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“Tell him everything.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

“No.””

Evelyn’s voice was cold.

“Claire did.””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

I looked between them.

“How long have you both known?””

Neither answered.

“Answer me.””

Evelyn spoke first.

“Since before Claire died.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

I felt Lily’s fingers tighten around mine.

“You knew Vanessa was hiding something?””

Evelyn looked away.

“I knew Claire was afraid.””

“Afraid of Vanessa?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Again.

That silence.

I hated that silence.

“Everyone knew something except me.””

I looked at the wedding room.

The flowers.

The dress.

The decorations.

All the things I had spent months preparing.

It suddenly felt like a stage.

And I was the only person who didn’t know the script.

Vanessa walked toward me slowly.

“David, listen to me.””

I stepped back.

The movement hurt her.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t stop.

“I loved Claire.””

“Then why did she warn me?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because she misunderstood.””

“Did she?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you destroy the box?””

She had no answer.

The door opened suddenly.

A wedding assistant stood there.

“Mr. Carter?””

I turned.

“What?””

The woman looked uncomfortable.

“There’s someone asking for you.””

“Who?””

She looked at the floor.

“He said his name is Marcus Hill.””

Evelyn went completely still.

The color drained from her face.

I noticed.

“Evelyn?””

She didn’t respond.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You know him?””

Vanessa shook her head too quickly.

“No.””

But Evelyn spoke.

“He’s Claire’s investigator.””

The room froze.

“Investigator?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Claire hired him six months before she passed.””

My heart raced.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“Because Claire believed someone close to her was lying.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“That’s not true.””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“You were there when she found the bank records.””

Vanessa stopped.

I turned.

“What bank records?””

Nobody answered.

I walked toward Vanessa.

“What bank records?””

She looked trapped.

And for the first time since I entered that room…

I saw something I never thought I would see.

Fear.

Real fear.

The assistant quietly stepped away.

“Should I tell him to leave?””

Before anyone answered, a man’s voice came from the hallway.

“No.””

A tall Black man appeared in the doorway.

Late forties.

Dark suit.

Serious expression.

He looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at the locket in my hand.

“David Carter?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He reached into his coat.

“I’m Marcus Hill.””

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I was hoping you’d never have to see this.””

I stared at the envelope.

“What is it?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“It’s the last thing your wife gave me.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus, don’t.””

He ignored her.

He handed it to me.

And I saw Claire’s handwriting again.

One sentence was written across the front.

“David, if Vanessa is still beside you…”

I stopped breathing.

May you like

Marcus looked at me.

“…then you’re already in danger.””
