Chapter 11: The Father Who Never Died

The following morning, Robert and I drove to a small private club on the outskirts of Boston.

I hadn't slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the photograph.

My father.

Alive.

Standing beside Vanessa.

For twenty-three years, I had carried the memory of a man who supposedly drowned.

I had imagined his final moments countless times.

I had wondered whether he had been frightened.

Whether he had thought about me.

Whether he had called my name.

Now I was discovering that he might have spent those years living comfortably while my mother raised me alone.

"Are you ready?"" Robert asked.

I looked at the entrance.

"No.""

He nodded.

"Neither would I be.""

Inside, the club smelled of polished wood and expensive coffee.

Peter was waiting in a leather booth.

He stood when he saw me.

"Marcus.""

I shook his hand.

"Tell me everything.""

Peter glanced at Robert.

Then he sat.

"Your father was involved in a property investment business before his disappearance. He borrowed money from several people, including some very dangerous ones.""

"How much?""

"More than he could repay.""

I frowned.

"Then why fake his death?""

"Insurance money. A fresh identity. A way out.""

I stared at him.

"My mother received the insurance payment.""

"Yes.""

"Did she know?""

Peter shook his head.

"I don't think so.""

Robert opened his notebook.

"Was Vanessa involved in the business?""

"Not initially. She worked for a financial consultant who helped Richard manage his investments.""

I leaned forward.

"When did she meet my father?""

"About five years ago.""

"That's impossible. She told me she had never been to Boston before we met.""

Peter gave me a sad look.

"She lied.""

I felt my hands tighten.

"What was their relationship?""

Peter hesitated.

"Business partners, as far as I knew.""

"Did they plan my marriage?""

"I don't know.""

"Did they plan to get access to Noah's inheritance?""

Peter looked down.

"Your father knew about Sarah's trust. He asked me several times how it was structured.""

My stomach dropped.

"Why?""

"Because Sarah's grandmother had left a substantial estate. Richard believed he could use the trust to secure a new investment project.""

Robert leaned forward.

"Did he have legal authority to access it?""

"No.""

"Then how could he transfer money?""

Peter rubbed his forehead.

"That's what Daniel was supposed to handle.""

I looked at him.

"Daniel worked with my father?""

Peter nodded.

"Daniel was introduced to Richard through Vanessa.""

The pieces were beginning to fit.

But one question remained.

"Why would my father want to destroy my family?""

Peter looked at me.

"Because he believed you owed him.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Richard thought you had inherited something from him.""

"I inherited nothing. He died when I was fourteen.""

Peter gave a humorless smile.

"That's what everyone was told.""

He reached into his briefcase and removed a document.

It was an old business agreement.

My name appeared near the bottom.

I stared at it.

"What is this?""

"Your father created a holding company before he disappeared. He transferred certain assets into it using your name.""

Robert examined the document.

"How old was Marcus?""

"Fourteen.""

I looked up.

"That's impossible.""

"Your father used your birth certificate and other records. He intended to regain control of the company when you became an adult.""

I felt sick.

"Did he ever?""

Peter nodded.

"Through a series of shell companies, yes.""

Robert examined the papers.

"Who currently controls it?""

Peter answered quietly.

"Richard.""

I leaned back.

For the first time, I understood why Vanessa had been so interested in my personal documents.

My father hadn't simply faked his death.

He had built a financial structure around my identity.

And Vanessa had entered my life carrying knowledge of that structure.

"Where is he now?"" I asked.

Peter wrote an address on a napkin.

"An apartment in the city. But Marcus, be careful.""

"Why?""

"Richard doesn't like surprises.""

I stood.

"Neither do I.""

Robert caught my arm.

"We're not going there without making arrangements.""

I reluctantly sat back down.

Then my phone rang.

It was Evelyn.

"Marcus, you need to come home.""

"What happened?""

"Vanessa is here.""

I stood immediately.

"Is Noah okay?""

"He's with Lily. They're upstairs.""

"Don't let her near them.""

"I won't.""

I hung up.

Robert and I drove back.

When we entered the house, Vanessa was sitting in the living room with her coat folded neatly over her knees.

She looked completely relaxed.

My mother stood near the stairs.

Lily was beside her.

Noah was nowhere in sight.

"Where is my son?"" I asked.

Vanessa smiled.

"Good morning to you too.""

"Where is Noah?""

"Upstairs. Playing.""

I looked toward the staircase.

Then back at her.

"What are you doing here?""

She folded her hands.

"I came to discuss our marriage.""

I almost laughed.

"Our marriage?""

"Yes. I think we've both made mistakes.""

I stared at her.

"You forged my signature. You tried to have my son removed from his home. You stole his inheritance.""

Her expression hardened.

"Careful.""

"Why? Are you going to threaten me again?""

She leaned forward.

"You have no idea what your father has been doing.""

I froze.

"Where is he?""

Vanessa smiled.

"Alive, apparently.""

I stepped closer.

"How long have you known?""

"Years.""

"Why did you marry me?""

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she answered.

"Because your father asked me to.""

The room went silent.

My mother began crying.

Lily covered her mouth.

I stared at Vanessa.

"Explain.""

She sighed.

"Richard told me you were lonely. He said you needed someone who could help rebuild your life.""

"And the money?""

"That was part of the arrangement.""

I felt something break inside me.

"You used my son.""

Vanessa looked away.

"I didn't plan for things to become complicated.""

"Complicated?""

She stood.

"Noah was never supposed to be part of the financial arrangements.""

I stepped closer.

"He's my son. He's part of everything.""

Vanessa picked up her handbag.

"Then you should understand why I had to remove him.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"Why?""

"Because Sarah left him more than money.""

She looked toward the stairs.

"She left him ownership of something your father has spent twenty years trying to recover.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

Vanessa reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded document.

She placed it on the coffee table.

It was a company ownership certificate.

Noah's name appeared at the top.

Beneath it was a list of assets.

Including the property where our house stood.

I looked at Robert.

He examined the document.

Then his expression changed.

"This is genuine.""

Vanessa smiled.

"Sarah transferred the controlling interest into Noah's trust before she died.""

I couldn't speak.

She continued.

"Your father has been trying to get it back ever since.""

"Why?""

"Because the company owns more than the house.""

She leaned toward me.

"It owns the land beneath three commercial buildings in Boston. And it's worth considerably more than the trust money.""

Robert turned the page.

His eyes widened.

"Marcus...""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He pointed toward the bottom.

A clause had been highlighted.

If Noah's legal guardian were found unfit, control of the company would temporarily pass to a designated administrator.

The name of that administrator was printed clearly.

Richard Hale.

My father.

Vanessa picked up her handbag.

"Your father will be here tonight.""

May you like

Then she looked directly at me.

"And he expects his property back.""
