Chapter 8: The Accusation
I didn't recognize the woman sitting across from me.
My mother had always been the strongest person in my life.
She had raised me alone after my father died.
She had worked two jobs, skipped meals so I could eat, and spent years making sure I never felt the absence of a parent.
Now she was telling me that she had helped move my son's inheritance because my wife had threatened to expose me for something I hadn't done.
"Start from the beginning," I said.
Evelyn sat down.
"After Sarah died, Vanessa contacted me. She said she had information about the circumstances surrounding Sarah's final hospitalization.""
"What information?""
"She told me Sarah had been receiving medication that wasn't prescribed by her doctors.""
I shook my head.
"That's ridiculous. Sarah's doctors managed everything.""
"Vanessa said there had been a problem with one of the prescriptions.""
"Did she show you anything?""
My mother nodded.
"An email. It looked like it came from the hospital.""
I stared at her.
"And you believed it?""
"I was frightened.""
"For whom?""
"For you.""
I laughed without humor.
"Mom, if you thought I had something to do with Sarah's death, why didn't you ask me?""
She looked down.
"Vanessa said you were already under investigation.""
My heart pounded.
"What investigation?""
"She said Sarah's family had contacted the authorities. She claimed you had been hiding financial problems and that Sarah had discovered them before she died.""
I stepped closer.
"None of that happened.""
"I know that now.""
"No. You should have known it then.""
Evelyn wiped her eyes.
"She said she would protect Noah if I cooperated.""
I froze.
"How?""
"She said the trust money would be used to provide for him if you were arrested.""
I looked at her.
"And you gave her access?""
"Not directly. I helped move part of the money into an account she said was temporary.""
"Whose account?""
She hesitated.
"Mine.""
The room went silent.
I stared at my mother.
"You put my son's inheritance into your personal account?""
She nodded.
"Vanessa said it was only temporary.""
"And where is it now?""
"Most of it was transferred to the company.""
I closed my eyes.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I asked the only question that mattered.
"Did you take anything for yourself?""
"No.""
"Did you receive money?""
"No.""
"Did you sign anything?""
She nodded.
"Several documents.""
I walked to the window.
Outside, the afternoon sun fell across the driveway.
I could see Noah's bicycle leaning against the garage.
His little helmet was still hanging from the handlebars.
Everything looked normal.
But nothing was normal anymore.
"Mom, you need to tell Robert everything.""
"I will.""
"And you need to stop communicating with Vanessa.""
"I haven't spoken to her since last night.""
I turned.
"Are you sure?""
She nodded.
I wanted to believe her.
But trust had become something I could no longer give simply because someone shared my blood.
That evening, Robert arrived with a colleague.
He spoke privately with Evelyn for nearly an hour.
I stayed in the living room with Noah and Lily.
At one point, Lily approached me.
"Mr. Marcus?""
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Can I ask you something?""
"Of course.""
She sat beside me.
"Is Mom going to jail?""
I looked at her carefully.
"I don't know what will happen. That's for the adults to figure out.""
"Will she still love me?""
I had no easy answer.
Instead, I placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Nothing that's happening is your fault.""
She nodded.
Then she whispered:
"Mom told me not to tell anyone about the money.""
My attention sharpened.
"What money?""
She looked toward the hallway.
"She said if everything went wrong, I should tell people Dad had given it to her.""
I frowned.
"Your father?""
Lily nodded.
"She said she had screenshots.""
I exchanged a glance with Noah.
"Where are the screenshots?""
"On her old phone. She keeps it in the drawer beside her bed.""
I stood.
"Did you ever see them?""
Lily nodded.
"Once. They were messages between Mom and someone named Marcus.""
My blood ran cold.
"What?""
"She said it was you.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
I had never sent Vanessa any messages about Noah's inheritance.
But someone had clearly created a trail of evidence.
Before I could ask anything else, Robert came into the room.
"Marcus, I need you to see something.""
He handed me a printed bank statement.
There was a transfer dated two months before my wedding.
The recipient was a company called Hale Family Consulting.
I stared at the name.
"That's not my company.""
Robert nodded.
"It was registered using your personal information.""
"Who registered it?""
"We're still checking.""
He showed me another page.
A signature appeared beneath the registration details.
My signature.
Or a very convincing copy.
Then he showed me the account's correspondence address.
It was Vanessa's former apartment.
I felt sick.
"She was planning this before we got married.""
Robert nodded.
"That's a possibility.""
He lowered his voice.
"I also found something concerning in the school report. The person listed as the independent witness was not a school employee.""
"Who was it?""
"Daniel Mercer.""
I stared at him.
"He's the attorney.""
"Yes. Which raises serious questions about his involvement.""
My phone rang.
Vanessa.
I looked at Robert.
He nodded for me to answer, and I put the call on speaker.
"Hello?""
"Marcus.""
Her voice sounded strangely calm.
"Where are you?""
"That doesn't matter.""
"It matters to me.""
She laughed softly.
"You've been talking to Evelyn.""
I glanced toward my mother.
"Yes.""
"She's told you a lot of things, hasn't she?""
"Enough.""
"Then she hasn't told you the truth.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"What truth?""
Vanessa paused.
"Your mother knew Sarah was investigating you.""
"Investigating me for what?""
"Ask her what happened to the medical records.""
I turned toward Evelyn.
Her face changed.
"Vanessa, what are you talking about?""
"Ask your mother why she took Sarah's hospital records home. Ask her why she removed a document from Sarah's room the night she died.""
Evelyn stood abruptly.
"That's a lie!""
Vanessa continued.
"Your mother has been hiding something from you for years, Marcus.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Where are you?""
"Somewhere safe.""
"Come home. We need to talk.""
She laughed again.
"There's no home anymore.""
Then her voice changed.
"One more thing. Noah has something that belongs to me.""
I looked toward the hallway.
"What?""
"A little silver key. Sarah gave it to him.""
My eyes moved toward Noah.
He was sitting on the carpet, building a tower with wooden blocks.
"Why would Sarah give him a key?""
"Because she wanted him to remember where she hid the truth.""
The call ended.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Robert looked at me.
"What was that about?""
I turned toward Noah.
"Buddy, do you have a little silver key?""
He stopped playing.
His face changed.
Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small chain.
A silver key hung from it.
"I keep it with me," he whispered.
"Where did you get it?""
"Mommy gave it to me.""
My mother covered her mouth.
I knelt.
"Did she tell you what it opens?""
Noah nodded.
"A box.""
"Where is the box?""
He looked at the key.
Then at me.
"Mommy said I should only show you when someone tries to take me away.""
My heart began racing.
"Where is it, Noah?""
May you like
He pointed toward his bedroom.
"Under the floor.""
