Chapter 14: The Evidence They Never Expected

Robert arrived at the house less than twenty minutes after Lily's call.

He brought a colleague and a document examiner.

My mother was waiting in the living room.

Lily sat beside her, holding an old phone case.

Noah was upstairs with a trusted family friend.

I had insisted he stay away from the investigation.

"Show me the envelope," Robert said.

Lily handed it over.

Inside were several documents.

The first was a photocopy of Noah's birth certificate.

The second was a handwritten note.

The third was a document titled:

*BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP — FAMILY TRUST AMENDMENT.*

Robert examined it.

Then he looked at me.

"Marcus, this is serious.""

"What?""

"Someone has attempted to add another beneficiary to Noah's trust.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

Robert turned the page.

A name appeared beneath the proposed beneficiary section.

Ethan Hale.

I stared at it.

"Ethan isn't my son.""

"He's Vanessa's son.""

Lily nodded.

"Mom said Ethan deserved the money too.""

I looked at her.

"Did you know about this?""

"She told me the money was supposed to be divided between us.""

I shook my head.

"That's not what Sarah wanted.""

Robert examined the signatures.

"These documents appear to have been prepared using the same forged signature as the guardianship petition.""

He placed the papers in a folder.

Then he noticed something attached to the final page.

A small yellow sticky note.

There were three words written on it.

*Ask about twins.*

I stared at the note.

"What does that mean?""

Robert looked at me.

"Did Sarah ever mention another child?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Did she have any pregnancies before Noah?""

"She had one miscarriage years before we married.""

Robert looked back at the birth certificate.

"Then we need to verify something.""

He pointed to a small section of the document.

The hospital registration number.

There was a second number written beneath it.

I leaned closer.

It was another birth registration reference.

My stomach tightened.

"What's that?""

Robert studied it.

"It may indicate a second birth record associated with the same delivery.""

I shook my head.

"Sarah had one child. Noah.""

Lily looked confused.

"Mom said there was another baby.""

I turned toward her.

"What?""

She nodded.

"She said Noah had a brother. She said his name was Daniel.""

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

"Daniel?""

"Yes. She said he was taken away when they were babies.""

I felt dizzy.

"That's impossible.""

Robert looked at the document again.

"Marcus, we need to contact the hospital.""

Within an hour, we had located the original maternity records.

Robert's colleague made the request through the appropriate legal channels.

The hospital confirmed that Sarah had given birth to twins.

Two boys.

One had been registered as Noah Hale.

The other had been registered as Daniel Hale.

I stared at the confirmation.

"Where is he?""

The hospital records showed that the second child had been transferred to another facility following a medical emergency.

But there was no subsequent adoption record.

No death certificate.

No formal discharge record.

Just a gap.

A missing child.

I looked at the name again.

Daniel Hale.

Then I remembered the man who had called me.

Daniel Mercer.

My blood ran cold.

"Robert, find Daniel.""

He immediately began making calls.

Meanwhile, Lily sat quietly beside my mother.

I knelt in front of her.

"Did Vanessa tell you anything else about the other baby?""

She nodded.

"She said he grew up with someone who hated your family.""

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

Lily looked down.

"She said he was coming back to claim what belonged to him.""

I stood.

The phone rang.

Robert answered.

He listened for several seconds.

Then he turned toward me.

"We found Daniel Mercer.""

"Where?""

"He's outside.""

I walked to the front door.

Daniel stood on the porch holding a thick leather briefcase.

His face was pale.

"Marcus.""

I stepped aside.

"Come in.""

He placed the briefcase on the table.

"I brought everything.""

Inside were original financial documents, hospital records, emails, and several photographs.

Robert immediately began examining them.

I focused on Daniel.

"Did you know Sarah had twins?""

He went completely still.

Then he nodded.

"Yes.""

My chest tightened.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Richard made sure you never found out.""

I gripped the back of a chair.

"Where is the other child?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Alive.""

I could barely breathe.

"Where?""

He opened a separate folder.

Inside was a photograph of a young man in his twenties.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A small scar above his left eyebrow.

I stared at the picture.

The resemblance to Sarah was unmistakable.

"Who is he?""

Daniel swallowed.

"My name is Daniel Mercer, but my birth name was Daniel Hale.""

I stepped backward.

"No.""

He nodded.

"Sarah was my biological mother. Richard arranged for me to be raised under another identity after I was born.""

My hands began trembling.

"You're Noah's brother?""

Daniel nodded.

"His twin.""

I stared at him.

For a moment, I couldn't find words.

Then anger rushed through me.

"Why did you let us believe you were a stranger?""

"Because Richard told me the truth when I was twenty-one. He said Sarah had abandoned me. He told me she had chosen you and Noah.""

I shook my head.

"She didn't abandon you.""

Daniel's eyes filled.

"I know that now.""

He opened the briefcase and removed a final document.

It was a letter from Sarah.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My dear Daniel,

If you ever discover who you are, please understand that I never gave you away because I didn't love you.

I was told you had died shortly after birth. I searched for answers, but the records were changed.

I kept looking.

I never stopped loving you.

Daniel broke down.

He covered his face with both hands.

I stood there, unable to process the revelation.

My son had a twin brother.

A brother who had spent his entire life believing his mother had abandoned him.

And Richard had known.

Robert carefully placed the letter in an evidence folder.

Then he found another document.

A financial agreement signed by Richard.

It stated that Daniel would receive a portion of the company if he agreed to testify that Marcus was an unfit father.

I looked at Daniel.

"Did you sign it?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

"Did Richard offer you money?""

"Yes.""

"How much?""

"Two million dollars.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you take it?""

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

"Because I saw Noah's school photograph.""

He pulled out a small picture.

It showed Noah standing in front of his classroom.

On the back was a handwritten note.

*He looks like Mom.*

Daniel's voice broke.

"I couldn't help destroy the only family I had left.""

Robert stood.

"We have enough to challenge the guardianship petition and request an investigation into the financial transfers.""

"Will it be enough?""

"We'll make it enough.""

Then my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

"Hello?""

Her voice was cold.

"I know Daniel is with you.""

I didn't respond.

"You think you've won?""

"Your documents are in the hands of the authorities.""

She laughed.

"Then you haven't understood anything.""

"What do you want?""

"I want Noah.""

"You'll never get him.""

"Not for me, Marcus.""

She paused.

"For Richard.""

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"Why?""

"Because the company is only part of it.""

"What else?""

Her voice became almost cheerful.

"Sarah left Noah a second inheritance. Something worth far more than the buildings and the money.""

I looked at Daniel.

He went pale.

"What inheritance?""

Vanessa whispered:

"The original ownership records of the entire Hale estate. The documents that prove Richard stole it from his own family.""

I felt my blood turn cold.

"Where are they?""

She laughed.

"With Noah.""

The call ended.

I turned toward my son.

He was standing at the top of the stairs.

In his hands was a small envelope.

"Dad?""

I walked toward him.

"What is it, buddy?""

He held it out.

"Mommy told me to give you this when Grandpa came back.""

I took the envelope.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

And a note.

*The truth is not in the money. It's in the recording.*

Robert stared at the card.

Then Daniel whispered:

"That's impossible.""

I turned toward him.

"Why?""

May you like

He looked terrified.

"Because I thought Richard destroyed that recording twenty-three years ago.""
