Chapter 7: My Mother's Confession

For the first time in my life, I looked at my mother and wondered whether I actually knew her.

She stood in the kitchen doorway, one hand gripping the frame.

Behind her, Noah was still sitting at the table, carefully cutting his pancake into tiny squares.

He hadn't heard the phone conversation.

At least, I hoped he hadn't.

"Mom," I said slowly.

"What did Daniel mean?""

Evelyn looked toward Noah.

"Not in front of him.""

I turned to my son.

"Buddy, why don't you take your pancakes into the living room? Grandma and I need to talk for a minute.""

He looked between us.

"Are you angry?""

"No, sweetheart.""

He hesitated.

Then he gathered his plate and walked away.

I waited until he disappeared around the corner.

"Now tell me.""

My mother sat down.

Her eyes were already wet.

"I knew Sarah had been worried about Vanessa.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"How long?""

"Before she died.""

"How long, Mom?""

"About six weeks.""

I stepped backward.

"Six weeks?""

She nodded.

"Sarah called me one afternoon. She asked whether I knew Vanessa.""

I remembered that conversation.

Sarah had been in the hospital, and my mother had visited her regularly.

I had thought they were discussing ordinary family matters.

"What did you tell her?""

"That Vanessa had recently become involved in your life.""

"And?""

"Sarah asked me to be careful.""

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because she made me promise.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone seems to have made promises to everyone except me.""

Evelyn wiped her cheeks.

"Sarah told me she had discovered unusual activity involving Noah's trust. She suspected someone was trying to gain access to the money.""

"Did she name Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

The answer came so quickly that it felt like a slap.

I turned away.

My mother continued.

"She also said someone had approached her about changing the trust administrator. She refused.""

"Who?""

"Daniel.""

I spun around.

"What?""

"Sarah believed Daniel was helping someone access the money. She wasn't certain he was doing it willingly, but she was frightened.""

"Yet Daniel just told me Vanessa was responsible.""

"I don't know who to believe anymore.""

I stared at her.

"Did you know Vanessa before I married her?""

Evelyn looked down.

Then she nodded.

My chest tightened.

"How?""

"She came to see me.""

"When?""

"Before your wedding.""

I felt the room tilt.

"What did she want?""

"She said she loved you. She said she wanted to be a mother to Noah.""

"And you believed her?""

"I wanted to.""

"That's not an answer.""

My mother reached into her handbag and removed an old photograph.

It showed her standing outside a restaurant with a younger Vanessa.

They were smiling.

My mother looked much younger.

I had never seen the photograph before.

"She approached me because she knew I was Sarah's mother-in-law," Evelyn said.

"She wanted to understand the family before marrying you.""

I stared at the picture.

"How did she know about Sarah's money?""

"She asked.""

My hands began trembling.

"And you told her?""

"No. I told her Sarah had made arrangements for Noah, but I didn't know the details.""

I paced across the kitchen.

"Why would you keep this from me?""

My mother lowered her head.

"Because I was afraid you would reject her. You were lonely, Marcus. You were working constantly.

Noah needed a mother figure. I thought Vanessa might be good for you.""

"You thought?""

Her shoulders shook.

"I made a mistake.""

I stopped in front of her.

"Did you help her get close to me?""

She looked up.

"She asked me to introduce you to her.""

The silence that followed was unbearable.

I remembered the afternoon at the charity fundraiser.

My mother had introduced us.

Vanessa had been wearing a blue dress and had laughed at one of my jokes.

She had already known my name.

She had already known about Noah.

And she had already known that I was vulnerable.

"Was any of it real?"" I asked.

My mother started crying.

"I don't know.""

I couldn't look at her.

Then my phone vibrated.

Daniel had sent a message.

*Don't let Evelyn destroy the second letter. Sarah gave it to her before she died.*

I stared at the screen.

"Mom.""

Evelyn went completely still.

"Did Sarah give you a letter?""

She didn't answer.

"Mom, did she?""

Finally, she nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where is it?""

She pressed her lips together.

"I destroyed it.""

The words hit me like a physical blow.

"You did what?""

"I was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

"Sarah believed Vanessa had approached you for the money. She thought your relationship might be part of a larger plan.""

"And you destroyed the evidence?""

"I didn't want to believe it.""

I grabbed the edge of the counter.

"Mom, my son has been standing against a wall while everyone eats dinner. My wife has been trying to get him removed from his home. And you knew there was a possibility this woman had planned all of it?""

Evelyn covered her face.

"I didn't know what was happening inside the house.""

"You knew enough.""

She nodded.

"I know.""

I walked toward the living room.

Noah was sitting beside Lily, watching a cartoon.

He looked up when I entered.

"Dad, Grandma made more pancakes.""

I forced a smile.

"That's good, buddy.""

He held out a small piece.

"Do you want some?""

I sat beside him.

"Maybe in a minute.""

He studied my face.

"Did Grandma make you sad?""

I looked at him.

"Noah, grown-up problems are never your fault.""

He nodded.

Then he leaned against me.

I put my arm around him.

Whatever secrets the adults in this family had kept, I wasn't going to let him carry them anymore.

That afternoon, Robert called.

"Marcus, we received an update from the bank.""

I stepped into the hallway.

"What did you find?""

"Three transfers from Noah's trust were made to a company registered under Vanessa's maiden name.""

My stomach tightened.

"How much?""

"Four hundred and twenty thousand dollars in total.""

I closed my eyes.

"Can we recover it?""

"Not immediately. The company appears to have been dissolved.""

"Who authorized the transfers?""

"Daniel Mercer.""

I looked toward the kitchen.

"Is he involved?""

"His credentials were used. Whether he personally authorized the transactions is another question.""

Then Robert paused.

"There's something else. The bank has flagged an attempted withdrawal from the remaining balance.""

"When?""

"This morning.""

I checked the time.

It had happened less than two hours earlier.

"Who requested it?""

Robert lowered his voice.

"Your mother.""

I couldn't speak.

"Marcus, are you there?""

I looked toward Evelyn.

She was standing near the kitchen table, watching me.

"Yes.""

"Don't confront her until we know more. I want you to bring her in for a formal interview.""

I ended the call.

My mother slowly approached.

"You know.""

It wasn't a question.

I nodded.

"Four hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""

She closed her eyes.

"I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

She looked toward the living room.

Then she whispered:

"Vanessa told me Noah would be taken away anyway. She said the money would be safer if I helped move it.""

I stared at her.

"Did you believe her?""

Evelyn began crying.

"No.""

"Then why?""

She looked directly at me.

"Because she told me what Sarah had discovered before she died.""

"What?""

My mother took a shaking breath.

"She said Sarah hadn't died naturally.""

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything.

May you like

Then Evelyn added:

"And she said she had proof that you were the person responsible.""
