Chapter 13: The Boy Who Remembered Everything
Richard didn't move.
For the first time since arriving at my house, the confidence disappeared from his face.
He stared at Noah.
"What did you say, son?""
Noah backed away another step.
"You're the man Mommy told me to hide from.""
Richard gave a short laugh.
"That's impossible. You were too young to remember me.""
I moved between them.
"Don't speak to him.""
Richard ignored me.
"Noah, sweetheart, come here. I want to talk to you.""
"No!""
My son's voice cracked.
He ran down the remaining stairs and grabbed my hand.
I felt his fingers trembling.
Robert stepped forward.
"Mr. Hale, I suggest you leave.""
Richard finally looked at him.
"This is a family matter.""
"Not anymore. You have been served with notice that all communication concerning the child must go through legal counsel.""
Richard smiled.
"Then you'll understand that I have every intention of seeing him in court tomorrow.""
He turned toward the door.
Before leaving, he looked at Noah one more time.
"Tell your father what your mother told you about the hospital.""
Noah buried his face against my side.
Richard walked away.
I closed the door and locked it.
Then I knelt in front of my son.
"Buddy, what did you mean?""
Noah was crying.
"Mommy said I had to hide if the man with the gold watch came back.""
My heart stopped.
"Did you see him before?""
He nodded.
"When?""
"At the hospital.""
I looked at Robert.
He immediately took out his notebook.
"Noah, can you tell us what happened?""
My son wiped his cheeks.
"I was playing with my toy car. Mommy was sleeping. Then the man came into her room.""
"Was he alone?""
"No. There was another man.""
"Did you hear them talking?""
Noah nodded.
"Grandpa said Mommy had to sign something.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What did Mommy say?""
"She said no.""
Noah's voice became quieter.
"Then Grandpa got angry. He told her that if she didn't sign, Daddy would lose everything.""
I sat down beside him.
"Did you tell anyone?""
He shook his head.
"Mommy told me to hide under the bed.""
Robert stopped writing.
"Did you hide?""
"Yes.""
Noah looked toward the window.
"I saw his shoes. They were black and shiny.""
He paused.
"Then I heard Mommy crying.""
My eyes burned.
"What happened next?""
"He said something about the medicine.""
Robert leaned forward.
"What exactly?""
Noah frowned, concentrating.
"He said, 'The next dose will take care of the problem.''"
The room went silent.
I could barely breathe.
My son continued.
"Then the other man said he didn't want to do it.""
"Did you see the other man's face?""
Noah nodded.
"He had glasses.""
I looked at Robert.
Daniel.
It had to be Daniel.
But we still didn't know whether he had been involved willingly or had tried to stop what happened.
"Did Mommy see you?""
Noah nodded.
"After they left, she called me out. She was crying, but she smiled.""
His little voice broke.
"She told me to remember the man with the watch. She said if he ever came back, I should tell Daddy.""
I pulled him into my arms.
"I'm sorry, buddy.""
He shook his head.
"She also said something else.""
"What?""
Noah looked directly at me.
"She said Grandpa wasn't really Grandpa anymore.""
I closed my eyes.
Robert quietly stepped away to make a phone call.
Within an hour, we were at his office.
Noah sat with a children's book while I spoke to Daniel over a secure video call.
Daniel appeared exhausted.
His tie was loose, and there were dark circles beneath his eyes.
"Marcus, I heard Richard visited your house.""
"He's filed an emergency guardianship petition.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Of course he has.""
"Tell me what happened at the hospital.""
Daniel looked down.
"I was there.""
My hands tightened.
"Did you see my father?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know what he intended to do?""
"I suspected he was trying to pressure Sarah into signing over control of the company. I didn't know he would interfere with her treatment.""
"Then why didn't you report him?""
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of Richard?""
"Of what he knew about me.""
He took a breath.
"Several years earlier, I had helped Richard establish the financial structure that eventually became the Hale holding company. I believed I was helping him protect legitimate investments. When I discovered the accounts were being used to hide money, I tried to withdraw.""
"And?""
"He threatened to destroy my career. He had copies of documents showing that I had signed transactions without properly verifying the underlying assets.""
I stared at him.
"So you helped him steal from Noah.""
"At first, yes.""
The admission hung in the air.
Daniel continued.
"But when Sarah discovered what was happening, she contacted me. She had found the original trust documents and evidence of Richard's financial activities. I agreed to help her.""
"Did you know Vanessa?""
"Yes. She was working with Richard.""
"Did you introduce her to my mother?""
"No.""
"Did you help her marry me?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Richard arranged that himself.""
I leaned closer.
"Why?""
"Because he needed someone close to you. Someone who could influence your decisions and eventually create a reason to remove Noah from your care.""
My stomach twisted.
"How long had this been planned?""
"Years.""
I looked at Noah.
He was turning the pages of his book, completely unaware of the enormity of the conversation.
"Did Sarah know she was in danger?""
Daniel nodded.
"She knew Richard was capable of doing terrible things. But she didn't believe he would hurt her physically.""
I stared at him.
"What happened that night?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Richard asked me to bring a revised medication authorization to the hospital. He claimed Sarah had already agreed to it. When I arrived, she refused to sign.""
"And the medication?""
"I later discovered that someone had altered the dosage instructions.""
"Who?""
"I don't know.""
"You're telling me you don't know?""
Daniel's voice cracked.
"I was the one who brought the documents. I should have questioned them. I should have contacted the doctors. I didn't.""
He looked away.
"Sarah died three hours later.""
I felt something inside me collapse.
"Why didn't you tell the police?""
"I was terrified. Richard told me he had enough evidence to implicate me in financial fraud. He said if I spoke, I would spend the rest of my life in prison.""
I stood.
"You let him get away with it.""
"Yes.""
"While my son was being threatened?""
Daniel lowered his head.
"Yes.""
I wanted to hit him.
Instead, I asked the most important question.
"Do you have evidence?""
Daniel nodded.
"I have the original medication authorization, the hospital access records, and the correspondence between Richard and Vanessa.""
"Where?""
"In a secure storage facility. I can bring everything tomorrow.""
"Tomorrow is too late. Noah's hearing is in the morning.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Then I'll come tonight.""
The video call ended.
Robert walked back into the room.
"I've spoken to the prosecutor's office. They're reviewing the financial documents and the hospital records.""
"Can we stop the hearing?""
"We can challenge the petition, but we need evidence.""
I looked at Noah.
Then I looked at the blue notebook.
And suddenly, I remembered something.
The notebook had contained a sentence that wasn't written in Noah's handwriting.
*IF YOU TELL YOUR FATHER, HE WILL LEAVE YOU TOO.*
Vanessa had written it.
She had left evidence in a child's notebook because she believed nobody would question her.
Now I understood something.
She had never been careful because she was innocent.
She had been careless because she thought nobody would believe an eight-year-old.
I turned to Robert.
"Get the notebook photographed. Every page. Every date.""
He nodded.
"Already arranged.""
Then my phone rang.
It was Lily.
"Mr. Marcus?""
"What's wrong?""
Her voice was shaking.
"Mom just called me.""
I stood.
"What did she say?""
"She said I need to tell the judge that Noah attacked me.""
My jaw tightened.
"Did you tell her no?""
"Yes.""
Lily started crying.
"Then she said if I don't help her, she'll tell everyone what I did with the money.""
I frowned.
"What money, Lily?""
She hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"Mom made me sign something last month. She said it was just a school form.""
My stomach dropped.
"What did you sign?""
"I don't know. But she took my fingerprints too.""
I looked at Robert.
He immediately opened his laptop.
Lily continued.
"Mr. Marcus, I found another envelope in Mom's old phone case.""
"What was inside?""
"A picture of Noah's birth certificate.""
I froze.
May you like
Then she said the words that changed everything.
"On the back, Mom wrote that Noah wasn't supposed to be the only heir.""
