Chapter 9: What Sarah Left Behind
We found the loose floorboard beneath Noah's bookshelf.
It took nearly twenty minutes to move the furniture and remove the narrow wooden panel.
Noah watched carefully as I lifted it.
Beneath the floor was a small metal box wrapped in an old yellow scarf.
I recognized the scarf immediately.
Sarah used to wear it during winter.
I sat back on my heels.
"Is this the box?""
Noah nodded.
"Mommy said it was our secret.""
I held it carefully.
The silver key fit the lock.
There was a soft click.
Inside were three things.
A small USB drive.
A photograph.
And another envelope.
My name was written across the front.
*For Marcus. Only if someone tries to separate you from Noah.*
I stared at the handwriting.
My mother sat down on the edge of the bed.
Robert moved closer.
"Don't open anything until we've documented it.""
I nodded.
He took photographs of the box and its contents.
Then he carefully placed the USB drive into an evidence bag.
The envelope remained in my hand.
I opened it.
Sarah's letter was shorter than the first.
Marcus,
If you've found this, something has happened that I was afraid of.
I need you to know that I loved you. I loved our little boy more than anything in this world.
I also need you to understand that someone close to us has been trying to gain control of Noah's inheritance.
I discovered that the money was being moved through a company that didn't exist when I first signed the trust agreement.
The person behind it has access to private family information.
I stopped reading.
Robert leaned closer.
"Keep going.""
I continued.
I believe the person has been watching our family for some time.
I have kept copies of the original documents, the financial correspondence, and a recording of a conversation that frightened me.
The USB contains everything I could preserve.
Then came the final paragraph.
There is one more thing. If Vanessa becomes part of your life, please don't assume she is acting alone. She has been receiving help from someone who knows you better than you realize.
I lowered the letter.
Robert looked at me.
"That USB may be important.""
My mother was crying quietly.
"Sarah knew.""
I turned toward her.
"She knew what?""
"She knew someone was trying to get close to you.""
"Did she ever tell you who?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"She only said she was frightened of someone in the family.""
Robert placed the USB drive into his laptop after making a forensic copy.
A folder appeared.
Inside were scanned documents, financial records, photographs, and several audio files.
One file was named:
*THE NIGHT BEFORE MY LAST HOSPITAL VISIT.*
I stared at the screen.
"Play it.""
Robert nodded.
A woman's voice filled the room.
Sarah.
I recognized her immediately.
"Please stop pretending you care about Noah.""
My chest tightened.
A second voice answered.
A man's voice.
"You don't understand what you're doing.""
Sarah sounded angry.
"I understand perfectly. You're moving money that belongs to my son.""
"You're making accusations you can't prove.""
"I have the records.""
There was a pause.
Then the man spoke again.
"Listen to me. If you tell Marcus, you'll destroy everything.""
Sarah laughed bitterly.
"You already destroyed it.""
The recording crackled.
Then the man said something that made me stop breathing.
"Vanessa was never supposed to marry him.""
Robert paused the recording.
Nobody moved.
I looked at him.
"Play that again.""
He did.
The same sentence.
*Vanessa was never supposed to marry him.*
My mother stood up.
"Who is that?""
Robert looked at the audio file details.
"We need a professional analysis to establish the speaker's identity.""
I stared at the screen.
Then I heard another sound.
A door closing.
Sarah spoke again.
"Why are you doing this?""
The man answered.
"Because you were supposed to die before you found out.""
My mother gasped.
Robert immediately stopped the recording.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was Noah breathing beside me.
I turned toward him.
He had been sitting on the floor throughout the entire conversation.
His eyes were wet.
"Buddy, you don't have to listen to this.""
He nodded.
Then he asked a question that made me put the laptop aside.
"Did Mommy know she was going to die?""
I knelt beside him.
"I don't know, sweetheart.""
He looked at the photograph from the box.
It showed Sarah holding him in a hospital bed.
"She told me she was going somewhere I couldn't follow.""
I pulled him close.
"She loved you, Noah. Every day.""
He pressed his face against my shoulder.
"I miss her.""
"I know.""
For several minutes, I held him.
Then Robert's phone rang.
He stepped into the hallway to answer.
When he returned, his expression was grave.
"Marcus, I need you to come with me.""
"Why?""
"Someone has filed a formal complaint against you.""
I stared at him.
"About what?""
He hesitated.
"Sarah's death.""
My stomach dropped.
"What?""
"There's been a report alleging that you deliberately interfered with her medical treatment.""
I felt the room spin.
"That's insane.""
"I know. But there's something else.""
He placed his phone on the bed.
A photograph appeared on the screen.
It showed a document from Sarah's hospital records.
At the bottom was a signature authorizing a change to her medication schedule.
My name appeared beneath it.
I had never seen the document before.
Then Robert enlarged the image.
The date was visible.
It was the night Sarah died.
My mother covered her mouth.
"Marcus...""
I shook my head.
"I didn't sign that.""
Robert nodded.
"I believe you. But we need to find out who did.""
I stared at the document.
Then I noticed something in the corner.
A witness signature.
The letters were small, but unmistakable.
E. Hale.
My mother's initials.
I turned toward her.
She was already crying.
"Mom?""
She shook her head.
"Please, Marcus.""
"Did you sign this?""
She covered her face.
"I didn't know what it was.""
"What did you sign?""
Her voice broke.
"Vanessa told me it was permission for Sarah to receive additional treatment.""
I stepped backward.
"Vanessa?""
Evelyn nodded.
"She came to the hospital that night. She said Sarah was suffering and wanted to make things easier for her.""
I stared at my mother.
"Vanessa was at the hospital?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"Just before Sarah died.""
I couldn't move.
For months, I had believed Vanessa entered my life after Sarah's death.
But the recording, the financial documents, and now this hospital record suggested something much darker.
I picked up the photograph of Sarah and Noah.
On the back, in Sarah's handwriting, were five words I hadn't noticed before.
*Find out who opened the door.*
I looked up.
"What door?""
My mother began trembling.
Robert turned toward her.
"Evelyn, what is he talking about?""
She shook her head.
Then she whispered something that made the room go silent.
"The night Sarah died, I saw someone leave her hospital room.""
I stepped toward her.
"Who?""
She looked at Noah, then back at me.
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"It was your father.""
My father had been dead for twenty-three years.
And suddenly, I understood that the secrets surrounding my family were much older than Vanessa's arrival.
Robert slowly closed the laptop.
"Marcus," he said, "I think we need to find out who has been using your father's identity.""
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared from Daniel Mercer.
*I know you found Sarah's recording. Don't trust the voice you heard. The man in that recording is not who you think he is.*
May you like
Then another message arrived.
*And Marcus, your father may not have been dead when Sarah met him.*
