Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Lily's Tears
Lily came downstairs holding a pink tablet against her chest.
She was twelve years old, tall for her age, with long brown hair that fell over one shoulder.
Her eyes were red.
When she saw Noah standing beside me, she immediately looked away.
Vanessa placed a hand on her daughter's back.
"Tell Marcus what happened last Tuesday.""
Lily shook her head.
"Mom, please.""
"Don't be afraid, sweetheart. Your stepfather deserves to know.""
I looked between them.
"What happened last Tuesday?""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Noah hurt Lily. He pushed her, made her cry, and then lied about it.""
I turned toward my son.
"Noah?""
He looked terrified.
"I didn't push her.""
Vanessa gave a short laugh.
"Of course you didn't.""
My mother stepped forward.
"Maybe we should hear both sides.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Nobody asked you.""
I raised my hand.
"Enough. Lily, can you tell me what happened?""
The girl stared at the floor.
For a few seconds, she said nothing.
Then Vanessa squeezed her shoulder.
"Go ahead.""
Lily's lips trembled.
"He took my bracelet.""
"What bracelet?"" I asked.
"The silver one Grandma gave me.""
Vanessa nodded triumphantly.
"See?""
I turned to Noah.
"Did you take it?""
He shook his head.
"No, Dad.""
"Then where is it?""
"I don't know.""
Vanessa pulled her phone from her pocket.
"I have proof.""
She tapped the screen and showed me a photograph.
It was a silver bracelet resting on Noah's bedroom desk.
"Found it in his room," she said.
"He stole it, and when Lily confronted him, he pushed her.""
I looked at the photograph.
"When was this taken?""
"Tuesday afternoon.""
"Who took it?""
"I did.""
"Why were you in Noah's bedroom?""
Vanessa blinked.
"Because Lily told me her bracelet was missing.""
I looked at Lily.
"Did you see Noah take it?""
She opened her mouth.
Vanessa interrupted.
"Marcus, please. We don't need to turn this into an interrogation.""
I ignored her.
"Lily, I won't be angry with you. I just want to know what happened.""
Lily's fingers tightened around her tablet.
"I don't know.""
Vanessa's face changed.
"Sweetheart.""
Lily looked at her mother.
"Mom, I said I don't know.""
A silence settled over the room.
I noticed Noah watching Lily.
There was something strange in his expression.
Not anger.
Not resentment.
Concern.
"Did you lose the bracelet?"" I asked Lily.
She nodded slightly.
"Maybe.""
"And you think Noah took it?""
"I don't know.""
Vanessa let out an exasperated sigh.
"Wonderful. Now she's confused because you're putting pressure on her.""
My mother stepped closer to the table.
"Vanessa, I think everyone needs to calm down.""
"You're the reason this family is falling apart!""
"No," Evelyn replied.
"I'm the reason someone finally knows what's happening.""
Vanessa's phone rang.
She looked at the screen and immediately walked toward the kitchen.
"Excuse me.""
I watched her disappear around the corner.
Then I turned to Lily.
"Would you like some water?""
She nodded.
I poured a glass and placed it in front of her.
She didn't touch it.
Instead, she looked toward the kitchen.
"Is Mom listening?""
"No.""
She hesitated.
Then she leaned closer.
"Can I tell you something?""
I pulled out a chair.
"Of course.""
Lily glanced at Noah.
"Can he stay?""
"He's not going anywhere.""
She looked down at her tablet.
"Mom told me not to talk about the bracelet.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why?""
"Because she said it would make everything easier.""
"What would?""
Lily's eyes filled.
"Getting Noah to leave.""
The room went completely still.
Noah's face went pale.
I leaned forward.
"What do you mean?""
Lily wiped her nose with her sleeve.
"Mom said if everyone thought Noah was stealing and hurting me, you would send him to live with someone else.""
I stared at her.
"Did she tell you to say he stole the bracelet?""
Lily nodded.
"She said I should cry if anyone asked.""
My hands curled into fists beneath the table.
"Why did you agree?""
Lily began crying.
"Because Mom said if Noah stayed, she might have to send me away too.""
My mother covered her mouth.
I looked at Noah.
He was staring at Lily.
Then, unexpectedly, he moved toward her.
"It's okay," he whispered.
Lily cried harder.
"I'm sorry, Noah.""
He shook his head.
"You can have my crackers.""
I closed my eyes for a moment.
Even now, after everything he'd endured, my son was offering food to the person he believed had helped hurt him.
I pulled another chair closer.
"Lily, you can tell me the truth. You're not in trouble.""
She nodded.
Then she opened her tablet.
"I saved something.""
Vanessa's voice suddenly came from the kitchen.
"Lily!""
The girl flinched.
I looked toward the doorway.
Vanessa appeared holding her phone.
"What are you doing?""
"Talking.""
"Give me your tablet, Lily.""
Lily clutched it tighter.
"No.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Don't make me ask again.""
I stood.
"She's allowed to keep her tablet.""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"Marcus, this is between me and my daughter.""
"And Noah is my son. Funny how you only want family boundaries when they protect you.""
She stared at me.
For the first time, I saw genuine anger beneath her carefully maintained expression.
"You're destroying everything we've built.""
I shook my head.
"No. I'm finally looking at it.""
Vanessa turned toward Lily.
"Give me the tablet.""
Lily looked at me.
I nodded.
She unlocked it and opened a video.
The date was three weeks earlier.
The recording showed the kitchen.
Vanessa stood near the counter, speaking to someone outside the frame.
Then Noah entered.
He was holding a piece of paper.
"Mom," he said in the video, "can I ask you something?""
Vanessa didn't turn around.
"What?""
"Can I call Dad?""
"He's working.""
"But I miss him.""
"I said no.""
Noah lowered his head.
Then he asked the question that made my stomach twist.
"Did I do something bad?""
Vanessa turned.
"Why would you ask that?""
"Because you said I make everyone unhappy.""
She walked toward him.
"Listen carefully. Your father has a new family now. If you keep behaving like this, he'll realize how much easier things would be without you.""
The video continued.
Noah started crying.
Vanessa pointed toward the wall.
"Stand there. And don't move until I tell you.""
I stopped breathing.
That was the exact scene I had walked into tonight.
The same wall.
The same folded hands.
The same frightened expression.
Except now I knew it wasn't an isolated punishment.
It was a routine.
I turned toward Vanessa.
She snatched at the tablet.
"That's private!""
I moved between her and Lily.
"Don't touch her.""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"That video doesn't show the whole story!""
"Then tell me the whole story.""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
My mother reached for the tablet and paused the recording.
"Marcus, there's something else.""
I looked at her.
"What now?""
She pointed to the video timeline.
"Look at the date.""
I did.
Three weeks earlier.
Then I noticed a second video in the folder.
It was labeled with yesterday's date.
I opened it.
The screen showed the dining room, empty except for the table.
Vanessa entered carrying a folder.
She sat in my chair, opened the folder, and began arranging several documents.
Then she picked up her phone.
Her voice was perfectly clear.
"Daniel, it's me. I think we're ready. Marcus still believes Noah is just going through a difficult phase.""
She paused.
Then she laughed.
"Once the school counselor signs the report, he'll have no choice but to send the boy away.""
I felt the room tilt.
My mother whispered, "School counselor?""
Vanessa lunged toward the tablet.
But Lily pulled it away.
"Mom, you said you weren't going to do that!""
Vanessa froze.
I slowly turned toward her.
"What report?""
She said nothing.
"What school counselor, Vanessa?""
Her eyes moved toward the front door.
Then toward the stairs.
Finally, she looked directly at me.
And she said something I would remember for the rest of my life.
"You weren't supposed to find out until Monday.""
I looked at the tablet again.
The video had captured the folder clearly.
At the top was Noah's full name.
Beneath it were the words:
*CHILD WELFARE EVALUATION — REQUEST FOR EMERGENCY REMOVAL.*
And beside the signature line was a name I recognized.
My own.
May you like
Except I had never signed it.
*Someone had forged my signature.*
