Chapter 12: The Price of a Child
I waited until Vanessa left before saying anything.
The front door closed.
Her car engine started.
Then the sound faded down the street.
Robert remained at the coffee table, studying the ownership certificate.
My mother stood near the stairs.
Lily was holding her hand.
And Noah was watching us from the top step.
"Dad?""
I looked up.
"Come here, buddy.""
He descended slowly.
When he reached me, he held out a folded drawing.
It showed a house with four people standing outside.
Above them, he had written:
*OUR FAMILY.*
I looked at the picture.
Then at him.
"That's beautiful.""
He smiled faintly.
"Can we keep it?""
"Forever.""
I placed it on the coffee table, away from the legal documents.
Then I turned toward Robert.
"Explain the ownership clause.""
Robert removed his glasses.
"Sarah transferred the controlling interest in the company to Noah's trust. That means the company belongs to the trust, not to you or your father.""
"Then why can Richard take control?""
"Only if a court determines that Noah's legal guardian is unfit and the conditions in this agreement are met.""
I looked at the document again.
"So Vanessa needed the school report.""
"Exactly. If she could establish that Noah was dangerous or that you were unable to care for him, she could create grounds for an emergency guardianship hearing.""
My mother sank into a chair.
"She wanted the court to remove Noah.""
Robert nodded.
"And Richard would become the temporary administrator.""
I felt sick.
"Why would a court give control to someone who has been declared dead?""
Robert pointed toward another section.
"The agreement allows an administrator's legal representative to act on his behalf. Richard appears to have established a new legal identity.""
I stared at the document.
"So my father could control everything without ever appearing in court.""
"That's the apparent plan.""
I looked toward the stairs.
Noah was still standing there.
He was listening.
I walked over and knelt.
"Buddy, I need you to do something for me.""
He nodded.
"What's that?""
"Whatever happens over the next few days, I want you to remember something. You are not a problem. You are not responsible for grown-up decisions. And nobody gets to decide whether you're loved based on paperwork.""
He looked at me.
"Even Grandpa?""
I hesitated.
"Even Grandpa.""
Noah nodded.
Then he whispered:
"Vanessa said Grandpa would take me somewhere.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Did she say where?""
He shook his head.
"She said I would have a big room and new toys. But I wouldn't see you.""
I pulled him into a hug.
"That isn't happening.""
He held me tightly.
"I don't want new toys.""
"I know.""
"I just want you.""
I closed my eyes.
"Then that's what you'll have.""
Later that afternoon, Robert arranged for Noah and Lily to stay with my mother while he and I reviewed the company's records.
We discovered that Richard had established a network of businesses under different names.
Some were real.
Some existed only on paper.
Several had received money from the trust.
But one transaction stood out.
A payment of $75,000 had been made to a private investigator six months before my wedding.
The invoice described the work as:
*Family background research — Marcus Hale.*
I stared at the screen.
"He was investigating me.""
Robert nodded.
"Apparently.""
There were several attachments.
Photographs of me leaving work.
Photographs of Noah at school.
Photographs of my mother visiting our old house.
Then I saw a photograph of Sarah.
It had been taken outside the hospital.
She was sitting in a wheelchair.
A man stood beside her.
Richard.
My father.
I felt my chest tighten.
The photograph was dated two days before she died.
I zoomed in.
Sarah was looking directly at the camera.
Her expression wasn't frightened.
It was angry.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten note:
*She knows about the second account.*
I looked at Robert.
"What second account?""
He began searching through the financial records.
After several minutes, he found a reference to a dormant company registered overseas.
It had been established under Sarah's maiden name.
The company had received several large deposits over the years.
The latest balance was listed as $2.1 million.
I stared at the figure.
"That's Noah's?""
"Possibly. We need to trace the ownership.""
Robert opened another document.
It contained a list of authorized representatives.
One name appeared beside the account.
Daniel Mercer.
I leaned back.
"So Daniel may have been helping Sarah protect the money.""
"Or he may have been helping someone steal it. We need his explanation.""
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
"Marcus, it's Daniel.""
His voice sounded strained.
"Where are you?""
"I need you to listen carefully. Richard knows you've found the documents.""
"Vanessa told me he's coming tonight.""
"Then you need to leave the house.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because he's not coming alone.""
"Who is he bringing?""
Daniel paused.
"Someone from the family court.""
I stood.
"What?""
"Richard has arranged an emergency guardianship application. He's claiming that Noah is in immediate danger because of your instability.""
I felt my blood boil.
"That's a lie.""
"I know.""
"Then help me stop it.""
"I have the original trust documents. I'll bring them.""
"Where?""
"To your house.""
"No. Meet us at Robert's office.""
Daniel was silent.
Then he said, "Marcus, there's something I haven't told you.""
"What?""
"The second account wasn't created by Sarah.""
I looked at Robert.
"Who created it?""
"Richard.""
My stomach dropped.
"Why would he put money in an account under Sarah's name?""
"Because he was hiding money from the people he owed. Sarah discovered it and threatened to report him.""
I gripped the phone.
"Was that why she died?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"I have reason to believe her medical treatment was deliberately interfered with.""
I felt the room go cold.
"By whom?""
"I don't know yet. But I have the original hospital medication records.""
"Bring them.""
"I will.""
The call ended.
Robert immediately began making arrangements.
We agreed that Noah and Lily would stay with Evelyn at a secure location until the legal situation was clearer.
But before we could leave, someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
I looked through the glass.
An older man stood on the porch.
He wore a dark coat.
His hair was almost entirely gray.
A gold watch with a cracked leather strap was visible beneath his sleeve.
My father.
Richard Hale.
I opened the door.
For several seconds, we simply stared at each other.
Then he smiled.
"Marcus.""
His voice was exactly as I remembered it.
Older.
Rougher.
But unmistakably his.
I couldn't move.
He looked past me toward the living room.
"Where's my grandson?""
I stepped into the doorway.
"You're not coming inside.""
He sighed.
"Still stubborn. Just like your mother.""
"Don't talk about her.""
His smile disappeared.
"Then perhaps we should discuss the business.""
I looked at him.
"You mean the business you stole using my identity?""
He shrugged.
"Everything I built was intended for you.""
"You abandoned me.""
"I protected you.""
"You let my mother believe you were dead.""
"She was better off believing that.""
I felt my hands shaking.
"And Sarah?""
His expression changed.
For a fraction of a second, I saw something dark behind his eyes.
"Sarah made unfortunate decisions.""
"Did you interfere with her treatment?""
He looked directly at me.
Then he said:
"You should be careful about asking questions you cannot afford to have answered.""
Robert appeared behind me.
"Mr. Hale, I'm Robert Collins. You are not welcome on this property. We will communicate through legal counsel.""
Richard barely glanced at him.
Instead, he reached into his coat and removed a sealed envelope.
He handed it to me.
"Open it.""
I looked at the front.
It bore the official seal of the family court.
I tore it open.
Inside was an emergency guardianship petition.
The applicant was Richard Hale.
The requested subject was Noah Hale.
And the hearing date was tomorrow morning.
I looked up.
"How did you file this?""
Richard smiled.
"Because your wife provided the evidence.""
"She's not my wife anymore.""
"That won't matter.""
He stepped closer.
"By tomorrow afternoon, Marcus, you'll have two choices.""
I stared at him.
"What choices?""
"Accept the settlement and walk away from the company.""
"And if I refuse?""
His eyes moved toward the stairs.
"Then the court will decide whether your son belongs with you.""
I felt my blood turn to ice.
Richard adjusted his watch.
Then he delivered the final blow.
"Oh, and one more thing. I wouldn't rely on your mother to testify for you.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
He smiled.
"Because she already signed a statement saying you were responsible for Sarah's death.""
From somewhere behind me, Noah screamed.
"DAD! DON'T LET HIM TAKE ME!""
I turned.
My son was standing halfway down the stairs, crying.
Richard looked at him.
For the first time, his expression softened.
"Hello, Noah.""
Noah immediately stepped backward.
Then he whispered something that made my father stop smiling.
"I remember you.""
Richard's face went pale.
Noah clutched the railing.
May you like
"You're the man Mommy told me to hide from.""
And suddenly, my father looked afraid.
