Chapter 10: The Truth Hidden in the Drive

Vanessa was crying.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Tears.

Real tears.

The kind she had spent years refusing to show.

I stared at her.

“Why are you crying?””

She wiped her face quickly.

“I don’t know.””

The answer was too fast.

Too practiced.

I stepped closer.

“You do.””

Vanessa looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the woman who raised me.

The woman who packed my lunches.

The woman who sat beside my bed when I had nightmares as a child.

Then I remembered the stage.

The photograph tearing in her hands.

The secrets.

The lies.

And I didn’t know which version of her was real.

“Who raised Maya?”” Elijah asked.

The room went quiet.

His question was simple.

But everyone understood what he meant.

Vanessa looked at him.

“I did.””

Elijah shook his head.

“That’s not what she meant.””

Robert stood.

“Enough.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“I want to know.””

I held up the flash drive.

“My mother left this for me.””

Nobody argued.

Because they all knew.

The truth was coming whether they wanted it or not.

I found an old laptop in the storage room.

The screen flickered when I turned it on.

Everyone gathered around.

Nobody sat.

Nobody breathed normally.

The flash drive appeared.

One folder.

One file.

MAYA_FINAL.

My hands shook.

I clicked it.

A video opened.

The quality was poor.

The image was dark.

But then I saw her.

My mother.

My knees almost gave out.

She looked tired.

Older than the pictures I knew.

But alive.

“Hi, Maya.””

I covered my mouth.

Hearing her voice after all these years felt impossible.

“I don’t know when you’ll see this.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“But if you’re watching, then I wasn’t able to tell you myself.””

The room stayed silent.

My mother took a deep breath.

“I need you to understand something before you hear anything else.””

She paused.

“Your father did not abandon you.””

Elijah closed his eyes.

My mother continued.

“Everyone will tell you different versions of what happened. Some because they are afraid. Some because they think they are protecting you.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But the truth is, Elijah loved you before you were even born.””

I looked at him.

He was crying silently.

My mother continued.

“He made mistakes. I made mistakes. But neither of us deserved to have our daughter taken away from us.””

My heart stopped.

Taken away.

Not lost.

Not separated.

Taken.

The video paused for a moment.

Then she continued.

“Maya, there is something you need to know about Vanessa.””

Everyone froze.

I looked at my stepmother.

Vanessa looked away.

My mother’s voice continued.

“Vanessa came into my life when I needed help.””

I frowned.

Help?

“I trusted her.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“But trust can become dangerous when someone else decides they know what is best for you.””

The room felt colder.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“Vanessa, if you are watching this, then I need you to hear me.””

Vanessa looked up.

“You promised me.””

A tear rolled down Vanessa’s cheek.

“You promised you would never let Maya believe Elijah abandoned her.””

My breathing stopped.

Vanessa whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

The video continued.

“But I also know you were not the person who started this.””

I looked up.

Not the person who started this.

Meaning someone else was involved.

My mother continued.

“There is someone who wanted Elijah removed from our lives.””

The video glitched.

Her face distorted.

Then returned.

“I found evidence.””

She held up a folder.

“Evidence that could expose everything.””

I leaned closer.

“What evidence?””

My mother looked frightened.

“The person responsible is someone close enough to hurt us.””

The video suddenly cut.

The room went black.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the frozen screen.

“That’s it?””

Elijah walked closer.

“No.””

He pointed at the drive.

“There may be more.””

I checked the folder.

Nothing.

Only one file.

Then I noticed something.

A hidden folder.

Password protected.

My heart raced.

“What?””

Robert stepped closer.

“What is it?””

I looked at the screen.

“A locked folder.””

Vanessa whispered:

“What’s the name?””

I clicked.

The title appeared.

THE NIGHT SHE DISAPPEARED.

Nobody moved.

Then Robert’s phone rang.

Again.

This time he looked at the screen and immediately rejected the call.

I saw the name.

I saw his face.

And I knew.

He wasn’t hiding a stranger.

He was hiding someone he knew.

“Who was that?”” I asked.

Robert didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Dad.””

His eyes filled with fear.

“It was your uncle.””

I froze.

“My uncle?””

Robert nodded slowly.

“The man in the photograph.””

The room went silent.

May you like

Because suddenly the person my mother warned me about had a name.

And he was family.
