Chapter 8: The Room Beneath the Memories

Robert didn’t answer the phone.

It kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The sound filled the hallway.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, the call stopped.

I watched Robert lower his phone slowly.

“Who was it?””

He looked at me.

“No one.””

I stared at him.

“Really?””

His silence gave him away.

Elijah stepped forward.

“Who called you?””

Robert looked angry.

Not at Elijah.

At himself.

“This isn’t the place.””

I shook my head.

“You said that before.””

I grabbed my graduation cap from the chair.

“I’m not leaving until I know where we’re going.””

Robert looked at me.

“You’re serious.””

“Yes.””

A long pause followed.

Then he sighed.

“The storage building.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“No.””

Robert looked at her.

“It’s time.””

I noticed the way she reacted.

Like those two words meant something.

Like they had been waiting years to say them.

The four of us left the hallway together.

Nobody talked.

The auditorium lights followed us through the open doors.

Students laughed.

Families hugged.

Cameras flashed.

A normal graduation day.

My graduation day.

But I felt like I was walking through someone else’s memory.

We reached a quiet room near the side of the building.

Robert unlocked the door.

Inside were boxes.

Old documents.

Photographs.

Things nobody had touched in years.

Elijah stood frozen.

“She kept all of this?””

Robert nodded.

“She didn’t trust anyone else.””

I looked at him.

“She trusted you.””

That hurt him.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked down.

“Because I failed her.””

The answer surprised me.

I expected excuses.

Not guilt.

I walked inside.

Dust covered the shelves.

A single box sat on a table.

My name was written on it.

MAYA.

My breath caught.

I touched the lid.

“She made this for me?””

Elijah nodded.

“She wanted you to have it someday.””

Vanessa stood near the doorway.

Unable to come closer.

Unable to leave.

I opened the box.

Inside were dozens of things.

A hospital bracelet.

A tiny baby blanket.

Letters.

Photographs.

A small silver necklace.

I picked up the necklace.

I recognized it.

My mother wore one exactly like it.

“She gave this to me when I was little.””

Elijah smiled sadly.

“She bought two.””

I looked at him.

“One for you. One for her.””

My eyes filled.

A piece of my life was returning.

Not because someone gave it to me.

Because I was finally finding what had been taken away.

At the bottom of the box was a sealed envelope.

Different from the others.

No name.

No date.

Just three words.

FOR MAYA ONLY.

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Maya,

If you are reading this, then you have already learned about Elijah.

I paused.

The words felt like my mother was speaking directly to me.

I wanted you to meet him before you learned the worst parts.

My hand trembled.

Worst parts?

I kept reading.

There are things people will tell you about your father. Some will be true. Some will be lies. The only thing I want you to remember is this:

He loved you.

I looked at Elijah.

His eyes were wet.

The letter continued.

But someone wanted you to believe otherwise.

I looked toward Vanessa.

She looked away.

Then I saw something else inside the envelope.

A newspaper clipping.

The headline was faded.

LOCAL WOMAN MISSING AFTER CAR INCIDENT.

My mother’s picture was printed beside it.

I stopped breathing.

“She wasn’t sick.””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Robert.

“She wasn’t sick.””

His shoulders dropped.

“No.””

The truth finally came out.

“She was missing first.””

The room went silent.

I felt dizzy.

“Then why did you tell me she died?””

Robert looked devastated.

“Because after six months, we had no choice.””

“No choice?””

His eyes filled.

“We received a message.””

“What message?””

He looked at the door.

Like he was afraid someone might hear.

“A warning.””

My fingers tightened around the newspaper.

“What did it say?””

Robert swallowed.

Then he whispered:

“It said if we kept looking for her, you would disappear too.””

Nobody moved.

The room suddenly felt colder.

My mother wasn’t just hidden.

She had been taken.

And someone had made sure everyone stopped searching.

I looked at Elijah.

“Did you know?””

He shook his head slowly.

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I thought she left me.””

That sentence hurt.

Because for years, he had been living with the same lie I had.

I looked back at the box.

At the pictures.

At the proof of a mother who had tried to leave me answers.

Then something caught my eye.

A photograph underneath the newspaper.

I pulled it out.

It showed my mother standing beside someone.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who should not have been there.

Someone Vanessa had never mentioned.

My fingers went cold.

May you like

Because written on the back of the photograph were four words:

TRUST NO ONE HERE.
