Chapter 7: The Person My Mother Trusted
“That’s impossible.””
Robert’s voice was barely above a whisper.
But the fear behind it was louder than anything else.
I looked down at my phone.
The name on the screen sat beneath the message like a threat.
Not a stranger.
Not someone from my mother’s past.
Someone connected to the people standing in front of me.
Someone who should have been impossible.
I looked at Robert.
“What does it mean?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
His eyes stayed locked on the screen.
“Maya, you need to delete that message.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
“Maya.””
“No.””
The word came out stronger this time.
“I’m tired of everyone telling me what I should do.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Please listen to him.””
I turned toward her.
“Why?””
She stopped.
“Why should I listen to either of you?””
The question hung between us.
Because they had both spent years making decisions about my life without me.
Elijah stood quietly nearby.
Then he spoke.
“Who sent it?””
I showed him the screen.
The moment he saw the name, his expression changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know them.””
It wasn’t a question.
Elijah looked away.
“I knew of them.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
He hesitated.
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
Before he could answer, Robert interrupted.
“This conversation ends now.””
I looked at him.
“Excuse me?””
His face was tense.
“There are things you don’t understand.””
I almost laughed.
“How many times are you going to say that?””
He looked hurt.
But I didn’t stop.
“You’ve spent my entire life deciding what I could handle.””
My voice cracked.
“I’m twenty-two years old. I graduated today. I can handle the truth.””
Robert looked at the floor.
For once, he had no argument.
Elijah reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small key.
I stared at it.
“What is that?””
“Something your mother gave me.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What?””
Elijah looked at her.
“She told me to keep it until Maya was ready.””
“Ready for what?”” I asked.
He held the key in his palm.
“For the part of the story she couldn’t put in a letter.””
The hallway suddenly felt smaller.
“What does it open?””
Elijah looked at Robert.
Then Vanessa.
“A place where your mother kept proof.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Elijah’s eyes hardened.
“Yes.””
Robert stepped forward.
“You can’t do this.””
Elijah looked at him.
“You already did.””
The two men stared at each other.
And for the first time, I saw the history between them.
Not friendship.
Not strangers.
Something more complicated.
Something broken.
I looked at Robert.
“What happened between you two?””
He didn’t answer.
Elijah did.
“Your father helped me find your mother.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Robert closed his eyes.
“Maya…”
“No.””
I pointed at him.
“You said you didn’t know him.””
“I lied.””
The honesty stunned me.
He continued.
“I knew Elijah before you were born.””
The world seemed to shift again.
“So you weren’t just hiding my father.””
Robert swallowed.
“I was hiding everything.””
My anger burned.
“Why?””
His eyes filled.
“Because I promised your mother.””
I froze.
“You promised her?””
He nodded.
“She made me swear I would protect you.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And she asked you too?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
More than I expected.
Because Vanessa wasn’t denying anything anymore.
She had been carrying the secret too.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time from the same unknown number.
I opened it.
“You are closer than you think. Ask Robert what happened the night your mother disappeared.””
I looked up.
Robert’s face went pale.
Elijah noticed.
“What night?””
Robert didn’t respond.
“What night?”” Elijah repeated.
The silence was enough.
I stepped back.
“You knew.””
Robert looked at me.
“Maya…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You knew something happened to her.””
He looked broken.
“I knew she was in danger.””
My heart stopped.
“And you still let me believe she died from an illness?””
Robert looked away.
A tear slipped down his face.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I stared at the man who raised me.
Then at the man who shared my blood.
Two fathers.
Two versions of my life.
Both built on secrets.
I looked at the key in Elijah’s hand.
“Take me there.””
Vanessa immediately said, “No.””
I turned.
“No?””
She shook her head.
“You don’t know what you’ll find.””
I walked closer.
“Good.””
My fingers closed around the key.
“Because I’m done being afraid of what everyone else knows.””
Elijah looked at me.
Then he nodded.
But before we could move, Robert’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And his entire expression changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
May you like
Because whoever was calling had a name that made Elijah step back.
A name connected to the night my mother vanished.
