Chapter 11: The Man Who Knew Too Much
Nobody moved after Robert said it.
My uncle.
A word that should have felt familiar.
Safe.
Instead, it felt dangerous.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Your brother.””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“His name?””
She swallowed.
“Marcus.””
Elijah looked at her.
“You never told me.””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of him?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I closed the laptop.
The video had given us more questions than answers.
But one thing was clear.
My mother had been trying to expose someone.
Someone close.
Someone with access to our family.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Where is Marcus now?””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
Her eyes filled again.
“I haven’t seen him in ten years.””
Robert looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa looked angry suddenly.
“Because you were already broken.””
The words surprised everyone.
“You think I wasn’t?””
Robert stepped forward.
“You let me raise Maya believing her father abandoned her.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“Everyone says that.””
I interrupted.
Everyone looked at me.
“I don’t care about intentions anymore.””
My voice shook.
“I care about what happened.””
Elijah nodded.
“She’s right.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
Elijah’s expression hardened.
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“I know exactly what you sacrificed.””
Silence.
“You sacrificed the truth.””
Vanessa looked away.
That hurt because she couldn’t deny it.
I picked up the flash drive.
“We need the password.””
Robert looked at me.
“You can’t open that.””
“Why?””
“Because maybe some things are better left alone.””
I stared at him.
“Are you serious?””
He looked ashamed.
“I’m trying to keep you safe.””
I laughed.
A painful sound.
“You don’t even hear yourself anymore.””
The room became quiet.
Then Elijah spoke.
“Your mother chose this.””
He pointed at the drive.
“She wanted Maya to know.””
I nodded.
“Exactly.””
I sat back down at the laptop.
The password screen waited.
A thought crossed my mind.
My mother knew me.
She knew I would find this.
She knew I would need a way in.
I typed the first thing that came to me.
My birthday.
Wrong.
My childhood nickname.
Wrong.
The name of my favorite childhood book.
Wrong.
Nothing worked.
I looked at the screen.
Then at the necklace my mother had given me.
A silver necklace.
Two matching pieces.
One for her.
One for me.
I remembered something.
A phrase she used to say.
I typed it.
The screen unlocked.
Everyone froze.
The folder opened.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Audio files.
And one video.
Created two weeks before my mother disappeared.
I clicked it.
My mother appeared again.
But this time she wasn’t alone.
A man sat across from her.
I couldn’t see his face.
Only his hands.
But my mother’s expression was different.
She wasn’t scared.
She was angry.
“You promised me you would leave them alone.””
The man answered.
“You should have stopped digging.””
My blood ran cold.
My mother leaned forward.
“You threatened my daughter.””
The man laughed softly.
“I warned you.””
The video shook.
My mother looked toward the camera.
Like she knew someone might find it someday.
“If anything happens to me, Maya needs to know.””
The man stood.
That was when I saw his watch.
A small symbol engraved on it.
Robert gasped.
“I know that.””
Everyone turned toward him.
“What?””
Robert looked terrified.
“That watch.””
He pointed at the screen.
“I’ve seen it before.””
“Where?””
His face went pale.
“At the hospital.””
I stared.
“What hospital?””
He looked at me.
“The night your mother disappeared.””
The room went silent.
I leaned closer to the screen.
The man turned slightly.
Just enough.
Not enough to see his full face.
But enough to recognize something.
A scar.
A familiar voice.
And then the video ended.
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
From Marcus.
The uncle I had never met.
“I know you found the video.””
My hands went cold.
May you like
Another message followed.
“Now you need to know what your father did that night.””
