Chapter 9: The Photograph That Changed Everything

Nobody spoke after I turned the photograph over.

The warning sat there in my mother’s handwriting.

TRUST NO ONE HERE.

Four words.

Four words that changed the way I saw everyone in the room.

My father.

My stepmother.

My biological father.

Someone had betrayed my mother.

But who?

I looked at the picture again.

My mother was smiling.

She looked younger.

Happier.

Standing beside her was a person I knew.

Someone who had been part of my childhood.

Someone I had never questioned.

My hands started shaking.

“No.””

Elijah noticed.

“What is it?””

I handed him the photograph.

He studied it.

Then his face changed.

“You know them?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Robert stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

I looked at him.

And suddenly I wondered if he already knew.

“It’s Vanessa’s brother.””

The room went completely still.

Vanessa’s face turned white.

“My brother?””

I looked at her.

“You didn’t know?””

She didn’t answer.

That scared me more than if she had.

Elijah stared at the photograph.

“Why would your mother be with him?””

I looked at the image.

The answer wasn’t there.

Only more questions.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Let me see that.””

I pulled it back.

“No.””

“Maya.””

“No.””

My voice was firm.

“You don’t get to take things from me anymore.””

The words hit her.

She stopped.

For a moment, she looked less like the woman who controlled every room.

She looked like someone who was finally losing control of a story she had protected for years.

Robert sat down.

“I didn’t know about this.””

I looked at him.

“How much didn’t you know?””

He looked away.

The question hurt because he didn’t have an answer.

Elijah looked at Vanessa.

“Where is your brother now?””

Vanessa’s lips parted.

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

Her voice cracked.

“I haven’t spoken to him in years.””

I studied her.

For the first time, I believed she might actually be telling the truth.

But that didn’t erase what she had done.

I picked up the box again.

There had to be more.

My mother never left just one clue.

She knew someone would find everything eventually.

Inside the bottom of the box was a hidden compartment.

I almost missed it.

But the wood underneath the papers felt different.

I pressed down.

A small section lifted.

Inside was a flash drive.

Robert stared.

“What is that?””

I picked it up.

“My mother left this.””

Elijah looked worried.

“Do you have a computer?””

Before anyone answered, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I looked at the screen.

The same number that had sent the messages.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

For three seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a voice.

An older woman.

“Maya?””

My blood ran cold.

“How do you know my name?””

The woman sighed.

“Because I knew your mother.””

I stood still.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Denise Brooks.””

Elijah’s face changed.

“No.””

The voice continued.

“I’m Elijah’s mother.””

I looked at him.

He looked completely shocked.

“She’s dead,” he whispered.

The woman on the phone heard him.

“No, Elijah.””

Her voice broke.

“I’m not.””

Nobody moved.

I pressed the phone tighter against my ear.

“Where are you?””

“Maya, listen carefully.””

Her voice became urgent.

“You cannot trust everyone standing in that room.””

My eyes moved slowly across the people around me.

Robert.

Vanessa.

Elijah.

The woman continued.

“Your mother left that flash drive because she knew the truth would eventually come out.””

I looked at the drive in my hand.

“What truth?””

The woman hesitated.

Then whispered:

“The truth about who really wanted Elijah gone.””

Elijah stepped closer.

“Mom, what are you talking about?””

A long silence.

Then Denise answered:

“I’m talking about the person who raised Maya.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Robert.

He looked horrified.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Elijah stared between us.

The call suddenly cut.

I looked at my phone.

The screen went black.

And in the reflection, I saw everyone’s faces.

Everyone except Vanessa.

May you like

Because she had turned away.

And she was crying.
