Chapter 5: My Mother’s Last Warning

I couldn’t move.

The paper trembled between my fingers.

My mother’s handwriting stared back at me from the page, each word carrying a piece of a life I had never been allowed to know.

“Maya,” Robert whispered.

I looked up.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“I’m sorry.””

I laughed quietly.

It wasn’t happiness.

It was disbelief.

“You’ve said that twice today.””

He looked down.

“Because I don’t know what else to say.””

“That’s the problem.””

I folded the letter carefully.

“You never knew what to say when I asked about him.””

Robert flinched.

“You just stayed quiet.””

Elijah stood a few feet away, watching me.

Not pushing.

Not interrupting.

Just waiting.

I respected him for that.

Vanessa didn’t.

“You shouldn’t read that letter here.””

I turned toward her.

“Why?””

She looked nervous.

“Because you don’t know what’s inside.””

“That’s exactly why I’m reading it.””

She reached toward me.

I stepped back.

The movement shocked her.

Maybe because I had never done that before.

Maybe because she was used to me trusting her.

“You raised me,” I said softly.

Her eyes filled.

“I did.””

“Then why did you hide him?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice cracked.

“But nobody tells me what you were protecting me from.””

Nobody answered.

I unfolded the letter again.

The paper shook as I read.

Maya,

If you know about Elijah, then you have finally found the truth I was too afraid to tell you.

I looked at Elijah.

His eyes were locked on the letter.

He had never seen it.

That surprised me.

“You never read this?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Why?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because your mother never gave it to me.””

I continued.

I wanted you to grow up knowing love, not anger. I wanted you to have a normal childhood. But there are people who believe they have the right to control your story.

My stomach tightened.

People.

Again.

Not one person.

More than one.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked pale.

The auditorium noise faded behind us.

Graduates were still walking across the stage.

Families were still cheering.

But my family was trapped in a truth that had been buried for decades.

The letter continued.

Elijah loved you before he ever held you. He chose you before he ever saw your face.

My eyes burned.

I covered my mouth.

A sound escaped before I could stop it.

Elijah looked away.

Like he was giving me privacy.

That hurt even more.

Because he was acting like a father.

And I barely knew him.

Robert spoke quietly.

“Maya…”

I looked at him.

“Did you know she wrote this?””

“No.””

“Did you know she wanted him to find me?””

He didn’t answer.

Again.

That silence.

I folded the letter.

“You don’t get to hide behind silence anymore.””

Robert looked devastated.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

He looked at Vanessa.

That answer was enough.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“You blame me?””

Robert shook his head.

“I blame all of us.””

Elijah stepped closer.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pulled another document from the envelope.

My mother’s handwriting was on it too.

But this time, the paper looked newer.

“She wrote this after she realized someone had been watching her.””

My heart raced.

“Watching her?””

Elijah nodded.

“She was afraid.””

“Of who?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then Robert.

Then me.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at him.

“You’re my father. You should know.””

His eyes dropped.

“You’re right.””

That honesty surprised me.

“I should have known.””

The hallway lights flickered slightly.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

Another unknown message.

I opened it.

A single sentence appeared.

STOP ASKING QUESTIONS IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY YOUR MOTHER DIED.

My hands went cold.

I showed them the screen.

Elijah’s face changed immediately.

Robert stood.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Nobody spoke.

Because the message didn’t just mention my mother.

It mentioned something I had never heard anyone say before.

Died.

I looked at all three of them.

“My mother didn’t get sick?””

No one answered.

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

“Tell me the truth.””

Elijah looked at me with tears in his eyes.

May you like

And then he said the words that changed everything.

“Your mother’s death was never an accident.””
