Chapter 12: The Hospital Door

The message stayed on my screen.

Now you need to know what your father did that night.

I looked at Robert.

He didn’t need to ask what I saw.

His face already told me.

He knew.

“What happened?””

He sat down slowly.

“I made a mistake.””

The words barely came out.

I stared at him.

“What kind of mistake?””

Robert looked at Elijah.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“The kind that changed everything.””

I felt anger rising.

“Everyone keeps saying things like that.””

I stepped closer.

“Changed everything. Protected you. Had no choice.””

My voice broke.

“But nobody says what actually happened.””

Robert covered his face.

“I was at the hospital.””

My heart stopped.

“The night my mother disappeared.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because she called me.””

The room went silent.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

His eyes filled.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Robert looked at the laptop.

“At the time, I thought I was protecting you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“You were protecting yourself.””

He didn’t argue.

Because maybe he knew I was right.

Elijah stepped forward.

“What did she say?””

Robert looked at him.

“She said someone was following her.””

Elijah’s face changed.

“She called you?””

Robert nodded.

“She said she needed help.””

I stared.

“Did you go?””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer hit me.

“Then what happened?””

Robert closed his eyes.

“I saw Marcus.””

Vanessa gasped.

“What?””

Robert looked at her.

“He was there.””

The room froze.

“You never told me that,” Vanessa whispered.

Robert’s face hardened.

“Because I didn’t know who to trust.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What happened after?””

Robert’s voice became quieter.

“Your mother was alive.””

Nobody breathed.

“She was scared.””

My hands shook.

“She was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Then where did she go?””

Robert looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at him.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I got there too late.””

The anger inside me mixed with something worse.

Pain.

“You saw her.””

“Yes.””

“And you let everyone believe she died?””

Robert started crying.

“I thought she was gone.””

Elijah looked furious.

“You thought?””

Robert looked at him.

“I searched.””

“For how long?””

“Years.””

“Not enough.””

The words cut deep.

But Robert accepted them.

Because maybe he knew they were true.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

Marcus.

“I can show you the rest.””

A second message.

“But only if you come alone.””

I showed everyone.

Immediately, Robert shook his head.

“No.””

Elijah said the same thing.

“Absolutely not.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Maya, don’t.””

I stared at them.

Three people telling me not to do something.

Three people who had hidden the truth.

I looked back at the message.

Then at the locked video files.

Marcus knew something.

Something my mother died trying to reveal.

“I’m going.””

Robert stood.

“No.””

I turned toward him.

“You don’t get to stop me.””

“Maya.””

“No.””

My voice was firm.

“For twenty-two years, everyone protected me from the truth.””

I grabbed my bag.

“But nobody protected me from the lies.””

Elijah stepped forward.

“Then I’m coming with you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

His face hurt.

“I’m your father.””

“I know.””

The words softened him.

“But I need to do this.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Maya…”

I looked at her.

“You have one chance.””

She looked confused.

“To tell me something before I leave.””

Her eyes filled.

“What?””

“The truth.””

She stood there.

Silent.

For a moment, I thought she would finally say everything.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

And her face changed completely.

Not fear.

Shock.

She answered.

“Hello?””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

Her lips trembled.

“Maya…”

“What?””

She looked at me.

And whispered:

“Marcus isn’t the one who sent the messages.””

The room froze.

“Then who did?””

Vanessa looked toward the door.

At the person standing there.

The person none of us noticed enter.

The person holding another old photograph.

May you like

And the person who said:

“Because I did.””
