Chapter 6: The Secret They Shared

I heard the words.

But I didn’t understand them.

Not immediately.

My mind rejected them.

Because some truths are too painful to enter all at once.

“My mother’s death was never an accident.””

Elijah’s voice echoed in my head.

I stared at him.

“No.””

Nobody moved.

“No,” I repeated.

“My mother got sick.””

Robert looked away.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

And that was when I knew.

They weren’t shocked.

They were remembering.

“You knew.””

My voice became quieter.

“You all knew.””

Vanessa whispered, “Maya…”

I turned toward her.

“Don’t.””

The single word stopped her.

I had spent my entire life trying to understand why my mother was gone.

Why I had so few memories.

Why everyone avoided certain questions.

And now I was standing in a graduation hallway finding out the answer had been hidden from me.

Elijah took a breath.

“Your mother wanted to tell you herself.””

“When?””

“After graduation.””

I froze.

“She knew I would graduate?””

He nodded.

“She kept track of you.””

My eyes filled.

“She watched me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she come?””

Elijah looked down.

Because he had no answer that wouldn’t hurt.

“I don’t know.””

The honesty broke me more than a lie would have.

I sat down on a nearby chair.

My graduation gown fell around me.

A symbol of achievement.

A symbol of everything I had worked for.

But all I could think about was a mother who had secrets she never got to reveal.

Vanessa approached slowly.

“Maya.””

I looked up.

For the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.

Not anger.

Not control.

Fear.

“I loved your mother.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Then why did you help erase her?””

Her face collapsed.

“I didn’t.””

Elijah looked at her.

“You did.””

“No.””

“You knew where I was.””

“I knew enough to keep her safe.””

“Safe?””

His voice sharpened.

“She lost years with her daughter.””

Vanessa looked like she wanted to argue.

But she couldn’t.

Robert finally spoke.

“There was a reason.””

I turned toward him.

“There’s always a reason.””

His face tightened.

“You don’t understand what was happening.””

“Then explain.””

He looked around.

At the empty hallway.

At the people passing in the distance.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Not here.””

I stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I’m done leaving places without answers.””

My voice shook.

“But I’m not done.””

Elijah nodded slowly.

Like he understood.

“You deserve the whole truth.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Do you really think telling her everything will fix this?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“But she deserves to choose what happens next.””

That was the first time I saw Vanessa lose control.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to save her.””

I looked at her.

“Save me from my own father?””

She didn’t answer.

The silence was painful.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, it was a video file.

From the same unknown number.

I stared at it.

“Who keeps sending these?””

Nobody knew.

I pressed play.

The screen showed a recording.

An old recording.

My mother appeared.

Older than the photos.

Tired.

But alive.

My knees almost gave out.

“Hello, Maya.””

Her voice.

My mother’s voice.

I covered my mouth.

Everyone froze.

The video continued.

“If you’re watching this, then something happened and I couldn’t tell you myself.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying now.

My mother continued.

“Before you trust anyone, remember one thing…”

The video paused.

Buffering.

A terrible second passed.

Then the next words appeared.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“Your father is not the person they warned you about.””

The video cut.

Everyone stared at the screen.

Then my phone buzzed one final time.

A new message appeared.

A name.

A name none of them expected.

May you like

And when Robert read it, he whispered:

“That’s impossible.””
