Chapter 1: The Night Marcus Saw the Truth

“Vanessa, what did you just say to my daughter?””

Marcus had replayed the sentence seven times, but the words still sounded impossible.

The mansion’s security room hummed quietly around him, filled with the soft glow of dozens of monitors. Blue and white camera feeds covered the walls, showing every corner of the place he had worked so hard to build. The marble hallway.

The grand staircase. The kitchen where Maya liked to sneak cookies. The living room where they watched movies every Friday night.

And now, the hallway camera showed something he had never imagined.

His eight-year-old daughter was on her knees.

Maya’s small hands gripped a scrub brush as she pushed it across the spotless white marble floor. Her school shirt was wrinkled, her dark pinafore was stained with dust, and her braided pigtails had fallen loose around her face. Tears rolled down her cheeks. A small red mark beneath her nose made Marcus’s chest tighten.

Behind her, sitting comfortably in an elegant cream satin robe, Vanessa calmly lifted a teacup to her lips.

The woman Marcus married.

The woman he trusted.

The woman who promised she would love Maya like her own.

The camera audio crackled.

“Vanessa: Keep scrubbing.””

Maya’s shoulders shook.

“Please…” she whispered.

“I want my dad.””

Vanessa slowly lowered her cup.

“He doesn’t need to know.””

Marcus felt his hand tighten around the edge of the desk.

“What the hell…?”” he whispered.

He had arrived home twenty minutes earlier than expected. His business meeting ended early, and he had been looking forward to surprising Maya before dinner.

Instead, he walked into the security room because he noticed something strange.

The hallway camera feed had been paused.

Someone had manually accessed the system.

At first, Marcus thought it was a technical problem.

Then he saw his daughter.

He grabbed the mouse and rewound the footage.

The image jumped backward.

Maya appeared entering the hallway with her backpack.

Vanessa stood in front of her.

The audio became clearer.

“Vanessa: You know what happens when someone in this house disobeys me.””

Maya looked up.

“I didn’t break anything.””

“Vanessa: You embarrassed me.””

“I didn’t mean to.””

“Vanessa: You asked questions you shouldn’t ask.””

Marcus froze.

Questions?

What questions?

He leaned closer to the monitor.

Maya wiped her face with her sleeve.

“My dad said I can always ask him anything.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Something colder.

“Vanessa: Your father doesn’t understand everything.””

Maya shook her head.

“He would.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Vanessa: No. He wouldn’t.””

Marcus felt a strange pressure building in his chest.

For months, Vanessa had acted like the perfect stepmother. She packed Maya’s lunches. Helped her with homework. Bought her dresses for school events.

Everyone praised her.

Marcus’s friends told him he was lucky.

“She’s a good woman,” they said.

“She really stepped up.””

But now he watched his daughter silently scrubbing a floor while Vanessa sat behind her like she was watching a punishment.

The camera footage continued.

Maya looked toward the hallway entrance.

“Please don’t tell my dad I asked.””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“Vanessa: That depends on you.””

Marcus stopped the video.

His breathing became heavy.

“No.””

He pressed play again.

The scene continued.

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Vanessa: If you tell him, you’ll never see her again.””

Marcus’s eyes widened.

The room suddenly felt too small.

He turned up the audio.

The speakers filled with Vanessa’s voice.

“Vanessa: If you tell him, you’ll never see her again.””

Marcus stood completely still.

The sentence echoed.

Never see her again.

He rewound two seconds.

Played it.

Again.

Again.

There was no mistake.

Then Maya’s voice came through the speakers.

Small.

Broken.

“My real mom?””

Marcus’s fingers froze over the keyboard.

Vanessa answered.

“Yes. She’s still alive.””

The world seemed to stop.

Marcus stared at the monitor.

Maya’s tearful face remained on the screen.

Vanessa sat behind her, holding her teacup.

Marcus whispered one word.

May you like

“Vanessa…”

And for the first time in years, he felt afraid of the woman sleeping beside him every night.
