Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the File

Marcus stood motionless in the security room, staring at Vanessa as if he was seeing her for the first time.

The woman in front of him was the same person who kissed him goodbye every morning.

The same woman who sat beside him at charity dinners.

The same woman who held Maya’s hand during school performances.

But now every memory carried a shadow.

“Marcus: What does that mean?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She looked at the monitors instead.

Maya was sitting alone at the kitchen table, quietly eating breakfast.

A child.

His child.

Caught between secrets she never created.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Marcus: You told me she was gone.””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I told you what you were able to survive hearing.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Marcus: Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Marcus: Don’t make yourself the hero.””

The words landed hard.

For the first time, Vanessa looked hurt.

But Marcus didn’t stop.

“Marcus: You watched my daughter cry on the floor. You threatened her. You hid her mother from her. And now you’re telling me you were protecting us?””

Vanessa looked down at the teacup in her hand.

The same cup she held in the footage.

The same calm expression.

Except now Marcus could see the cracks.

“Vanessa: I never wanted Maya to grow up without answers.””

“Marcus: Then why did you make sure she did?””

Silence filled the room.

The security monitors hummed.

A clock on the wall ticked louder than it should have.

Finally, Vanessa walked toward the desk.

“Vanessa: Open the file again.””

Marcus hesitated.

“Marcus: Why?””

“Vanessa: Because you deserve to see the truth from the beginning.””

He didn’t trust her.

Not anymore.

But curiosity was stronger than anger.

Marcus reopened the folder.

The photograph appeared again.

A young woman holding baby Maya.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Marcus: Who is she?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Vanessa: Her name is Alana.””

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

The name meant something.

Not because he knew her.

Because he remembered hearing it.

Years ago.

Before Maya.

Before Vanessa.

Before everything changed.

“Marcus: Alana…”

Vanessa nodded.

“She was my best friend.””

Marcus stared.

The room suddenly felt colder.

“Marcus: Your best friend?””

“Yes.””

“And Maya?””

Vanessa looked at the picture.

“Maya was never supposed to become my secret.””

Marcus moved closer.

“Marcus: Explain.””

Vanessa sat down.

For the first time since entering the room, she looked exhausted.

“Vanessa: Alana was the kind of person everyone loved. She walked into a room and people noticed. She had a way of making everyone feel important.””

Marcus watched the screen.

The baby in the photograph smiled.

“She loved Maya more than anything.””

“Marcus: Then why isn’t she here?””

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she opened another file.

A document appeared.

Marcus leaned closer.

It was a hospital record.

The date was eight years ago.

The week Maya was born.

His heart started racing.

“Marcus: Why do you have this?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because I was there.””

A painful silence followed.

Marcus whispered:

“You were there when Maya was born?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I was there before you knew you were a father.””

Marcus stepped back.

“What?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Alana called me that night.””

“Why?””

“Because she was scared.””

Marcus felt anger rising.

“Marcus: Scared of what?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

Instead, she opened another file.

A security image appeared.

A hospital hallway.

A woman walking quickly while carrying a newborn baby.

Marcus stared.

The image quality was old.

But the woman was clear.

Alana.

And beside her…

Someone else.

Marcus leaned toward the screen.

“Who is that?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Marcus zoomed in.

The second person’s face became clearer.

His breathing stopped.

Because he recognized the person standing beside Alana.

Someone he had trusted.

Someone who had been at his house.

Someone who knew Maya.

The security room door suddenly made a sound.

A small click.

Marcus turned.

Maya stood there.

Her eyes moved between him and Vanessa.

“Daddy?””

Marcus immediately softened.

“Maya…”

She stepped inside slowly.

“I heard you talking.””

Vanessa stood.

“Maya, you shouldn’t be here.””

Maya ignored her.

She looked at Marcus.

“Is Mommy really alive?””

The question broke him.

Because he didn’t have an answer.

He wanted to say yes.

He wanted to say everything was okay.

But after all the lies, he couldn’t make another promise.

Marcus walked toward her.

“Marcus: I don’t know everything yet.””

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t know?””

He knelt.

“I’m going to find out.””

Maya looked over his shoulder at Vanessa.

“Did she hate me?””

Vanessa froze.

Marcus looked at her.

“Maya, why would you ask that?””

The little girl swallowed.

“Because she acts like she’s angry every time I talk about my mom.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Something passed through her face.

Pain.

Then guilt.

“Vanessa: Maya…”

But Maya stepped back.

“I just want the truth.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

For years, he thought he was the one protecting Maya.

Now he realized everyone had been protecting something else.

A secret.

A person.

A past.

Then the computer on the desk suddenly beeped.

A new file notification appeared.

Marcus turned.

The screen displayed one sentence.

*NEW MESSAGE FROM ALANA.*

His blood froze.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Marcus clicked the message.

Only one line appeared.

*Marcus, if you’re seeing this, Vanessa finally failed to keep me hidden.*

Marcus stared.

May you like

Then another sentence loaded.

*But before you find me, you need to know what happened the night I disappeared.*
