Chapter 2: The Question Maya Never Asked

Marcus did not leave the security room.

Not because he didn’t want to.

Because he couldn’t.

His mind was trying to catch up with what his eyes had already seen.

Maya’s real mom.

Alive.

The words kept repeating.

For eight years, Marcus believed he knew the truth.

He believed Maya’s mother was gone.

He believed he was the only parent she had left.

He believed Vanessa came into their lives when they both needed someone.

But now every memory felt different.

Every conversation.

Every silence.

Every time Maya asked about her mother.

Marcus leaned against the desk and stared at the paused screen.

Maya’s face was frozen mid-tear.

He remembered the first time she asked.

She was five years old, sitting on the kitchen counter with a bowl of strawberries in her lap.

“Daddy?””

Marcus had looked up from making dinner.

“Yeah, princess?””

“Did my mommy like strawberries?””

He had smiled sadly.

“I think she would have loved them.””

Maya looked down.

“Do you miss her?””

Marcus remembered how carefully he answered.

“Every day.””

He never told Maya more than that.

He thought protecting her from pain was the right thing to do.

Now he wondered if he had been protecting a lie.

A sound suddenly came from the hallway camera.

The video was still recording.

Vanessa moved.

Marcus quickly lowered the volume and watched.

Maya slowly stood up, holding the scrub brush.

Her knees were shaking.

“Vanessa: Where are you going?””

Maya looked at her.

“I’m tired.””

Vanessa placed her teacup down.

“You’re not finished.””

Maya swallowed.

“Why did you lie to Daddy?””

Marcus leaned forward.

His heart raced.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Vanessa: What did you say?””

Maya’s voice became quieter.

“I found the picture.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

Picture?

Vanessa stood.

“What picture?””

“The one in your closet.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked nervous.

Only for a second.

But Marcus noticed.

He had spent years reading people in business meetings. He knew when someone was hiding something.

Vanessa walked closer to Maya.

“Vanessa: You went through my things?””

Maya looked down.

“I just wanted to know who she was.””

“Who who was?””

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“My mommy.””

Marcus covered his mouth.

He felt a sharp pain in his chest.

His daughter had been searching for answers alone.

Inside her own home.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Vanessa: You don’t understand what you’re asking.””

Maya looked up.

“Then explain it.””

The simple courage in her voice broke something inside Marcus.

She was only eight years old.

She should have been worried about homework.

Friends.

Cartoons.

Not secrets hidden by adults.

Vanessa turned away.

“You need to forget what you saw.””

Maya shook her head.

“I can’t.””

“Vanessa: You have to.””

“No.””

The answer surprised Vanessa.

Maya wiped her cheeks.

“I want my dad to tell me the truth.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

He had always promised her that.

The truth.

No matter how hard.

No matter how painful.

The camera showed Vanessa walking closer.

“Vanessa: Your father loves you.””

Maya nodded.

“I know.””

“Vanessa: Then you don’t want to ruin his life.””

Marcus opened his eyes.

Ruin his life?

What did that mean?

Vanessa continued.

“You think knowing everything makes things better. It doesn’t.””

Maya whispered.

“Why?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked directly toward the camera.

Marcus froze.

It was impossible.

She couldn’t know.

Could she?

The hallway camera zoomed slightly.

Vanessa’s face filled the screen.

Her eyes seemed to look straight at him.

Then she walked away.

The recording continued.

Maya stood alone in the hallway.

Marcus reached for the keyboard.

He wanted to call out.

He wanted to run upstairs.

He wanted to hold his daughter and promise everything would be okay.

But something stopped him.

A feeling.

A warning.

There was more.

Something Vanessa was afraid of.

Marcus opened the security system files.

He searched the camera history.

A list appeared.

Thousands of recordings.

Dates.

Times.

Access logs.

Then he noticed something strange.

Someone had deleted footage from eight years ago.

The exact week Maya’s mother supposedly disappeared.

Marcus clicked the file.

A message appeared.

ACCESS RESTRICTED.

He stared at the screen.

His own security system was blocking him.

The owner.

The man who installed every camera in the mansion.

Someone had created a password.

Someone inside his house.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Marcus looked down.

There was only one sentence.

*You finally watched the cameras.*

His blood ran cold.

May you like

A second message arrived.

*Now you need to know why Vanessa was protecting the truth.*
