Chapter 8: The Truth Inside the Walls
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
That frightened Marcus more than anything.
Because everyone who knew the truth seemed afraid of saying it.
The mansion fell silent.
Maya stood behind Marcus, gripping the back of his jacket.
Vanessa looked exhausted.
Daniel looked like someone who had carried a secret for too long.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“Daniel: When Maya was born, Alana discovered something about your family.””
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
“My family?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your father.””
The words hit unexpectedly.
Marcus froze.
“My father died years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you bringing him up?””
Daniel looked toward the security room.
“Because before he died, he left something behind.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“No.””
Marcus turned.
“You know about this too?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
His voice cracked with anger.
“No more.””
Maya watched silently.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Every person in this house has known something about my life that I didn’t.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s why I came.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then talk.””
Daniel reached into his coat.
Vanessa immediately reacted.
“Don’t.””
Daniel pulled out a small envelope.
Not a weapon.
A letter.
Marcus stared.
“What is that?””
“Something Alana kept.””
Daniel held it out.
Marcus didn’t take it.
“Why didn’t she give it to me herself?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Because she couldn’t.””
The answer was simple.
But painful.
Marcus slowly accepted the envelope.
His name was written on the front.
His handwriting.
No.
Not his.
Someone else’s.
The paper was old.
The edges were worn.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was one page.
Only a few sentences.
Marcus,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth.
But I need you to understand one thing.
Maya was never the secret.
The secret was who wanted her hidden.
Marcus read the words twice.
His hands shook.
Daniel watched him.
He did.
There was one final sentence.
The person who destroyed our family is someone you trusted more than anyone.
Marcus stopped.
Slowly, he looked up.
His eyes moved toward Vanessa.
She immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus stared.
“Is it you?””
The question broke something in her.
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“Marcus, I know how this looks.””
“It looks like you knew everything.””
“I did.””
“That’s the problem.””
Vanessa looked at Maya.
“I never wanted her hurt.””
Maya looked away.
Marcus noticed.
The little girl wasn’t angry.
She was disappointed.
That hurt worse.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Marcus: Vanessa didn’t destroy your family.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then who did?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he walked toward the security room.
Marcus followed.
On the main screen, Daniel opened a file.
Another hidden folder.
Another secret.
Inside was a name.
Marcus stared.
The name belonged to someone he knew.
Someone who had attended his wedding.
Someone who had held Maya as a baby.
Someone he had thanked for helping him survive after Alana disappeared.
His face went pale.
“No.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus backed away.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa whispered:
“It isn’t.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“I found out years later.””
“And you still stayed?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I stayed because Maya needed someone.””
Marcus looked at Maya.
The little girl stood quietly.
Listening.
Learning.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“You need to understand what happened that night.””
Marcus swallowed.
“The night Alana disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“Tell me.””
Daniel looked toward the window.
The sunlight had shifted.
The bright mansion suddenly felt cold.
“Alana didn’t run away.””
Marcus waited.
“She was taken.””
Maya gasped softly.
Marcus turned immediately.
“Maya…”
But Daniel continued.
“And the person who took her wanted one thing.””
“What?””
Daniel looked directly at Marcus.
“To make sure you never searched for her.””
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Not Marcus’s.
Not Vanessa’s.
Maya’s.
The child looked down.
Confused.
“I don’t have a phone.””
The sound came from her backpack.
Marcus walked toward it slowly.
He opened the zipper.
Inside was a small phone.
Hidden beneath her school books.
Maya looked terrified.
“I’ve never seen that before.””
Marcus picked it up.
The screen was lit.
One new message.
He read it.
And his blood turned cold.
*Ask your daughter what she remembers from the night her mother disappeared.*
Marcus looked at Maya.
“Maya…”
Her face changed.
Like she suddenly remembered something.
Something buried.
Something she had never told anyone.
“Daddy?””
His voice softened.
“What is it?””
Maya’s eyes filled with fear.
“I think…”
She looked at Vanessa.
Then Daniel.
May you like
Then Marcus.
“I think I saw who took Mommy.””
