Chapter 10: The Brother Behind the Lie
Marcus couldn’t move.
The man standing outside his mansion was someone who belonged in the past.
Someone buried beneath years of grief.
Someone Marcus had mourned.
His brother.
Adrian.
Alive.
The security monitor showed his face clearly now.
Older.
Harder.
But unmistakably him.
Maya looked between Marcus and the screen.
“Daddy… who is that?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
His mind was trapped somewhere else.
A childhood bedroom.
Two brothers racing through the backyard.
Their father teaching them how to fix a car engine.
Adrian laughing after stealing Marcus’s favorite jacket.
Then later…
The silence.
The anger.
The distance.
The night Marcus received the call that Adrian had died.
He remembered standing in a hospital hallway, unable to believe it.
He remembered the funeral.
The empty seat at family gatherings.
The years of wondering if he should have tried harder to save their relationship.
Now the person he buried was standing outside his door.
Daniel watched him carefully.
“Daniel: Marcus.””
Marcus looked at him.
“How?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Vanessa did.
“He never died.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“You knew?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I knew he was alive.””
The pain on Marcus’s face changed into anger.
“You knew my brother was alive and you said nothing?””
“I tried to tell you.””
“When?””
“Several times.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“No. You gave me warnings. Half-truths.
Locked files. Secrets.””
Vanessa looked toward Maya.
“I was afraid.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You were always afraid.””
Before Vanessa could answer, the intercom clicked.
Adrian’s voice filled the hallway.
“Adrian: Are you finished blaming everyone else?””
Marcus stared at the speaker.
“Open the door.””
“No.””
A quiet laugh came through.
“Adrian: Still stubborn.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You died.””
A pause.
Then:
“Adrian: No. I disappeared.””
The words echoed.
Marcus felt anger rising.
“Why?””
“Because I found out what our father was hiding.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Daniel: This is the truth you’ve been chasing.””
Marcus ignored him.
“What did our father have to do with Alana?””
The answer didn’t come immediately.
When Adrian spoke again, his voice was different.
Less confident.
More broken.
“Adrian: Everything.””
Marcus stared at the monitor.
“No.””
“Marcus, listen to me.””
“You don’t get to tell me to listen.””
Adrian looked down.
For a moment, he looked like the little brother Marcus remembered.
Then it disappeared.
“Adrian: Our father built his entire life on secrets. Money. Deals. People he controlled.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“He was a businessman.””
“He was dangerous.””
Vanessa quietly said:
“Adrian found documents.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What documents?””
“Documents about Maya.””
The room went silent.
Maya held Marcus’s hand tighter.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Marcus: Your father discovered something before Maya was born.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at Adrian on the screen.
“Your father knew Maya existed before you did.””
Marcus froze.
“That’s impossible.””
Adrian’s voice came through.
“Not impossible.””
Marcus stared.
“Explain.””
“Alana wasn’t hiding Maya from you.””
A pause.
“She was hiding Maya from him.””
Marcus felt the floor shift beneath him.
“My father wanted my daughter?””
Adrian didn’t answer directly.
“He wanted control.””
The word made Vanessa close her eyes.
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“Tell me everything.””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then:
“Your father believed Maya carried something important.””
Marcus looked confused.
“She was a baby.””
“I know.””
“Then what?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Your father believed Alana had evidence against him.””
Daniel continued.
“Evidence that could destroy everything he built.””
Marcus looked at the monitor.
“And Maya?””
Adrian answered.
“Maya was the only person who knew where Alana hid it.””
Marcus looked at Maya.
The little girl shook her head.
“I don’t know anything.””
Marcus immediately knelt.
“I know.””
Adrian spoke softly.
“She was too young to understand.””
Marcus looked up.
“Then why did you say she remembers?””
Adrian was silent.
That silence frightened him.
“Adrian?””
Finally, his brother said:
“Because she remembers more than she thinks.””
Maya stepped back.
“No.””
Marcus turned.
“Maya?””
She looked terrified.
“I don’t want to remember.””
Marcus pulled her close.
“You don’t have to.””
But Adrian interrupted.
“Marcus, she already started.””
Marcus looked at the monitor.
“What are you talking about?””
Adrian’s voice became serious.
“The nightmares.””
Marcus froze.
Maya’s expression changed.
Because she knew.
Marcus looked at her.
“Maya?””
She whispered:
“I see the rain sometimes.””
His heart broke.
“You never told me.””
“I thought it was just a dream.””
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus noticed.
“You knew?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Maya used to wake up crying.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I thought it would hurt you.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Another secret.
Another decision made without him.
The front door suddenly unlocked.
Everyone turned.
Adrian had entered.
He stood in the hallway.
No one moved.
Marcus stared at his brother.
Alive.
Real.
Impossible.
Adrian looked at Maya.
His expression softened.
“I’m sorry.””
Marcus stepped in front of her.
“You stay away.””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“I deserve that.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why are you here?””
Adrian looked toward the security room.
“Because the truth is no longer safe.””
Daniel frowned.
“What happened?””
Adrian’s face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“The person who started this knows Marcus found the files.””
Vanessa looked alarmed.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at Marcus.
Then said:
“The person who has been sending those messages.””
Marcus felt cold.
“The unknown number.””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
The phone in Marcus’s pocket suddenly buzzed.
Everyone looked.
A new message.
Marcus slowly pulled it out.
One sentence.
*You brought Adrian home. Good. Now all three secrets are in one place.*
Marcus looked around the room.
Three secrets.
Him.
Vanessa.
Adrian.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
*But only one of you knows what happened to Alana.*
