Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew Too Much

Marcus did not open the door.

Not yet.

The entire mansion seemed frozen around him.

The marble floor reflected the morning sunlight, the expensive furniture stood perfectly arranged, and the quiet luxury of the house looked exactly the same as it always had.

But Marcus knew better now.

This house had never been peaceful.

It had only been hiding.

Maya stood beside him, holding his hand tightly.

Vanessa remained several feet away, staring at the front door like it was something dangerous.

The intercom crackled again.

“Daniel: Marcus, I know you’re there.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Marcus: How does he know?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Marcus: Vanessa.””

She closed her eyes.

“Vanessa: Because he knows this house.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Before Vanessa could respond, Daniel spoke again.

“Daniel: You should ask your wife how many times I’ve been inside.””

Maya looked up.

“Daddy?””

Marcus immediately moved in front of her.

“Marcus: Go upstairs.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

“Maya.””

“I’m tired of people telling me to leave when they talk about my life.””

The words hit him harder than any accusation.

She was right.

Every adult had been making decisions around her.

Everyone except her.

Marcus knelt.

“Marcus: I’m not leaving you out.””

Maya looked at him.

“Then don’t.””

A moment passed.

Then Marcus nodded.

“Stay with me.””

Vanessa watched them quietly.

For a second, Marcus saw something in her face.

Regret.

Not manipulation.

Not control.

Regret.

But he couldn’t forget what she had done.

He stood again.

“Marcus: Tell me everything before I open that door.””

Vanessa looked toward Daniel’s shadow on the security monitor.

“Vanessa: Daniel worked with Alana.””

Marcus frowned.

“Worked how?””

“They were friends.””

“Friends?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Before Maya was born, Alana trusted him.””

Marcus stared.

“And then?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Then she realized she shouldn’t have.””

The intercom clicked.

Daniel laughed softly.

“Daniel: Still telling half-truths, Vanessa?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

Marcus noticed.

Daniel knew exactly how to hurt her.

“Marcus: Why are you here?””

Daniel answered immediately.

“To stop you from making the same mistake Alana made.””

Marcus stepped closer to the intercom.

“And what mistake was that?””

A pause.

Then:

“Daniel: Trusting Vanessa.””

Vanessa flinched.

Marcus looked at her.

For years, he thought Vanessa was the person keeping his family together.

Now he didn’t know if she was the reason it survived.

Or the reason it broke.

Daniel continued.

“Daniel: She never told you what happened after Alana left.””

Marcus’s voice became colder.

“Where is Alana?””

Silence.

Too long.

Then Daniel said:

“That’s the question you should have asked eight years ago.””

Marcus felt anger rising.

“You don’t get to blame me.””

“No?””

Daniel’s voice remained calm.

“Daniel: You built a perfect life and never looked behind the walls.””

Marcus looked around.

The mansion.

The cameras.

The locked files.

The hidden messages.

Maybe Daniel was right about one thing.

There were walls everywhere.

“Open the door.””

Marcus stared at the entrance.

“No.””

A pause.

Then Daniel sighed.

“Daniel: I expected that.””

The security monitors suddenly changed.

Every camera feed disappeared.

A single video replaced them.

Marcus froze.

It was footage from inside the mansion.

Not today.

Years ago.

A younger Vanessa stood in the hallway.

She looked terrified.

Alana stood across from her.

Holding baby Maya.

Marcus stepped closer.

He had never seen this.

Never.

The audio turned on.

“Alana: You promised me.””

Vanessa’s younger voice shook.

“I know.””

“Alana: Then why did you do it?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

Alana held Maya closer.

“You always say that.””

The video glitched.

Marcus stared.

“Who recorded this?””

Daniel answered through the intercom.

“Someone who wanted the truth saved.””

The footage continued.

Alana looked directly at Vanessa.

“If anything happens to me, Marcus needs to know.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Alana whispered:

“He’s her father.””

The video stopped.

Marcus felt numb.

Because there was something he had never questioned.

Something everyone had accepted.

The timeline.

Maya was born.

Alana disappeared.

He became a single father.

Then Vanessa entered his life.

But what if there was something before that?

Something nobody told him?

Marcus turned slowly toward Vanessa.

“Marcus: Was Maya ever in danger?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Maya looked at her.

“Vanessa?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Maya shook her head.

“You keep saying that.””

The sentence was quiet.

But it hurt.

The front door handle moved.

Everyone froze.

Daniel had entered.

Somehow.

Marcus immediately moved Maya behind him.

A man stepped into the hallway.

Early forties.

Calm.

Expensive coat.

No weapon.

No aggression.

Just confidence.

“Daniel: Hello, Marcus.””

Marcus stared.

“How did you get in?””

Daniel looked around the mansion.

“Daniel: You really don’t know?””

Vanessa whispered:

“He still has access.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“That’s the problem with secrets.””

He looked at Maya.

“Daniel: They always leave a door open.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You stay away from her.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Not fear.

Sadness.

“Daniel: I’m not here to hurt Maya.””

“Then why are you here?””

Daniel looked directly at Marcus.

“Because Alana asked me to make sure you learned the truth.””

Marcus’s heart stopped.

“You saw her?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“When?””

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

“Last night.””

Vanessa went pale.

Marcus noticed.

“You knew she was alive.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

The betrayal cut deeper than before.

Daniel watched him carefully.

“Marcus, there’s something you need to understand.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Maya wasn’t hidden because Alana was afraid of losing her.””

A pause.

“She was hidden because someone was afraid of what Maya would reveal.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

Then at Vanessa.

May you like

Then back at Daniel.

“What did Maya reveal?””
