Chapter 13: The Truth Alana Left Behind

Marcus stared at the message on the screen.

Nobody moved.

The mansion that once represented safety now felt like a trap.

Every hallway.

Every room.

Every memory.

Everything had another meaning.

The message from Ethan remained visible.

*Now find out why Alana chose to leave you.*

Marcus slowly looked around.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Adrian.

Three people who had spent years carrying pieces of the truth.

Three people who had allowed him to live inside a lie.

But one thing bothered him more than anything.

Alana’s final message.

*Do not trust the person who brought you the truth.*

Marcus turned toward Daniel.

“Marcus: You brought me here.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“You showed me the files.””

“Yes.””

“You knew where to look.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Why?””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Because Alana asked me to.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Everything always comes back to Alana.””

He pointed toward the screen.

“She trusted you. She trusted Vanessa. She trusted Adrian.””

His voice cracked.

“But she didn’t trust me.””

The words hurt everyone in the room.

Especially Vanessa.

She looked down.

Daniel quietly said:

“She did.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“She left.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“She ran.””

Marcus stared.

“There’s a difference.””

Daniel looked at the video.

“She left because she believed staying would destroy you.””

Marcus felt anger rise.

“Then she should have let me choose.””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s answer surprised him.

“She should have.””

Silence.

Then Daniel continued.

“That was her biggest regret.””

Marcus looked at the screen.

The image of Alana holding baby Maya remained frozen.

A woman he loved.

A woman he lost.

A woman who had been alive all this time.

And still somehow far away.

“Where is she?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus’s voice became sharper.

“Where is Alana?””

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“She’s nearby.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

“She never left the city.””

His heart stopped.

“All these years?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She watched from a distance.””

Marcus stepped back.

“That makes no sense.””

“She wanted to come back.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“Because every time she tried, someone stopped her.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Then Adrian.

Then Vanessa.

“Who?””

The answer came from the computer.

A new video opened automatically.

Not from Ethan.

From Alana.

She appeared older.

Tired.

But alive.

Marcus immediately moved closer.

“Marcus…”

Her voice alone nearly broke him.

“If you’re watching this, then you know the truth is finally coming out.””

She looked away briefly.

“I wanted to tell you everything myself.””

A tear formed in her eye.

“But I was afraid.””

Marcus whispered:

“Why?””

The video continued.

“I wasn’t afraid of losing my life.””

She paused.

“I was afraid of losing Maya.””

Maya stepped closer.

Her eyes fixed on the screen.

Alana looked directly into the camera.

“Maya, if you ever see this…”

The little girl covered her mouth.

“I need you to know something.””

Alana smiled sadly.

“I never forgot you for one second.””

Maya started crying.

Marcus held her hand.

Alana continued.

“The person who hurt our family wasn’t someone who hated us.””

She looked down.

“It was someone who loved us.””

Marcus froze.

Ethan.

Alana continued.

“That’s what made it dangerous.””

The video flickered.

Then a final message appeared.

*Meet me where it started.*

Below it was an address.

Marcus recognized it.

His old family property.

The house where he grew up.

The place his father left behind.

Adrian whispered:

“He wants us to go there.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Who?””

Adrian stared at the screen.

“Ethan.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“He wants us to think that.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at the message.

“Because Ethan always planned ahead.””

He looked toward Maya.

“He knew we would find this.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Then what do we do?””

Marcus looked at everyone.

For the first time in years, he wasn’t the man being protected from the truth.

He was the person facing it.

“We go.””

Vanessa looked worried.

“Marcus…”

“No more running.””

He looked at Maya.

“But she stays here.””

Maya immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus sighed.

“Maya.””

“I’m part of this.””

The words stopped him.

Because they were true.

She had been part of it from the beginning.

Marcus knelt.

“You’re eight years old.””

“And I’m the reason everyone is fighting.””

His heart broke.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Maya looked at him.

“I’m tired of people saying it’s not my fault while hiding everything from me.””

Marcus had no answer.

Because she was right.

He pulled her into a hug.

“Okay.””

Everyone looked surprised.

“But you stay with me.””

Maya nodded.

The group prepared to leave.

But before Marcus reached the door, his phone buzzed.

A final message.

Not from Ethan.

From Alana.

*Marcus, before you come here, ask Vanessa what she promised me the night I disappeared.*

Marcus slowly turned.

Everyone saw his expression.

Vanessa knew.

She whispered:

“She told you.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What promise?””

May you like

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“The promise I broke.””
