Chapter 9: The Memory Maya Buried

Marcus forgot how to breathe.

For eight years, he had protected Maya from the pain of losing her mother.

Now he realized his daughter had been carrying a memory he never knew existed.

He crouched in front of her.

“Maya, look at me.””

She did.

“Marcus: You don’t have to say anything you don’t want to.””

Maya shook her head.

“I want to.””

Her voice trembled.

“I’m tired of not knowing.””

Marcus held her hand.

“Okay.””

Vanessa stood nearby.

Her face was full of guilt.

Daniel stayed silent.

Maya looked down at the floor.

“I don’t remember everything.””

“That’s okay.””

“But I remember pieces.””

Marcus swallowed.

“What pieces?””

Maya closed her eyes.

“I remember rain.””

The mansion became silent.

“I remember Mommy crying.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“I remember a car.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What color?””

Maya looked at him.

“Black.””

Daniel looked away.

Like he already knew.

Maya continued.

“I remember Mommy holding me.””

Her voice became smaller.

“She told me to be brave.””

Marcus felt tears in his eyes.

“Did she say anything else?””

Maya nodded.

“She said…”

She stopped.

Marcus waited.

“What?””

Maya whispered:

“She said, ‘Don’t trust him.’”

Everyone froze.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Who?””

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Think.””

Marcus immediately regretted the word.

Maya flinched.

He softened.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked down.

“I was little.””

“I know.””

“I remember someone’s voice.””

Marcus leaned closer.

“What voice?””

Maya’s fingers tightened around his.

“Someone who was angry.””

A pause.

“Someone who said Mommy ruined everything.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel looked toward her.

Marcus noticed.

“Vanessa?””

She looked terrified.

“You know who it is.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Marcus stood.

“Tell me.””

She shook her head.

“I can’t.””

His expression hardened.

“You still can’t?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“If I say his name, there is no going back.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“There was never going back.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Your brother.””

Marcus froze.

The words didn’t make sense.

“My brother?””

Daniel looked down.

Marcus stared.

“My brother has been dead for years.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

“Then what are you saying?””

She took a breath.

“Your brother wasn’t the person we thought he was.””

Marcus felt dizzy.

Memories rushed back.

His younger brother.

The arguments.

The jealousy.

The way he disappeared from family events after their father’s death.

The last conversation they had.

“You’ll regret believing everyone, Marcus.””

At the time, Marcus thought it was anger.

Now it sounded different.

“Impossible.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“It’s possible.””

Marcus turned.

“How?””

Daniel looked at the hidden files.

“Because he wasn’t alone.””

The security monitor suddenly flickered.

A new camera feed appeared.

A live feed.

The mansion driveway.

Marcus stared.

A car was arriving.

But this time, he recognized it.

His hands went cold.

Because it belonged to someone who should never have been able to drive it.

Someone who had been gone for years.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Marcus stepped closer.

The car door opened.

A figure stepped out.

The camera angle was unclear.

But the walk.

The posture.

The familiar shape.

Marcus knew.

“No…”

Maya looked up.

“Daddy?””

Marcus couldn’t answer.

The figure walked toward the mansion.

Slowly.

Confidently.

Like they owned the place.

The front door camera activated.

The person stood outside.

Then looked directly into the camera.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Because the face appeared.

Older.

Changed.

But impossible to mistake.

His brother.

Alive.

The intercom clicked.

A familiar voice filled the mansion.

“Marcus.””

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

“I think it’s time you learned what really happened to Alana.””

Marcus stepped closer.

May you like

His brother smiled through the camera.

“And why your daughter remembers the night I saved her life.””
