Chapter 1: You’re Leaving Today

“You’re leaving today.””

Olivia Carter whispered the words with a smile, twirling Ariana’s bedroom key around her finger as Ariana stepped into the bright, elegant foyer of her own home.

Ariana froze.

Three packed suitcases stood beside the front door. Her clothes had been folded into neat stacks inside them. Her shoes were lined up on top of the largest suitcase, and the framed photograph of her late grandmother had been placed carelessly between two bags.

For a moment, Ariana simply stared.

Then she looked at her eighteen-year-old stepsister.

“What?”” Ariana asked.

Olivia tilted her head, admiring the silver key dangling from her fingers.

“You heard me,” Olivia replied.

“You’re moving out.””

Ariana dropped her backpack onto the polished floor.

“Why are my things packed?””

From the hallway, Monica appeared in a cream designer blouse and tailored trousers. Ariana’s stepmother carried a leather folder beneath one arm, looking less like a woman who had just packed her stepdaughter’s life into suitcases and more like someone preparing for a business meeting.

“Because it’s time for you to go somewhere else,” Monica said.

Ariana stared at her.

“Somewhere else? This is my home.””

Monica stopped beside Olivia and straightened her daughter’s sleeve.

“Your father and I have discussed this.””

“No, you haven’t.”” Ariana’s voice trembled.

“Dad would have told me.””

Monica opened the leather folder, removed a sheet of paper, and held it out without meeting Ariana’s eyes.

“Your living arrangements are changing. You’re nineteen, Ariana. You need to learn how the real world works.””

Ariana didn’t take the paper.

“Then call Dad. Let him tell me himself.””

Olivia laughed under her breath.

“He’s busy. Not everybody can put their life on hold because you’re upset.””

Ariana turned toward her stepsister.

“Give me my key.””

Olivia raised the key above her shoulder.

“Come get it.””

“Olivia, I’m not playing with you.””

“Neither am I.””

Ariana reached for the key. Olivia pulled her hand away, then stepped directly into Ariana’s path.

“You’ve had your own room long enough,” Olivia said.

“I think it’s somebody else’s turn.””

“Your room is right across the hall!””

“And now I want yours.””

Ariana looked toward the staircase. Her bedroom door was visible from the foyer, standing slightly open. She could see the edge of her white comforter and the small wooden jewelry box her grandmother had given her.

Someone had already stripped the room of its ordinary life.

Her stomach tightened.

“Did you go through my things?”” Ariana asked.

Monica sighed as though Ariana were embarrassing herself in public.

“Everything necessary has been handled.””

“By whom?””

“Enough, Ariana.””

“No!”” Ariana's voice cracked.

“You packed my clothes while I was gone, and now you're telling me to leave without even talking to Dad?””

Monica stepped closer.

“Watch your tone.””

“Then stop treating me like I don't belong here!””

For one brief second, Monica's pleasant expression disappeared.

“You should be grateful we've allowed you to stay this long.””

Ariana blinked.

“Allowed me?””

Olivia leaned against the wall, turning the key between her thumb and forefinger.

“Mom has been more than patient with you.””

“This is my father's house,” Ariana said.

“And I'm his daughter.””

Monica's jaw tightened.

“Being his daughter doesn't give you the right to make this household revolve around you.””

Ariana reached for her backpack.

“I'm calling him.””

She pulled out her phone, but Olivia moved quickly, snatching the backpack away and dropping it onto the nearest suitcase.

“Stop acting like a victim,” Olivia said.

“Give me my bag!””

“Make me.””

Ariana stepped forward.

Olivia suddenly shoved her with both hands.

Ariana stumbled backward and struck the hallway wall with her shoulder. The impact knocked a framed family photograph crooked. Her breath escaped in a sharp gasp.

For a second, neither girl moved.

Then Ariana pushed Olivia away from her.

“Don't touch me!””

Monica screamed so loudly that Ariana flinched.

“She attacked my daughter!””

“What?”” Ariana stared at her.

“She pushed me!””

“Olivia, are you hurt?”” Monica demanded, pulling her daughter behind her.

Olivia rubbed her arm theatrically.

“Mom, she just went crazy!””

Ariana looked between them, stunned by how quickly the story had changed.

“You both saw what happened!””

Monica pointed toward the front door.

“Get your things and leave.””

“I am not leaving until I speak to Dad.””

“Then you should have thought about that before attacking Olivia.””

Footsteps sounded on the front porch.

The door handle turned.

Everyone went silent.

The front door swung inward, and Marcus Carter walked into the foyer wearing a navy blazer, a pale blue shirt, and the expression of a man who had expected an ordinary afternoon at home.

He stopped when he saw the suitcases.

His eyes moved to Ariana, whose shoulder rested against the wall. Then to Olivia, who was hiding behind Monica.

Finally, he looked at his wife.

“Why,” Marcus asked quietly, “are my daughter's clothes packed?””

May you like

Monica's face changed.

And Olivia stopped twirling the key.
