Chapter 10: The Truth Behind the Alternate Declaration

“It's already been filed.””

Monica's words fell into the foyer like a glass shattering against stone.

Marcus stared at his wife.

“What did you just say?””

Monica gripped the back of a chair.

“The alternate declaration. It was filed.””

“When?””

She swallowed.

“Last week.””

Ariana felt her knees weaken. She reached for the console, her fingers brushing the cracked photograph of her grandmother.

Last week.

That meant the paperwork had been moving forward while she was going to class, coming home, and sleeping in the bedroom someone had apparently decided she no longer deserved.

Marcus picked up his phone.

“I'm calling my attorney.””

Monica stepped toward him.

“Marcus, please. Let me explain before you do something that can't be undone.””

He looked at her with an expression so controlled that Ariana found it more frightening than anger.

“You have had all afternoon to explain.””

“I was trying to protect Olivia.””

“From what?””

“From being left with nothing!””

Olivia recoiled.

“Mom, stop saying that!””

Monica turned toward her daughter.

“You don't understand what I've done for you.””

“No,” Olivia said, tears running down her face.

“I don't. You told me Dad was giving me the house. You told me Ariana was leaving because it was already decided. You told me everything was legal.””

“I believed we could resolve it.””

“You told me not to read the documents!””

Monica's mouth opened.

Marcus stopped dialing.

“You told her not to read the documents?””

Monica looked away.

Olivia wiped her face with both hands.

“Ethan said I only needed to sign the supporting pages. Mom said the details were already handled. I asked if Ariana knew, and Mom said she would understand once she had somewhere else to live.””

Ariana stared at her stepsister.

“You both planned this while I was still living here.””

Olivia nodded miserably.

“I thought it would happen without hurting you.””

Ariana let out a short, disbelieving breath.

“You shoved me into a wall.””

Olivia covered her mouth.

“I know.””

“You stole my key.””

“I know.””

“You watched her blame me for what you did.””

Olivia's shoulders shook.

“I know, Ariana. I'm sorry.””

Ariana looked away. The apology was real enough to hurt, but it couldn't erase the fear she had felt standing between the wall and the suitcases.

Marcus finally called his attorney.

He explained the new information, read the disputed clause aloud, and asked for an immediate review of the filing.

His attorney's answer was direct.

“Marcus, do not assume a filed document establishes valid ownership. We need to obtain the actual filing, identify the basis on which it was accepted, and determine whether it can legally affect your property.””

“How quickly can we do that?””

“I'll start immediately. Preserve the messages and every page you have. Do not sign anything or agree to any proposed settlement until we've reviewed it.””

Marcus ended the call.

Then he turned toward Monica.

“Where is the copy of the alternate declaration?””

Monica shook her head.

“I don't have it.””

“Who does?””

“Ethan.””

Marcus looked at Olivia.

“Can you contact him?””

Olivia nodded, but her hands trembled as she opened her phone.

Before she could dial, a new message appeared.

*We need to talk. Tell your father to stop involving lawyers. If he cooperates, we can still make this work.*

Olivia showed Marcus.

He read the message and handed the phone back.

“Ask him to bring the original declaration here.””

Olivia typed slowly.

*Dad wants to see the complete document. Bring everything you have.*

The reply came almost immediately.

*Absolutely not. You were supposed to keep this between us.*

Olivia's face crumpled.

“He's blaming me.””

Marcus spoke gently.

“Save the message.””

She did.

Then another message arrived.

*Your mother promised me this would be settled before the wedding. Ask her what she signed.*

Everyone turned toward Monica.

She backed away from the console.

“Don't listen to him. He's trying to shift the blame.””

Marcus held her gaze.

“Did you sign something?””

Monica's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

Olivia stared at her.

“What did you sign?””

Monica pressed her trembling fingers against her lips.

“A declaration confirming that you were intended to receive the property.””

Marcus took one step forward.

“On what authority?””

“I thought it was a supporting statement.””

“Did you read it?””

Monica's silence was answer enough.

Marcus shook his head.

“You signed a declaration concerning property you do not own, without my authorization, and without understanding what it said?””

“I trusted Ethan!””

“And you expected everyone else to live with the consequences.””

Monica began to cry.

For a moment, Ariana felt the old instinct to comfort her stepmother. It was an instinct formed over years of trying to keep peace in a household where every disagreement somehow became Ariana's fault.

But she remembered the suitcases.

She remembered Olivia's hands striking her shoulder.

She remembered Monica shouting that Ariana had attacked her daughter.

This time, Ariana stayed where she was.

“Why did you want me gone before Dad saw the papers?”” she asked.

Monica looked at her.

“Because Ethan said the transfer would be easier if you weren't involved.””

“Why?””

“Because your grandmother's trust complicated the transaction.””

Ariana's breath caught.

“Complicated it how?””

Monica wiped her cheeks.

“Your grandmother had made arrangements that could give you certain rights connected to the property. Ethan said that if the transfer was completed before anyone challenged it, those arrangements wouldn't interfere.””

Marcus's face hardened.

“So you knew Ariana's interests could be affected.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped proceed anyway.””

Monica nodded.

Olivia stepped away from her mother.

“You told me Ariana had no rights.””

“I thought the documents would resolve everything.””

“You told me she was selfish for wanting to stay in her own room!””

Monica looked at the key still clenched in Olivia's hand.

“I made a terrible mistake.””

Ariana's voice was quiet.

“You didn't make one mistake, Monica. You made a decision every time you had a chance to tell the truth.””

Monica looked as though Ariana had struck her.

Then the doorbell rang.

Marcus turned toward the entrance.

Through the glass panel, he saw Ethan Brooks standing on the porch, dressed in a dark jacket and holding a thick document folder.

Olivia took a step backward.

“He came.””

Marcus opened the door.

Ethan entered with a practiced smile that disappeared when he saw the papers spread across the console.

“Mr. Carter,” he said.

“I think we can settle this without making it uglier than it needs to be.””

Marcus closed the door.

“Put the folder on the table.””

Ethan hesitated.

“Of course.””

He placed it beside the property transfer.

Marcus did not offer him a seat.

“Is the alternate declaration in there?””

Ethan glanced at Monica.

“Yes.””

“Then explain why it was filed without my authorization.””

Ethan straightened his jacket.

“The documents were submitted based on representations made to me. I believed the necessary approvals were in place.””

“Whose representations?””

Ethan looked at Monica again.

“She told me the family had agreed.””

Monica shook her head.

“You said you had checked everything!””

“I said I was handling the paperwork.””

“You told me the transfer was legitimate!””

Ethan's voice sharpened.

“You signed the declaration.””

Monica fell silent.

Marcus opened the folder.

Inside were copies of the alternate declaration, several supporting pages, and a separate agreement containing Olivia's signature.

He turned to the last page.

Then he looked at Ethan.

“This signature isn't mine.””

Ethan's expression barely changed.

“I can't speak to how that signature was obtained.””

“Then who can?””

“My attorney will address any questions through the appropriate channels.””

Marcus set the page down.

“That's fine. My attorney will contact yours.””

Ethan's composure began to crack.

“Mr. Carter, you need to understand that this arrangement was designed to provide Olivia with security. Nobody intended for Ariana to be harmed.””

Ariana stepped forward.

“Then why did you tell Olivia to get me out of the house before the paperwork was delivered?””

Ethan turned toward her.

“This is a misunderstanding between adults.””

“I'm the person you wanted removed.””

“I was trying to avoid conflict.””

“You told Olivia not to let Dad see the final page.””

Ethan said nothing.

“And you told her to use an alternate declaration if I refused to cooperate.””

His jaw tightened.

“That message has been taken out of context.””

Ariana stared at him.

“Then explain the context.””

For the first time, Ethan had no smooth answer.

Marcus closed the folder.

“That's enough. You will leave the documents here for my attorney to review, or you can take them with you and explain to your attorney why you refused to preserve them after being notified of a dispute.””

Ethan glanced toward Monica.

She wouldn't meet his eyes.

After a long pause, he pushed the folder across the console.

“My attorney will be in touch.””

“I expect so,” Marcus replied.

Ethan walked to the front door and left without another word.

The door clicked shut.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Olivia removed Ariana's bedroom key from her pocket.

She approached her stepsister and held it out.

“I'm sorry.””

Ariana looked at the key.

“You can't fix this with a key.””

“I know.””

“You need to tell the truth about everything you signed and everything Ethan told you.””

Olivia nodded.

“I will.””

Ariana took the key.

Monica stood beside the staircase, crying quietly.

Marcus turned toward her.

“You and I will discuss our marriage separately. Right now, my attorney will handle the property documents, and Olivia will cooperate with the review. Nobody will pressure Ariana to leave this house.””

Monica lowered her head.

“I understand.””

“No,” Marcus said.

“You understand what happens when the truth comes out. I need to know whether you understand what you've done to your family.””

Monica couldn't answer.

An hour later, Marcus received a call from his attorney confirming that the disputed filing had been located and that formal steps were being taken to challenge it. The attorney cautioned that the outcome would depend on the evidence and the applicable legal process, but the filing did not, by itself, settle ownership.

The original trust records would be examined alongside the disputed signatures, the messages, and the declarations.

There would be no instant verdict.

No magical confession that could repair everything.

But the truth would no longer be hidden inside a suitcase.

As the afternoon sunlight stretched across the foyer, Ariana carried her grandmother's photograph upstairs. Marcus followed, carrying the cracked frame carefully in both hands.

At the bedroom door, Ariana stopped.

“Dad?””

He looked at her.

“Grandma wanted me to be safe, didn't she?””

Marcus nodded.

“She wanted you to have choices. She wanted you to know that you deserved a home where nobody could make you feel disposable.””

Ariana looked at the bedroom key in her palm.

“Then I'm staying.””

Marcus wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

“Then you're staying.””

Downstairs, Olivia sat alone beside the packed suitcases. Monica stood near the console, staring at the documents that had exposed everything she had tried to conceal.

Neither woman followed Ariana upstairs.

For the first time in months, Ariana didn't feel the need to ask permission to belong.

She unlocked her bedroom door.

Inside, her bed was still made, her desk still stood beside the window, and the small wooden jewelry box her grandmother had given her remained on the dresser.

Ariana placed the photograph beside it.

Then she turned toward her father.

“I'm not ready to forgive them.””

Marcus nodded.

“You don't have to decide that today.””

She stepped into the room, leaving the door open behind her.

And downstairs, beside the front door where her suitcases had waited, the bedroom key no longer belonged to Olivia.

May you like

It belonged to Ariana.

This time, nobody would take it from her.
