Chapter 7: The Daughter They Tried to Erase

Marcus stared at the words beneath the heading.

*FINAL BENEFICIARY: ARIANA CARTER.*

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Ariana stood beside him, her fingers curled tightly into the sleeves of her sweatshirt. Olivia remained near the staircase, while Monica backed away from the console as though the papers might catch fire.

“Dad,” Ariana whispered, “why is my name on there?””

Marcus lifted the declaration.

“I don't know yet.””

Monica shook her head.

“This is being taken out of context.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then put it into context.””

She opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

He turned to the attached agreement and read the first paragraph. The document described a proposed transfer of the property, followed by conditions that would determine who received the house or its proceeds if the transfer failed.

Ariana leaned closer.

“What does that mean?””

“It means this agreement claims to explain what should happen under certain circumstances,” Marcus said.

“But I need my attorney to verify what it actually does.””

Olivia stepped forward.

“Dad, why would Ethan put Ariana's name on something meant for me?””

Marcus looked at her.

“That's what we're going to find out.””

Monica reached toward the agreement.

“Give me that.””

Marcus pulled it away.

“No.””

“You don't understand what you're holding!””

“Then explain it!””

Monica's voice rose.

“I was trying to protect everyone!””

“By putting my signature on a document I never signed?””

“I didn't forge your signature!””

The words escaped her before she could stop them.

Silence filled the foyer.

Marcus lowered the papers.

“I never said you forged it.””

Monica stared at him.

Ariana felt a cold sensation creep up her arms.

“Why did you say that, Monica?””

Monica's expression hardened.

“Because that's what you're all thinking.””

Marcus placed the declaration on the console.

“I'm thinking someone prepared a transfer without my authorization, someone tried to get Ariana out of this house before I could see it, and someone has been hiding the accompanying agreement. Those are facts. Everything else needs to be established.””

He picked up his phone and called his attorney.

When the call connected, Marcus read the title of the new document and described the beneficiary clause.

His attorney listened without interrupting.

Finally, the man said, “Don't assume the declaration means what its title suggests. I need the entire agreement, including every signature page and attachment.””

“I have it.””

“Photograph each page before handing over the originals. Keep the original documents together. I'll arrange for them to be reviewed.””

Marcus looked at Ariana.

“Can you help me photograph these?””

She nodded.

Together, they spread the documents across the console table. Ariana carefully photographed each page while Marcus checked that nothing had been missed.

When she reached the final attachment, she stopped.

“Dad, there's another name here.””

Marcus leaned over her shoulder.

The page contained a list of conditions and a reference to an earlier family trust established by Ariana's grandmother.

Ariana's breath caught.

“Grandma's trust?””

Marcus read the paragraph twice.

“My mother established a trust years ago. I knew it existed, but I never saw this document.””

Monica looked away.

Ariana turned toward her.

“You knew about Grandma's trust?””

Monica's silence lasted too long.

Marcus straightened.

“Monica?””

“I knew your mother had made financial arrangements.””

“What arrangements?””

“She was very private about her affairs.””

“That doesn't answer the question.””

Monica pressed her palms together.

“Your mother-in-law—” She stopped, then corrected herself.

“Your mother wanted Ariana to have security. Everyone knew that.””

Ariana stared at her.

“Then why did you tell me I had to leave?””

Monica's face tightened.

“Because things weren't as simple as you think.””

“Make them simple.””

For a moment, Monica looked genuinely exhausted.

Then her gaze shifted toward the papers.

“Your grandmother's arrangements could become complicated if the family property was divided.””

Marcus frowned.

“Divided how?””

Monica didn't answer.

Olivia stepped toward her mother.

“You told me the house would belong to me.””

“I told you we were making arrangements.””

“You said Ariana had no claim to anything!””

Ariana felt as if the floor had shifted beneath her.

Marcus turned sharply.

“Monica, did you tell Olivia that Ariana had no claim to her grandmother's trust?””

Monica lifted her chin.

“I said Ariana couldn't expect every decision to revolve around her inheritance.””

Ariana blinked.

“My inheritance?””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

“I didn't know your grandmother had left you anything specific.””

“Neither did I.””

Monica's expression hardened.

“Your grandmother made her wishes clear to me.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What wishes?””

“She wanted Olivia and Ariana to be treated fairly.””

“Fairly doesn't mean secretly packing one daughter's belongings while preparing documents for the other.””

Monica flinched.

Olivia began crying again.

“I didn't know about any trust,” she said.

“Ethan told me Dad was going to give me the house as a wedding gift.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Did you believe I would transfer a property worth this much without discussing it with you or Ariana?””

Olivia lowered her eyes.

“I wanted to believe it.””

Ariana looked at the bedroom key still clutched in her stepsister's hand.

“And you wanted my room.””

Olivia closed her fingers around the key.

“I thought it was already decided.””

“Nothing was decided with me,” Ariana replied.

The words came out quietly, but they silenced Olivia.

Marcus returned to the documents.

“There's one more thing we need to establish. Why was Ariana supposed to leave today?””

Monica looked toward the staircase.

“Because the agreement was supposed to be finalized.””

“By whom?””

“Ethan was handling the paperwork.””

“And you knew he was coming?””

Monica didn't respond.

Marcus nodded slowly, as though another piece of the puzzle had fallen into place.

He called his attorney again and asked him to check whether the property transfer or any related filing had been submitted. Then he requested an urgent review of the trust reference.

When he ended the call, he looked at Ariana.

“Until we know what's happening, your room stays yours. Nobody touches your belongings.””

Ariana's eyes filled.

“Thank you, Dad.””

Marcus embraced her carefully, mindful of her sore shoulder.

Over his shoulder, Ariana saw Monica staring at the final beneficiary declaration.

Monica wasn't looking at Olivia's name.

She wasn't even looking at Marcus.

She was looking at the paragraph referring to the trust.

Then Monica quietly said, “You shouldn't have received that page.””

Marcus released Ariana.

“What did you say?””

Monica looked up.

For the first time that afternoon, there was no attempt to sound reasonable.

“I said that page was never supposed to be included.””

Marcus reached for the document.

“Who decided that?””

Monica's lips trembled.

Before she could answer, Ariana's phone vibrated on the console.

An unknown number had sent her a message.

*Your grandmother left instructions that Monica was never supposed to see. Ask your father what happened the week before she died.*

Ariana read it twice.

Then she looked at Marcus.

“Dad, what happened the week before Grandma died?””

May you like

His face changed.

And Monica whispered, “Don't answer that.””
