Chapter 6: The Final Page

Olivia stared at the message until the screen dimmed.

Her face had gone white.

Marcus held out his hand.

“Let me see.””

She hesitated.

“Olivia.””

Slowly, she gave him the phone.

Marcus read the message once. Then he read it again, his jaw tightening with every word.

Monica reached for the device.

“That's private.””

Marcus moved it out of reach.

“Private? He's threatening your daughter while discussing a document that concerns my property.””

“Ethan is under pressure,” Monica said.

“You don't know the circumstances.””

“Then explain them.””

Monica pressed her lips together.

Marcus turned to Olivia.

“Has he sent you messages like this before?””

Olivia shook her head, then stopped.

“Not exactly.””

“What does that mean?””

“He gets angry when I ask questions about the paperwork. He says I don't understand business and should let him handle things.””

Ariana folded her arms.

“And you believed him?””

Olivia looked at her with wet eyes.

“I wanted to believe him.””

“You helped him take my room.””

“I know.””

“You watched Mom blame me after you shoved me.””

“I know!””

Olivia's voice broke.

She dropped into the chair beside the staircase and covered her face.

“I thought if I did what Mom asked, everything would finally be okay. Ethan said we could get married without worrying about money. Mom said Dad would eventually accept it. Nobody told me what was actually in the documents.””

Marcus remained standing.

“Did you ever see the final page?””

Olivia lowered her hands.

“No. Ethan kept the agreement in his briefcase. He said it was confidential until the transfer was completed.””

Marcus glanced at Monica.

“And you were comfortable with that?””

Monica looked away.

Ariana stepped toward the console.

“Dad, what if the final page explains why he wants me gone?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“That's exactly what we're going to find out.””

He called his attorney again.

This time, he didn't bother to sit down.

“There's been another development,” Marcus said.

“The fiancé has the accompanying agreement and is refusing to produce it. He's also sent a message warning my daughter not to show me the final page.””

His attorney's voice sharpened.

“Do you have a copy of that message?””

“Yes.””

“Preserve it. Don't delete anything, and don't allow anyone to alter or remove the documents you already have. I'll begin requesting the relevant records.””

“Can you find out whether the transfer was completed?””

“I'll check the available records and the status of any filing. Until I have confirmation, we shouldn't assume the transfer is legally effective or ineffective.””

Marcus glanced at the front door.

“And if the agreement contains something beyond the property transfer?””

“Then we need to review the exact language before drawing conclusions.””

Marcus ended the call.

Monica shook her head.

“This is getting out of control.””

Marcus turned to her.

“It got out of control when you decided my daughter should be removed from her home without my knowledge.””

“I was trying to prevent conflict.””

“You created conflict, Monica. And now I want the truth.””

For a moment, Monica looked as if she might finally confess.

Instead, she walked toward the staircase and gripped the railing.

“I have spent years trying to make this family work.””

Ariana's voice was quiet.

“By making me feel like I don't belong?””

Monica turned.

“You have no idea what I've sacrificed.””

“Then tell me.””

Monica stared at her stepdaughter, her expression twisting between anger and fear.

“You think your father is the only person who has ever made sacrifices in this house?””

“No,” Ariana replied.

“I think you're using your sacrifices to justify hurting me.””

Monica's eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained sharp.

“You've always had him on your side.””

“Because he's my father!””

“And Olivia is my daughter!””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Neither girl should have to fight for a place in this family.””

Monica laughed bitterly.

“That's easy for you to say. You leave for work, and I deal with everything here.””

“Then we should have discussed it. You don't get to solve a family disagreement by secretly packing Ariana's belongings.””

Olivia looked up.

“Mom, why did you say Ariana had to leave before the wedding?””

Monica's head snapped toward her.

“Because the situation was complicated.””

“What situation?””

“Olivia, please.””

“No. Ethan's threatening me, Dad thinks someone forged his signature, and Ariana's bags are by the door. I want to know what I'm supposed to be getting married into.””

Monica gripped the railing harder.

“You're too emotional to understand.””

“Then explain it to me!””

Ariana watched the exchange, her heart pounding. Olivia had spent the afternoon acting as though she had already won. Now she looked like a girl discovering that the prize she had been promised might not exist.

Marcus approached his younger daughter.

“Olivia, I need you to think carefully. Did Ethan ever ask you to sign anything?””

She nodded.

“What did you sign?””

“A few pages. He said they were related to wedding expenses and financial planning.””

“Did you read them?””

Olivia looked down.

“Not all of them.””

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

“Did he give you copies?””

“He said he'd send them later.””

“And did you receive them?””

“No.””

Ariana felt a chill run through her.

“Olivia, did he ask you to tell me to leave today before he came over?””

Olivia nodded.

“He said it would be easier if you weren't here when the final paperwork was delivered.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Delivered by whom?””

“Ethan said someone would bring it to the house.””

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

The doorbell rang.

All four of them turned.

Ariana's heart jumped into her throat.

Nobody moved toward the door.

The bell rang a second time.

Marcus raised one hand, signaling everyone to stay where they were. He crossed the foyer and looked through the clear glass panel beside the front door.

A Black delivery driver stood on the porch, holding a large document envelope. His face was plainly visible in the daylight.

Marcus opened the door but kept one hand on the handle.

“Can I help you?””

The driver checked the label.

“Delivery for Marcus Carter. Signature required.””

Marcus examined the envelope.

His full name was printed on the front. Beneath it was a return address belonging to a law office he didn't recognize.

“Who sent this?””

The driver checked his handheld device.

“It's listed as an urgent legal delivery. I just need your signature.””

Marcus didn't take the pen.

“Who is the sender?””

“I'm sorry, sir. That's all the information I have.””

Marcus looked at the envelope again.

There was a handwritten note beneath the address.

*For Marcus alone. Do not let Monica open this.*

Behind him, Monica made a strangled sound.

Marcus slowly turned.

She was staring at the envelope as if she recognized it.

“Monica,” he said, “what is this?””

She shook her head.

“I've never seen it.””

But her hands were trembling.

Marcus turned back toward the driver.

“Who requested this delivery?””

The driver checked the screen one more time.

“Ethan Brooks.””

Olivia stumbled backward.

Ariana reached for her arm.

Marcus accepted the envelope without signing anything that suggested agreement with its contents. He closed the door and placed the delivery on the console beside the property transfer.

For several seconds, he studied the handwriting.

Then he opened the envelope.

Inside lay a second property agreement, several pages of financial records, and a single sheet marked *FINAL BENEFICIARY DECLARATION*.

Marcus lifted the declaration.

His eyes moved down the page.

Ariana watched the color drain from his face.

“Dad?””

He didn't answer.

He turned the page toward the light and examined the signature at the bottom.

Then he looked at Monica.

“You told me you had nothing to do with this.””

Monica backed away from the console.

Marcus held up the declaration.

“Then why does this document say that if the property transfer fails, the house and its proceeds are supposed to go to—”

He stopped.

Olivia covered her mouth.

Ariana stepped closer to read the name.

And Marcus realized that the most shocking part of the agreement wasn't the signature, the transfer, or even the plan to force Ariana out.

It was the name printed beneath the words *FINAL BENEFICIARY*.

Because it wasn't Olivia Carter.

It was Ariana Carter.
