Chapter 9: The Witness at the Front Door

Marcus approached the front door but paused before opening it.

He looked back at Monica.

“Why would Ethan tell Olivia never to contact Daniel Whitmore?””

Monica shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“I'm beginning to think that phrase means something different to you than it does to me.””

Marcus opened the door.

A Black man in his early fifties stood on the porch, dressed in a charcoal suit and holding a slim document case. His face was calm, but his eyes moved immediately to the papers visible on the console.

“Mr. Carter?”” he asked.

“Yes.””

“Daniel Whitmore. Your attorney contacted me about a certification associated with a property transfer.””

Marcus stepped aside.

“Come in.””

Daniel entered the bright foyer and stopped when he saw Monica.

For one brief moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Daniel closed his document case.

“Monica.””

She gripped the staircase railing.

“Daniel.””

Marcus looked from one to the other.

“You know each other.””

Daniel nodded.

“We've met professionally.””

Monica's voice sharpened.

“You were not supposed to come here.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I'm here because I was asked to provide records concerning a document that bears my name.””

Marcus closed the front door.

“Then let's stop speaking in riddles. Did you certify this property transfer?””

Daniel removed a pair of reading glasses and examined the page Marcus offered him.

He studied the heading, the certification block, and the signature attributed to him.

Then he turned the page over.

“No,” he said.

Marcus's shoulders tightened.

“You're certain?””

“I'm saying I did not prepare or certify this document. Whether someone has misused my name or reproduced my certification details will require a proper examination.””

Monica looked away.

Daniel continued.

“I received an inquiry from your attorney because my name appeared on the copy you provided. I brought the records I still have concerning the earlier trust arrangements, along with documentation that may help establish whether this certification is genuine.””

Marcus gestured toward the console.

“Please show me.””

Daniel opened his case and removed several organized folders. He placed one on the table and carefully aligned it with the property transfer.

Ariana watched his hands.

“Does this have anything to do with my grandmother?””

Daniel looked at her.

“You must be Ariana.””

She nodded.

“Your grandmother asked that her instructions concerning you be handled carefully. I cannot discuss every detail until the relevant records have been verified, but the trust was intended to provide for your future.””

Ariana's eyes filled.

“Did she leave me the house?””

Daniel considered his answer.

“The documents I have do not establish that the entire house was simply yours. They refer to arrangements intended to protect your interests in connection with the property. Your attorney will need to examine the exact terms.””

Marcus nodded.

“That makes sense.””

Monica suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel, this is a family matter. You shouldn't be discussing confidential documents in front of everyone.””

Daniel closed the folder.

“Then you should have ensured that the relevant documents were handled through the appropriate legal channels.””

Monica recoiled.

Marcus looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel answered before she could.

“The original trust records contain a reference to an amendment made shortly before your mother's death. I was not the person who drafted that amendment, but I was asked to review a related certification. I declined to certify a later document because the supporting records were incomplete.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Who asked you to certify it?””

Daniel glanced at Monica.

She immediately interrupted.

“This is absurd. You're making it sound as though I arranged some elaborate scheme.””

Daniel remained calm.

“I haven't accused anyone of arranging anything. I'm explaining what my records show.””

Olivia approached the table.

“Mr. Whitmore, did Ethan Brooks contact you?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

Olivia's face tightened.

“What did he ask?””

“He requested information about the requirements for transferring property and the documentation needed to support such a transaction.””

“Did you give him the certification?””

“No.””

Olivia sank into the nearest chair.

Marcus leaned forward.

“Did you ever tell him the transfer could proceed without my direct authorization?””

“No.””

“Did you tell him Olivia could become the owner of this house?””

“I told him that any proposed transfer would require appropriate documentation and authorization. I did not promise him a result.””

Monica folded her arms.

“Anyone can say anything now that there's a problem.””

Daniel opened the folder again.

“That's why I brought records rather than relying on recollections.””

He removed a dated letter and placed it in front of Marcus.

The letter referenced a proposed transaction involving the Carter property. A handwritten note in the margin directed the recipient to obtain written confirmation from Marcus before proceeding.

Marcus examined the date.

“This was sent before the property transfer was prepared.””

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“Who received it?””

Daniel pointed to the delivery information.

“Ethan Brooks.””

Olivia covered her face.

Marcus looked toward Monica.

“You knew Ethan was arranging a transfer before I had approved one.””

Monica's eyes filled.

“I knew he was exploring options.””

“Options for what?””

“For Olivia's future!””

“Without asking me?””

“I thought you would agree eventually.””

Marcus placed the letter on the table.

“You don't get to manufacture an agreement and then blame me for refusing to honor it.””

Ariana watched Monica's composure finally break.

“I was afraid,” Monica whispered.

Marcus stared at her.

“Of what?””

“Of what would happen if Olivia didn't have something secure of her own.””

Ariana looked at her stepsister.

“Why did that mean I had to lose my home?””

Monica turned toward her.

“Because your grandmother's trust changed everything. I knew that once the arrangements were understood, Olivia would feel as though she'd been left with nothing.””

“So you decided to give her something that wasn't yours to give?””

Monica began to cry.

“I thought I could fix it before anybody got hurt.””

Ariana glanced at the suitcases.

“You packed my life into bags.””

Monica covered her mouth.

“I know.””

“You let Olivia push me into a wall.””

“I didn't tell her to do that.””

“But you blamed me.””

Monica lowered her eyes.

For once, she offered no defense.

Daniel quietly gathered the documents he had brought.

“Mr. Carter, your attorney should receive copies of these records as soon as possible. I also recommend that the property transfer be examined independently. I can't determine from these papers alone who prepared the disputed signature.””

Marcus nodded.

“That's what we'll do.””

He looked at the original property transfer again.

“Can you tell whether this certification was copied from your records?””

Daniel examined the page.

“The formatting resembles a document I have seen, but I cannot authenticate it from appearance alone. I'll provide my records to your attorney for comparison.””

Marcus thanked him and walked him to the door.

Before Daniel left, he turned back toward Ariana.

“Your grandmother was very specific about one thing. She wanted you to know that her plans for your future were not intended to punish anyone else.””

Ariana swallowed.

“Thank you.””

Daniel nodded and stepped outside.

Marcus closed the door.

For several seconds, the foyer remained silent.

Then Olivia rose from her chair.

“Dad, I need to tell you something about Ethan.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Olivia pulled her phone from her pocket and opened a conversation she had been afraid to show anyone.

“He sent me this last week. I thought it was about the wedding.””

She handed the phone to her father.

The message contained a photograph of a document bearing the heading *CONTINGENCY AGREEMENT*.

Beneath it was a typed clause describing what would happen if the proposed transfer failed.

Marcus read the clause.

Then he looked at Monica.

She had stopped crying.

Because she knew what the next line said.

Marcus turned the phone toward Ariana.

The clause named her as the person who would receive the property's remaining interest if the transfer was invalidated.

But beneath that provision was a handwritten note.

*If Ariana refuses to cooperate, use the alternate declaration.*

Ariana looked up.

“What alternate declaration?””

Olivia's voice shook.

“Ethan told me it was only a backup. He said it would make sure I got the house even if Dad refused to sign.””

Marcus stared at the message.

“Where is it?””

Olivia looked at her mother.

May you like

Monica's face went completely still.

Then she whispered, “It's already been filed.””
