Chapter 8: The Promise Her Grandmother Left Behind

Marcus took Ariana's phone and read the message.

His expression grew distant, not with confusion, but with the unmistakable weight of a memory he had tried to put away.

Ariana watched him carefully.

“Dad?””

He returned the phone.

“Your grandmother and I had an argument that week.””

Monica closed her eyes.

Ariana's voice became smaller.

“About what?””

Marcus glanced at the legal documents.

“About the trust. She wanted to make certain you would have a secure future, regardless of what happened to the house.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I thought the arrangements had been completed, and I didn't want you worrying about money while you were grieving.””

Ariana swallowed.

“What did Monica have to do with it?””

Marcus looked at his wife.

“That depends on what your grandmother told her.””

Monica crossed her arms.

“I was trying to help.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That's not an answer anymore.””

For a moment, the foyer seemed to hold its breath.

Then Ariana's phone vibrated again.

The same unknown number had sent a photograph of a handwritten note.

The writing was unmistakably her grandmother's.

Ariana recognized the slanted capital letters, the small loops, and the way her grandmother always underlined important words twice.

She enlarged the image.

At the top was a date from the final week of her grandmother's life.

Below it, one sentence stood out.

*If Ariana's father ever tells you the trust was settled, ask him who was present when I changed my instructions.*

Ariana looked up.

“Dad, what instructions?””

Marcus stared at the photograph.

“I don't know what this message is referring to.””

Monica took a step toward Ariana.

“Give me the phone.””

Ariana pulled it against her chest.

“Why?””

“Because someone is manipulating you.””

“Then why are you so afraid of what the message says?””

Monica's eyes flashed.

“I am not afraid!””

Her voice echoed through the foyer.

Olivia moved away from her mother.

Marcus extended his hand toward Ariana.

“May I see the photograph again?””

Ariana handed him the phone.

He examined the handwriting and then looked toward the documents on the console.

“Your grandmother kept handwritten notes about her estate. But the actual trust documents would need to be checked against the records held by the people responsible for administering it.””

“Can we contact them?”” Ariana asked.

“Yes.””

Marcus retrieved a card from his briefcase and called the attorney who had handled his mother's estate.

The call went to voicemail.

He left a concise message requesting an urgent conversation about the trust and the newly discovered property agreement.

When he finished, he turned to Monica.

“Were you present when my mother changed her instructions?””

Monica's lips parted.

Olivia stared at her mother.

“Mom?””

Monica walked toward the window at the end of the hallway, then stopped before reaching it.

“I was present for several conversations.””

“That isn't what I asked,” Marcus said.

Monica turned.

“Your mother was very ill. She changed her mind constantly. One day she wanted one thing, and the next day she wanted something else.””

Ariana shook her head.

“Grandma knew what she wanted.””

“You were a child,” Monica replied.

“I was her granddaughter.””

“And I was there when she needed help!””

Marcus's voice sharpened.

“Enough. Did you witness a change to the trust?””

Monica looked at him for a long moment.

Then she said, “I saw papers.””

“Did you sign anything?””

“No.””

“Did you arrange for anyone else to sign anything?””

“No.””

Marcus held her gaze.

“Did you know Ariana was named as a beneficiary?””

Monica's silence answered more than her words had.

Ariana felt tears gather again.

“All this time, you knew Grandma had made arrangements for me?””

Monica turned toward her.

“I knew she wanted you protected.””

“Then why did you act like I was taking something away from Olivia?””

“Because you were going to inherit something that could change the entire family!””

The confession burst from Monica's mouth.

Olivia stared at her.

“You said Ariana wasn't getting anything.””

Monica's face twisted.

“I was trying to keep you from being hurt.””

“By lying to me?””

“By preparing you for reality!””

Olivia shook her head.

“You told me the house would be mine.””

“I told you there would be a future for you.””

“You told me Ariana had no right to stay!””

Monica slapped her palm against the console.

“Because I couldn't let everything fall apart!””

The sudden movement knocked the cracked family photograph onto its side.

Marcus caught it before it slid to the floor.

He carefully set it upright.

Then he looked at Monica with an expression Ariana had never seen before.

“Did my mother leave instructions that you disagreed with?””

Monica's face went pale.

“I disagreed with how she handled things.””

“Why?””

“Because she didn't understand what this family needed.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She was my mother. She understood more than you think.””

Monica's eyes filled, but she didn't cry.

“She believed Ariana should always come first.””

Ariana stared at her.

“Grandma never said Olivia didn't matter.””

“No,” Monica whispered.

“She just made sure you would never have to depend on anyone else.””

The words hung between them.

Marcus slowly sat down.

He looked older than he had an hour earlier.

“My mother told me she wanted Ariana to have choices,” he said.

“She wanted her to finish school, build a life, and never feel trapped because she couldn't afford to leave a bad situation.””

Ariana wiped her cheeks.

“That sounds like Grandma.””

Marcus nodded.

“She told me that love should never be used as a reason to control somebody.””

Monica looked away.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

The caller ID showed his mother's former estate attorney.

He answered immediately.

“Thank you for calling back.””

The attorney spoke for nearly a minute while Marcus listened. Ariana watched her father's face, searching for clues.

Finally, Marcus said, “Are you certain?””

Another pause.

“Can you confirm who signed the latest amendment?””

Monica gripped the staircase railing.

Marcus glanced at her.

“Please send me the certified copy through the proper channel. My current attorney will review it with you.””

He ended the call.

Ariana stood.

“What did he say?””

Marcus placed the phone on the console.

“He confirmed that your grandmother's trust records contain an amendment made shortly before her death.””

“Was I named in it?””

“Yes.””

Ariana covered her mouth.

“Then why didn't I know?””

“Because the amendment wasn't handled the way I expected. The attorney says we need to examine the records to understand what happened afterward.””

Monica whispered, “Marcus, please.””

He turned to her.

“Did you know about the amendment?””

Monica's shoulders sagged.

“Yes.””

Olivia stepped forward.

“Mom, what did you do?””

Monica looked at her daughter, then at Ariana.

“I didn't change your grandmother's instructions,” she said.

“But I knew someone wanted them changed.””

Marcus rose slowly.

“Who?””

Monica opened her mouth.

The doorbell rang again.

This time, no one moved.

Then a man's voice called from the porch.

“Mr. Carter? My name is Daniel Whitmore. Your attorney asked me to bring the original certification records.””

Marcus looked at the documents on the console.

Monica's face drained of color.

And from beside the staircase, Olivia whispered, “That's the man Ethan told me never to contact.””
