Chapter 4: The Secret Olivia Almost Revealed

“Mom... you said he would never find out about the second document.””

Olivia's whisper was barely audible, but in the silent foyer, every word landed like a slap.

Monica spun toward her daughter.

“Go upstairs. Now.””

Olivia didn't move.

Marcus slowly lowered his phone.

“What second document?””

Monica stepped between him and Olivia, smoothing the front of her blouse with trembling fingers.

“She is confused. She's eighteen, Marcus. She hears pieces of conversations and invents stories around them.””

Olivia stared at her mother.

“You told me—”

“Not another word.””

“Monica,” Marcus interrupted, “you have spent the last ten minutes telling me this is a misunderstanding. Now your daughter has mentioned another document, and you want her to disappear upstairs. Explain that.””

Monica lifted her chin.

“I will not be interrogated in my own home.””

Marcus glanced at the suitcases beside the front door.

“Your own home?””

The question struck harder than a shout.

Monica's cheeks flushed.

“You know what I meant.””

“I honestly don't know what you mean anymore.””

Ariana stood beside her father, her shoulder still aching from the shove. Her grandmother's photograph rested on the console, its cracked glass catching the bright afternoon sunlight.

She looked at Olivia.

“What second document?””

Olivia's eyes filled with tears, but she kept glancing at Monica as though asking permission to speak.

Ariana stepped closer.

“Olivia, you told me I was leaving today. You had my key. You watched Mom blame me for something you did. If there's a reason for all this, tell us.””

Olivia swallowed.

“Mom said the first document was enough to get you out.””

Marcus's face hardened.

“Enough to get her out of a house that belongs to me?””

Olivia shook her head.

“I don't know all the legal stuff.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

Monica grabbed Olivia's elbow.

“That's enough.””

Olivia pulled free.

“No! You said this would be easy. You said Ariana would leave, Dad would eventually accept it, and nobody would have to know what happened before the wedding.””

Marcus went perfectly still.

“What wedding?””

Olivia covered her mouth.

Monica stared at her daughter with undisguised fury.

“You have just made a terrible mistake.””

Ariana felt her stomach tighten.

“Whose wedding?””

Neither woman answered.

Marcus picked up the property transfer again.

“Monica, I am asking you one last time. What does a wedding have to do with transferring my house?””

Monica drew a long breath.

“Olivia has been seeing someone seriously. We were discussing her future.””

“Then buy her a house with your own money.””

“That's not the point!””

“Then what is the point?””

Monica's voice cracked.

“The point is that you have always made Ariana the center of everything. Her grief. Her education.

Her feelings. Every decision has to be made around what she wants.””

Ariana stared at her.

“I never asked you to give me anything.””

“You never had to ask,” Monica snapped.

“Your father always volunteered.””

Marcus took a step toward his wife.

“Because she's my daughter.””

“And Olivia is yours too!””

“Then why did she need Ariana's bedroom key?””

Monica's mouth closed.

Olivia lowered her eyes.

For several seconds, the only sound was the quiet hum of the air-conditioning.

Then Marcus turned to Ariana.

“Sweetheart, take a seat by the staircase. Don't touch anything else in those bags.””

“Dad, I'm not leaving.””

“I know. I want you somewhere comfortable while I make a few calls.””

Ariana nodded, though her fingers were trembling.

Marcus moved to the console and called his attorney. He put the phone on speaker.

A man's voice answered after two rings.

“Marcus, I'm glad you called.””

“This is about the property transfer you emailed me.””

“Have you seen the entire packet?””

“I have the transfer document. My wife and daughter appear to know something about another document.””

There was a pause.

“Then we need to be careful about what you sign or agree to. Don't authorize any changes until I review everything.””

“I haven't signed anything.””

“I understand. The document you sent me has several issues that need to be examined. I cannot tell you whether the signature is forged without a proper review, but the filing deserves immediate attention.””

Marcus glanced at Monica.

“Who is Daniel Whitmore?””

Another pause.

“Daniel Whitmore is the name listed as the certifying professional on the copy you forwarded. I'm checking the details now. Don't contact him directly until I've confirmed his role.””

Monica closed her eyes.

Marcus noticed.

“Do you know him?”” he asked her.

She remained silent.

His attorney continued, “Marcus, there's something else. The property paperwork references an accompanying agreement. I haven't received that agreement yet.””

“What does it say?””

“I can't determine that without seeing it. But the transfer appears to rely on terms outside the pages you have.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Where do I get this agreement?””

“The person who prepared or submitted the packet should have a copy. I'll request the official records as well.””

Marcus ended the call after arranging to meet his attorney the following morning.

When he turned around, Monica was already reaching for the brown envelope.

He caught her wrist.

“Don't.””

“I only want to organize the papers.””

“You've done enough organizing for one day.””

Monica pulled away.

“You cannot speak to me like I'm a criminal.””

“Then stop behaving like someone who's afraid of a document.””

Ariana watched her stepmother's composure crumble. Monica had entered the foyer looking untouchable. Now she seemed unable to decide whether to shout, cry, or run.

Olivia moved toward the staircase.

Marcus stopped her with a question.

“Where is the second document?””

Olivia froze.

“I don't have it.””

“Who does?””

She looked at Monica.

Monica's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Olivia, if you say another word, you will regret it.””

Olivia's face twisted with hurt.

“You said you were doing this for me.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Doing what for you?””

Olivia looked at her father, tears finally spilling over.

“Mom said if Ariana left today, everything would be settled before the wedding. She said the second document would make sure nobody could take the house away from me.””

Marcus stared at his wife.

Monica's lips trembled.

Then Olivia said something that made Ariana rise from her seat.

“Dad, the second document isn't in the house.””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“Where is it?””

May you like

Olivia looked toward the front door.

“It's with the man who's supposed to marry me.””
