Chapter 2: The Papers in the Suitcase

Marcus closed the front door behind him.

The soft click echoed through the foyer.

Nobody answered his question.

He set his briefcase beside the staircase and looked at the three suitcases lined up near the entrance. One was open just enough to reveal Ariana's folded jeans, a sweatshirt, and the corner of a familiar family photograph.

Marcus walked toward them.

“Monica, I asked you something.””

Monica recovered first.

“Marcus, please don't jump to conclusions. Ariana has been having difficulties adjusting to some changes in the household.””

Ariana pushed herself away from the wall.

“Dad, I didn't agree to move.””

Marcus turned to her.

“Move where?””

“I don't know. She won't tell me.””

Monica folded her arms.

“She is nineteen. We've discussed the fact that she needs to become more independent.””

“When did we discuss that?”” Marcus asked.

“Several times.””

Ariana shook her head.

“That never happened.””

Olivia stepped forward, still holding the bedroom key.

“Dad, Ariana has been disrespectful to Mom for months. We were only trying to make things easier for everybody.””

Marcus looked at the key.

“Why do you have Ariana's bedroom key?””

Olivia's fingers closed around it.

“I needed to organize her room.””

“Without asking her?””

Olivia glanced at Monica.

“Mom said it was fine.””

Marcus looked at his wife.

“Did you tell Olivia to pack Ariana's belongings?””

Monica lifted her chin.

“I made a practical decision. You work constantly, Marcus. Somebody has to keep this household running.””

“Answer the question.””

The sharpness in his voice silenced her.

Ariana watched her father carefully. She had seen him angry before, but he rarely raised his voice. When Marcus became quiet, it usually meant he was paying attention to something everyone else had overlooked.

Monica adjusted the leather folder beneath her arm.

“I was trying to prevent another argument.””

“An argument that apparently ended with my daughter against a wall.””

Olivia immediately protested.

“She pushed me first!””

Ariana stared at her.

“You shoved me!””

“Enough,” Marcus said.

Both girls fell silent.

Marcus approached Ariana.

“Are you hurt?””

“My shoulder hurts a little.”” Ariana swallowed hard.

“But that's not the point, Dad. They packed everything. Even Grandma's picture.””

His gaze followed hers to the photograph wedged between the suitcases.

He carefully removed it.

The glass had a thin crack across one corner.

Marcus ran his thumb along the frame.

“Your grandmother gave you this.””

“I know.””

“Why was it packed like this?””

Ariana's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know, Dad. I came home, and Olivia told me I was leaving.””

Marcus looked at Monica again.

“Open the suitcase.””

Monica stiffened.

“Marcus, there's no reason to make a scene.””

“I didn't ask whether there was a reason. Open it.””

Olivia moved toward the luggage.

“I can explain what's inside.””

Marcus stepped between her and the suitcase.

“Then you won't mind if I look.””

He crouched beside the largest bag and lifted the lid.

Clothes filled the bottom. A pair of sneakers rested against one side, and a toiletry bag had been pushed into the corner. On top sat a thick brown envelope secured with a metal clasp.

Marcus stopped moving.

“What is this?””

Monica's lips parted, but no answer came.

Ariana moved closer.

“I've never seen that envelope before.””

Marcus removed it and placed it on the console table beneath the staircase. When he opened the clasp, several official-looking documents slid against one another.

The top page bore a bold heading.

*PROPERTY TRANSFER.*

He read the first paragraph silently.

Then he read it again.

Ariana watched his expression change.

“Dad?””

Marcus lifted the page closer to his face.

“What the hell is this?””

Monica reached toward the papers.

“Marcus, let me explain.””

He moved the document beyond her reach.

“Don't touch it.””

Olivia's smug expression vanished. The key hung motionless in her hand.

Marcus turned to the second page.

There were property details, legal descriptions, and a section identifying the person who would receive ownership.

He read the name.

Then he looked directly at Olivia.

“Olivia Carter?””

Olivia's mouth opened.

“Dad, I—”

“Why is your name on a property transfer for this house?””

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Marcus placed the document flat on the console.

“You're telling me you don't know why your name appears on legal paperwork inside a suitcase full of your stepsister's belongings?””

Monica stepped forward, her voice suddenly softer.

“Marcus, you're misunderstanding what you're looking at.””

“Then help me understand.””

She glanced toward Ariana.

“This isn't something we should discuss in front of her.””

Ariana recoiled as if Monica had slapped her.

“I'm standing right here!””

Marcus didn't look away from his wife.

“You packed my daughter out of this house, and now you're telling me the paperwork explaining why should be discussed without her?””

“I was protecting the family,” Monica said.

“From what?””

Monica said nothing.

Marcus turned the page over.

Near the bottom was a signature line.

His full name appeared in dark ink.

Marcus Carter.

The signature was confident, sweeping across the line with the same distinctive curve he used on business contracts.

For several seconds, the foyer remained perfectly still.

Then Marcus picked up the page with both hands.

Ariana stepped closer.

“Dad, what does it mean?””

Marcus stared at the signature.

His fingers began to tremble.

“It means somebody is claiming I transferred this property.””

“To Olivia?”” Ariana whispered.

Marcus nodded once.

Olivia backed toward the staircase.

Monica reached for his arm.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

He pulled away.

“I never signed this.””

Ariana's tears slipped down her cheeks.

Marcus raised his eyes toward Monica, and the calm authority in his face gave way to something colder.

“Then why does it have my signature?””

Monica opened her mouth.

No words came out.

Marcus looked at the final page, where a date and a second line of legal certification had been entered.

His expression hardened.

Because the document contained something else he hadn't noticed.

A detail that suggested this wasn't simply a plan to force Ariana out.

It was a claim that could change who owned the house.

And beneath the signature that Marcus swore he had never written was the name of the person who had certified the transfer.

He read it aloud.

“Who is Daniel Whitmore?””

Monica went completely pale.
