Chapter 12: The Person She Trusted Most
The name was there.
Written clearly.
Impossible to misunderstand.
I read it once.
Then again.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
*Marcus Carter.*
My father.
The person my mother trusted most.
The person who raised me.
The person who sat beside me when I cried.
The person who told me facts don’t lie.
Nobody moved.
Not even Marcus.
His face had gone completely blank.
Not angry.
Not shocked.
Empty.
Like someone had reached inside him and pulled out every emotion at once.
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
His eyes finally moved toward me.
And what I saw scared me.
Pain.
Not guilt.
Pain.
“I can explain.””
The sentence hurt.
Because it sounded exactly like every person who had been caught hiding something.
I stepped back.
“No.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Jordan.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You knew?””
“I knew about the authorization.””
The words landed like a punch.
Everyone reacted.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Darius stared.
“You knew?””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“But not what it meant.””
Darius stepped closer.
“Explain.””
Marcus looked at the paper.
“Your mother created that authorization before she died.””
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“She wanted one person who could access everything if something happened.””
I looked at him.
“And she chose you.””
“Yes.””
“Then why does she say not to trust you?””
That question broke something in him.
Marcus looked down.
“I don’t know.””
The silence was unbearable.
I wanted to believe him.
I wanted to.
But every person I trusted had a secret.
Every person who said they were protecting me had hidden something.
Darius picked up the document.
“There’s something else.””
Nobody looked away.
He pointed to the handwriting.
“The note wasn’t written next to Marcus’s name.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Darius turned the paper.
“The warning was written separately.””
He showed us.
The note:
*The only person I never suspected.*
Then underneath:
*Until I found the second account.*
My heart raced.
“Second account?””
Marcus looked confused.
“My mother found another account?””
Darius nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“Stop.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her face was full of fear.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
Marcus turned.
“What do you know?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I know this was never about Jordan’s education money.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then what was it about?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“Your mother discovered something.””
“What?””
“She discovered where the money was really coming from.””
Darius frowned.
“Explain.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You’re going to explain.””
For a moment, she looked like she might refuse.
Then her eyes moved toward the window.
Toward the city.
Toward whoever might be watching.
And she whispered:
“The money in Jordan’s account wasn’t the money everyone thought it was.””
Nobody spoke.
I felt numb.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“It means your mother wasn’t protecting money.””
She swallowed.
“She was protecting you from the person who put it there.””
The room went silent.
Marcus stared.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at the door.
And then came the sound.
A knock.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone froze.
Nobody moved.
Because the person outside wasn’t knocking like a stranger.
They were knocking like someone who belonged there.
Marcus walked toward the door.
Darius grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.””
Another knock.
Louder.
Then a voice from the other side.
A voice I had never heard before.
But one that made Vanessa collapse onto the sofa.
Because she recognized it.
“Marcus.””
A pause.
“Open the door.””
My father looked back at us.
May you like
The voice continued.
“I think it’s time Jordan knows who his real family is.””
