Chapter 9: The Door Left Open
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Three seconds where my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
The documents were still there.
The bank statements were still there.
The photograph was still there.
But the metal box that held my mother’s evidence was gone.
Marcus reacted first.
He rushed toward the hallway.
The apartment door was open.
A cold breeze moved through the living room.
Nobody had noticed it.
Nobody had heard it.
Someone had walked in.
Someone had taken exactly what they wanted.
“Lock the door,” Marcus said.
Darius was already moving.
“I’ll check the hall.””
My father grabbed his arm.
“No.””
Darius looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if someone got in here without us noticing, they wanted us to chase them.””
The words made everyone stop.
Marcus looked around the room.
Not like a father.
Like someone searching for danger.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You knew Robert had a son.””
“I knew he had a son.””
“Who?””
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus’s voice became harder.
“Who?””
She whispered:
“Ethan.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way everyone reacted meant everything.
Darius stepped back.
“Ethan?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He blamed you.””
Marcus stared at her.
“For what?””
She hesitated.
“For Robert’s death.””
The room became silent.
I looked at my father.
“What happened?””
Marcus looked broken.
“Robert died in an accident.””
Darius shook his head.
“Ethan never believed that.””
Vanessa sat down.
Her confidence was gone.
“I should have told you.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Yes.””
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“I understand perfectly.””
I looked at the documents.
At the empty space where the box had been.
At the letter from my mother.
Everything connected back to one question.
Who betrayed her?
And now another question appeared.
Who was willing to break into our home to hide the answer?
I picked up the photograph.
Robert.
Vanessa.
My parents.
A perfect family moment.
Except someone in that picture had become the reason everything fell apart.
“Dad.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Did Mom trust Robert?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Yes.””
“Did you?””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“And Ethan thinks you killed him?””
Marcus looked away.
“I think Ethan thinks I caused it.””
The honesty hurt.
Because I realized something.
My father wasn’t hiding because he was guilty.
He was hiding because he was afraid.
But afraid of what?
Darius picked up one of the remaining papers.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
He held up a document.
“The box is gone.””
He pointed.
“But this was underneath it.””
A single page.
Something my mother had hidden separately.
My hands shook as I took it.
At the top was a title.
*Final Access Record.*
Below it were names.
People connected to the account.
People who had permission.
People who could move money.
My eyes moved down the page.
Vanessa.
Darius.
Marcus.
Then one final name.
A name I had never expected.
A name that made my father sit down.
Because beside it was my mother’s handwritten note:
*If this person ever appears again, do not trust them.*
I stared.
“Who is it?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus looked at the name like he was seeing a ghost.
Then he whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
I looked closer.
The name was clear.
And suddenly I understood why everyone had been afraid.
Because the person who had access to my future…
May you like
The person who helped take my money…
Was someone who was supposed to be gone forever.
