Chapter 14: The Family I Never Knew
The room disappeared.
Not literally.
But that was what it felt like.
The voices.
The city outside.
The movement around me.
Everything faded.
Because one sentence had changed my entire life.
Marcus isn’t the only person who has the right to call himself your father.
I looked at my father.
The man who taught me to ride a bike.
The man who stayed up when I was sick.
The man who held my hand at my mother’s funeral.
The man I called Dad.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
My voice broke.
Marcus didn’t answer.
And that was worse.
“Dad.””
He closed his eyes.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
My chest tightened.
“Find out what?””
Nobody moved.
Then Marcus said:
“I’m your father.””
I felt a tiny bit of relief.
Until he continued.
“But not by blood.””
The relief disappeared.
I stepped backward.
“No.””
Marcus moved toward me.
“Jordan—”
“No.””
My eyes burned.
“No, you don’t get to say that like it’s nothing.””
“It’s not nothing.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
He stopped.
Because he had no answer.
Adrian spoke quietly.
“Because your mother asked him not to.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“She wanted Jordan protected.””
“Protected from what?””
Adrian looked at me.
“From the person who would use your identity to control everything.””
I shook my head.
“This makes no sense.””
Darius picked up the documents.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
He pointed at the access records.
“The account.””
“What about it?”” Marcus asked.
Darius looked at me.
“Jordan’s name was never the only thing protected.””
He pointed to another section.
“Your mother created a trust connected to your biological inheritance.””
My stomach dropped.
“Inheritance?””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
“From who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian said:
“Your biological father.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Marcus.
Then at Adrian.
“Who is he?””
Adrian’s expression changed.
Like he knew this answer would hurt.
“He was my brother.””
I froze.
“Your brother?””
Adrian nodded.
“Elias Cole.””
The name meant nothing.
But the reaction did.
Marcus looked devastated.
Darius looked shocked.
Vanessa looked like she had seen a ghost.
“Elias died before I was born,” I whispered.
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
My voice became quieter.
“Then how?””
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“Because Marcus chose to raise you after Elias died.””
I looked at my father.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“I knew everything.””
The pain in his face almost made me angry.
Almost.
Because I wanted to understand.
But understanding didn’t erase years of silence.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Marcus’s eyes filled.
“Because I watched your mother lose everything trying to protect you.””
He swallowed.
“I watched people around us chase money, power, and secrets.””
“And you thought lying was protection?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I thought giving you a normal childhood was protection.””
I looked down.
For years, I thought my life was simple.
Now I had three families.
Three last names.
Three versions of the truth.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“I didn’t know.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked at me.
“I swear.””
I almost laughed.
The woman who stole from me wanted me to believe her.
But then I saw her face.
She wasn’t pretending.
“Why did you take the money?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Adrian’s people threatened me.””
Adrian looked angry.
“My people?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You know exactly who.””
The room changed.
Marcus noticed.
“Who threatened you?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“The same person who has been controlling everything.””
A notification sound came from Adrian’s phone.
He looked down.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
Darius asked.
Adrian turned the screen around.
A message.
Only one sentence.
*They know you found the final file.*
My heart raced.
“What final file?””
Adrian looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
“The one your mother died trying to protect.””
Marcus went completely still.
Because he understood.
“What file?””
Adrian looked toward the hidden documents.
“The one that proves who betrayed her.””
A second message appeared.
This time with a photo.
All of us froze.
It was a picture of our living room.
Taken minutes ago.
Everyone inside.
Everyone visible.
And in the reflection of the window…
Someone was standing outside.
Watching.
May you like
Adrian whispered:
“He’s here.””
