Chapter 3: The Second Signature
The sentence stayed in the room like smoke.
You really don’t want to know.
Those words followed me long after everyone stopped talking.
Because I did want to know.
I needed to know.
The truth was already painful.
But not knowing felt worse.
That night, I sat on the edge of my bed staring at the city lights outside my window.
My room was bigger than most people’s entire apartments.
I had expensive furniture.
A perfect view.
Everything someone might look at and think:
He has everything.
But none of it mattered.
Because the person I trusted most had taken something from me.
And she wasn’t even the only one.
My father knocked softly before entering.
“Hey.””
I looked up.
He sat beside me.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then he said:
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“It’s not your fault.””
His eyes dropped.
“I should have protected that account better.””
I looked at him.
“You trusted family.””
He nodded.
“Sometimes that’s the hardest mistake to admit.””
The next morning, Marcus called everyone back into the living room.
The same room.
The same white sofa.
The same skyline.
But everything felt different.
Vanessa sat stiffly.
Brielle sat beside her, looking exhausted.
I stood next to my father.
Marcus placed the bank statement on the table.
“I spent the night reviewing every document.””
Vanessa looked nervous.
“You had no right—”
“I had every right.””
He placed another paper beside it.
“The account had restrictions.””
My eyes moved to the document.
“What kind?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Your mother and I created safeguards when we opened it.””
I swallowed.
“My mom?””
He nodded.
“She wanted to make sure nobody could touch it without approval.””
That made my chest hurt.
Even years after she was gone, she was still protecting me.
Marcus continued.
“The bank confirmed the withdrawal.””
He tapped the paper.
“It needed two signatures.””
Vanessa looked away.
“And one of those signatures was yours.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who was the second?””
Silence.
Brielle wiped a tear from her cheek.
“Mom…”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
For a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.
Then she opened her eyes.
“I was trying to fix something.””
Marcus frowned.
“By stealing from a child?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“By protecting my family.””
I felt angry.
“You keep saying family.””
I stepped forward.
“But you never protected me.””
Vanessa looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something that almost looked like regret.
Almost.
Then the apartment door opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stepped inside.
Not a stranger.
Someone who knew exactly where he was going.
Someone who didn’t look surprised to see the papers on the table.
Marcus immediately stood.
“What are you doing here?””
The man didn’t answer.
His eyes moved toward the bank statement.
Then toward Vanessa.
Then toward me.
My father’s expression hardened.
Because he recognized him.
I had never seen that look before.
Fear mixed with anger.
“Marcus,” the man said quietly.
“I think it’s time Jordan knows the truth.””
My heart stopped.
Marcus stepped in front of me.
“No.””
The man reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder.
Vanessa looked terrified.
Brielle whispered:
“Dad…”
I froze.
Dad?
I looked at the man.
Then at Marcus.
And suddenly, the missing second signature wasn’t the only secret in the room.
May you like
Because the man holding the folder looked at me and said:
“Jordan, your father has been hiding something from you too.””
