Chapter 8: The Photograph That Changed Everything

The photo was taken seconds ago.

I knew because the box was still open in front of me.

My hand was still holding my mother’s note.

The angle was from outside the apartment.

Someone had been close enough to see everything.

Close enough to watch us.

My stomach dropped.

“Someone is outside.””

Marcus immediately grabbed the phone from my hand.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I pointed toward the window.

The city stretched below us.

Hundreds of buildings.

Thousands of windows.

Too many places to hide.

Marcus looked at Darius.

“Did you tell anyone?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

Darius’s eyes hardened.

“Yes.””

Vanessa suddenly looked nervous.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Nervous.

And I noticed.

“You know something.””

She looked at me.

“No.””

“You do.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Vanessa.””

She swallowed.

“I don’t know who took the picture.””

“But?””

She said nothing.

That was enough.

I stepped closer.

“But you know who could.””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Marcus.

“He was supposed to handle it.””

The room went quiet.

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Who was supposed to handle what?””

Her hands started shaking.

“I didn’t want things to go this far.””

Darius laughed bitterly.

“You always say that after.””

Marcus moved closer.

“After what?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“After everything gets destroyed.””

The words didn’t make sense.

Until they did.

She wasn’t talking about the money anymore.

She was talking about the secret.

The entire secret.

My father looked at her.

“You’re afraid of someone.””

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

That scared me.

Marcus had faced angry strangers.

Business problems.

Difficult situations.

But this was different.

This was someone close.

Someone who knew where every weakness was.

Darius opened the metal box again.

“We need to look at what your mother collected.””

Marcus nodded.

We spread the documents across the coffee table.

Bank transfers.

Account records.

Copies of emails.

Then I found something.

A photograph.

It was old.

My mother.

Marcus.

Vanessa.

And another person.

A man standing beside them.

My hands froze.

Because I recognized him.

Not personally.

But from somewhere.

“Who is that?””

Marcus looked at the photo.

His face changed.

Darius noticed.

“You know him.””

Marcus slowly took the picture.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

I stared at him.

“Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

“That’s Robert.””

“Who is Robert?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“He was Marcus’s closest friend.””

The room became silent.

My father looked at her.

“Don’t.””

But she continued.

“He handled the finances for years.””

My chest tightened.

The missing piece moved closer.

Someone with access.

Someone trusted.

Someone who knew the accounts.

Darius picked up the bank records.

“Look.””

He pointed.

The transfer approvals.

The signatures.

The dates.

Then he found something.

A pattern.

“These withdrawals happened after Robert left the company.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Robert died two years ago.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at the documents.

Then at the signature.

The signature that helped steal my future.

Darius slowly placed the paper down.

“Then someone is using his identity.””

My skin went cold.

Someone dead.

Someone gone.

Someone who couldn’t defend himself.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“I need to leave.””

Marcus blocked her.

“No.””

“I have to.””

“You’re not going anywhere.””

Her eyes became desperate.

“You don’t understand what happens if he finds out.””

My father stared at her.

“If who finds out?””

Vanessa looked toward the window.

And whispered:

“Robert’s son.””

I froze.

Darius looked shocked.

Marcus looked confused.

“Robert didn’t have a son.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Yes.””

Her voice trembled.

“You just didn’t know.””

Nobody moved.

Then the apartment lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The room went dark for a second.

May you like

When the lights came back on…

The metal box was gone.
