Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Signature

I didn’t know what scared me more.

The fact that Vanessa stole from me.

Or the fact that my father had secrets of his own.

The man standing in our living room held a folder against his chest like it contained something powerful enough to destroy everything we believed.

Marcus stood between us.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Afraid.

And I had never seen my father afraid before.

“Jordan,” Marcus said quietly, “go to your room.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Now.””

The command was familiar.

But the fear behind it wasn’t.

I looked at the man.

He looked back at me.

There was something strange in his eyes.

Not hatred.

Not guilt.

Something worse.

Recognition.

Like he had known me for years.

“I think he deserves the truth,” the man said.

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

The man laughed softly.

“After all this time, you still think you can control the story?””

Vanessa stood suddenly.

“Enough.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked at the man.

“You weren’t supposed to come here.””

That sentence made my stomach drop.

Because it meant she knew him.

Not just knew him.

Expected him.

Brielle looked at her mother.

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

The man slowly placed the folder on the table.

“My name is Darius Carter.””

My heart stopped.

Carter.

Same last name.

Same as mine.

I looked at Marcus.

He didn’t deny it.

That scared me more.

“Dad?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Jordan…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t do that.””

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

“You always tell me facts don’t lie.””

My voice shook.

“So tell me the fact.””

Marcus closed his eyes for a second.

Darius opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Old records.

Things that looked like pieces of a life I had never known existed.

“I’m your uncle,” Darius said.

Nobody moved.

The word echoed.

Uncle.

I looked at Marcus.

“Is that true?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

That pause hurt more than anything.

“Dad.””

Marcus finally nodded.

“Yes.””

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“How long?””

His eyes softened.

“Your whole life.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because my brain didn’t know what else to do.

“My whole life?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Jordan, listen to me.””

“No.””

I held up my hand.

“No, you listen.””

My voice cracked.

“I found out Vanessa stole my future yesterday.””

I pointed at Darius.

“And now I find out you’ve been hiding an entire person from me?””

Nobody spoke.

Darius looked down.

For the first time, he looked less like someone causing damage.

And more like someone carrying it.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.””

I looked at him.

“You walked into my house and told me my father lied to me.””

“I walked in because your father refused to tell you.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“That’s enough.””

Darius pulled a document from the folder.

“The second signature on the education account wasn’t Vanessa.””

Vanessa froze.

Brielle looked confused.

“What?””

Darius placed the paper on the table.

“It was me.””

The room exploded into silence.

My eyes moved to the document.

Two names.

Two signatures.

Vanessa’s.

Darius’s.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You said you were helping your family.””

She looked away.

“I was.””

“No.””

My voice became colder.

“You were helping yourself.””

Darius shook his head.

“She didn’t act alone.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Careful.””

Darius met his eyes.

“You know I’m right.””

I looked between them.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was the moment I realized something.

The stolen money wasn’t the biggest secret.

It was only the door.

Darius picked up another paper.

“The withdrawals weren’t for Brielle’s vacation.””

Brielle looked up.

“Then what were they for?””

Nobody answered.

Darius looked directly at Marcus.

“Tell him.””

Marcus remained silent.

My chest tightened.

“Tell me what?””

Darius slowly turned the document around.

“The money wasn’t transferred to Brielle.””

I stepped closer.

“Then where did it go?””

Darius looked at Vanessa.

Then at Marcus.

Then back at me.

May you like

And said:

“Your mother’s old account.””
