Chapter 13: The Truth Behind the Door
Nobody wanted Marcus to open the door.
That was the first thing I understood.
Not because we didn’t want to know who was standing outside.
Because everyone in that room already knew.
The person behind that door wasn’t bringing answers.
They were bringing consequences.
Marcus stood there with his hand inches away from the handle.
The city lights reflected across the glass windows behind him.
Everything looked exactly the same.
The white sofa.
The marble floor.
The expensive apartment.
The place where I thought my family was safe.
But safety had become the biggest lie of all.
“Dad,” I whispered.
He looked back at me.
For a second, he wasn’t the powerful man everyone else saw.
He was just my father.
A man who looked terrified of losing his son.
“Stay behind me.””
The words were automatic.
The same words he had said when I was little.
The same words he said whenever something scared him.
But this time, I noticed something.
He wasn’t protecting me from danger.
He was protecting me from the truth.
The knock came again.
Three times.
Slow.
Confident.
Like whoever was outside knew nobody would leave.
Marcus opened the door.
And the man standing there made Vanessa cover her mouth.
Because she knew him.
Darius knew him.
Even Marcus knew him.
I didn’t.
Not until he spoke.
“Hello, Jordan.””
My body went still.
He was older.
Late fifties maybe.
Gray hair.
Calm eyes.
A face that looked familiar in a way I couldn’t explain.
Like I had seen pieces of him in old photographs.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
The man looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
“My name is Adrian.””
Nobody spoke.
Darius stepped forward.
“Adrian Cole.””
The man nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“What are you doing here?””
Adrian smiled slightly.
“Finishing what should have been finished years ago.””
Vanessa stood.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Neither should you.””
That sentence changed the room.
Vanessa looked away.
And suddenly I realized something.
She wasn’t afraid of him.
She was afraid of what he could reveal.
Marcus stepped between us.
“Leave.””
Adrian didn’t move.
“You still think you can hide behind anger.””
“You threatened my son.””
Adrian looked at me.
“I warned him.””
“About what?””
Adrian reached into his coat.
Marcus immediately reacted.
“Don’t.””
But Adrian only pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Worn.
Familiar.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized the handwriting.
My mother’s handwriting.
“Where did you get that?””
Marcus’s voice was barely a whisper.
Adrian looked at him.
“She gave it to me.””
Nobody moved.
My mother.
Again.
Another secret.
Another person she trusted.
I stepped forward.
“She knew you?””
Adrian nodded.
“She trusted me.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Your mother trusted everyone.””
Adrian looked at her.
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“She trusted carefully.””
The room went silent.
He handed me the envelope.
I didn’t take it immediately.
Because I was tired.
Tired of opening things that destroyed my understanding of my own life.
But I reached for it anyway.
Inside was a letter.
Short.
Only a few paragraphs.
The first line made my hands shake.
*Jordan, if Adrian is standing in front of you, then Marcus has finally learned what I was trying to show him.*
I looked at my father.
He looked away.
I continued reading.
*The money in your education account was never stolen from me. It was placed there by someone who wanted control over our family.*
My eyes moved faster.
*I discovered that someone was using my name, Marcus’s name, and our family’s trust to hide something much bigger.*
I stopped.
Something bigger.
*The person who started this was not Vanessa. Vanessa was only a piece of it.*
Everyone looked at her.
She lowered her head.
*The person responsible was someone who knew our family before Jordan was born. Someone who understood how to manipulate every relationship around us.*
My hands tightened around the paper.
Then I reached the final sentence.
And everything changed.
*Adrian knows the truth about Jordan’s birth. Ask him why Marcus never told you.*
I looked up slowly.
Everyone was watching Marcus.
Especially Adrian.
My father looked like he had been waiting for this moment for years.
“Birth?””
My voice barely came out.
“Why would my birth matter?””
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian spoke.
“Because Jordan…”
May you like
He paused.
“Marcus isn’t the only person who has the right to call himself your father.””
