Chapter 5: The Secret My Mother Left Behind
The room went silent after Darius said her name.
Not Vanessa.
Not Brielle.
My mother.
The one person who wasn’t there to explain anything.
The one person everyone seemed to be protecting and hiding behind at the same time.
“My mother’s account?”” I whispered.
Marcus looked away.
And that was enough.
I already knew.
There was something.
Something he didn’t want me to see.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“I need you to tell me the truth.””
His face changed.
Not like Vanessa’s.
Not like someone caught.
Like someone who had been holding a broken piece of glass for years.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone says that when they’re hiding something.””
Darius slowly nodded.
“He’s right.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You don’t know what I was protecting him from.””
Darius stepped closer.
“I know exactly what you were protecting him from.””
Brielle looked between them.
“Can someone explain what’s happening?””
Nobody answered her.
I picked up the document from the table.
The page showed transfers.
Money moving.
Accounts connected.
But there was one name that kept appearing.
My mother’s.
I had spent years believing my mother left us because she got sick.
Because life was unfair.
Because sometimes good people disappear too soon.
But now everyone was looking at her name like it was a secret.
“What does this mean?””
Marcus sat down slowly.
For the first time, he looked older.
“I should have told you.””
I waited.
He took a deep breath.
“Your mother had a trust.””
I frowned.
“A trust?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
His eyes met mine.
“For you.””
I stared at him.
“She left money for me?””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
Marcus hesitated.
That hesitation bothered me.
“How much?””
“Enough to secure your education.””
My hands tightened.
“So the money Vanessa took…”
“Was connected to that trust.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face was pale.
“You knew?””
She didn’t answer.
“Did you know about my mother’s money?””
Her silence was an answer.
Brielle whispered:
“Mom…”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Don’t.””
“No.””
Brielle shook her head.
“You lied to him.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“I know you took money from a kid.””
The words hit hard.
Because Brielle wasn’t defending herself anymore.
She was defending me.
Vanessa stood.
“You think you’re better than me now?””
Brielle flinched.
“You always do this.””
“Do what?””
“Make everyone feel guilty until they forget what you did.””
The room became still.
I watched Vanessa.
And suddenly I understood something.
She wasn’t just controlling money.
She controlled people.
Darius opened the folder again.
“There’s more.””
Marcus immediately stood.
“No.””
Darius ignored him.
“There’s a reason the account required two signatures.””
I looked at my father.
“Why?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Darius did.
“Because your mother didn’t trust one person.””
My heart sank.
“One person?””
Darius looked at Marcus.
“She specifically changed the account after discovering something.””
The words hung there.
I looked at my father.
“What did she discover?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Jordan…”
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“I’m done being the last person to know.””
The city lights reflected against the windows.
Everyone stood frozen.
Finally, Marcus spoke.
“Your mother found out Vanessa had been moving money.””
My eyes went to Vanessa.
“But she wasn’t the only one.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at Darius.
Then at the documents.
Then at me.
“Your mother changed the account because she believed someone close to us was helping her.””
The room went quiet.
I looked around.
At Vanessa.
At Darius.
At Brielle.
At my father.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Someone who had access.
Then my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
A message appeared on the screen.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
My blood ran cold.
*Stop asking questions about your mother.*
I looked up.
May you like
Because before I could even react, another message appeared.
*Your father already knows what happened.*
