Chapter 10: The Person Behind the Door

“Looking for something?””

The voice echoed through the narrow storage hallway.

Marcus froze.

He knew that voice.

Not because he wanted to.

Because it had followed him through years of his life.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

Her cream blouse was wrinkled now.

Her perfect appearance was gone.

For the first time, she looked like someone who had been running.

Evelyn immediately moved Lily behind her.

“What are you doing here?””

Vanessa looked past her.

At the boxes.

At the open folders.

At the letter in Marcus’s hand.

Her face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You found it.””

Marcus stared.

“You knew.””

Vanessa stepped inside.

“I knew this day might come.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

She looked around the storage unit.

“It’s not.””

Marcus’s voice became sharper.

“How did you know we were here?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

That silence told him enough.

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“You followed us.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I needed to know what you found.””

“You mean what Nia left behind.””

The name hit Vanessa.

She looked away.

Marcus noticed.

Every time someone said Nia’s name, Vanessa reacted.

Like the past was standing beside her.

“Why?”” Marcus asked.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because you don’t understand what you’re holding.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

Her voice became emotional.

“You don’t.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Her expression softened for half a second.

Then hardened again.

“Not here.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“This involves my family.””

Evelyn’s voice was cold.

“This involves a child who was afraid to speak.””

Vanessa flinched.

Marcus noticed.

“Why did Lily think you would send her away?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I never meant it like that.””

“Then how did you mean it?””

She had no answer.

Marcus held up the letter.

“Nia said you were controlling her.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Nia didn’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Before.””

Marcus stared.

“Before what?””

Vanessa looked toward the boxes.

“Before everything fell apart.””

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“Convenient.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“Marcus, you need to listen to me.””

“I listened to you for years.””

The sentence hurt.

Vanessa looked like she had been slapped.

“I believed everything you told me.””

“I know.””

“And now I find out you hid documents, tracked my daughter, and knew about Nia’s warnings.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I was trying to fix it.””

“Fix what?””

She looked at Lily.

“That.””

Everyone went silent.

Marcus followed her eyes.

His stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Then opened them.

“I need to show you something.””

“No.””

Marcus stepped back.

“You don’t get to decide what happens next.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I know.””

The honesty surprised him.

“I know I lost that right.””

She reached into her purse.

Evelyn immediately reacted.

“Slowly.””

Vanessa stopped.

She pulled out another document.

Not a weapon.

A photograph.

She handed it to Marcus.

He looked down.

And froze.

It was Nia.

Holding a baby.

A newborn.

Lily.

Marcus looked confused.

“What is this?””

Vanessa said nothing.

He turned the photo over.

A date was written on the back.

A date that didn’t match what he remembered.

Evelyn saw his expression.

“What?””

Marcus looked up.

“The date.””

His voice became weak.

“This was taken before Nia disappeared.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at the picture again.

“She looks happy.””

Vanessa looked away.

“She was.””

That answer surprised him.

“Then why did she leave?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

She couldn’t.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because she found out someone was lying.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at him.

The answer sat between them.

But she didn’t say it.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps again.

Not Vanessa.

Someone else.

Everyone turned.

The woman’s voice from the phone came from outside.

“Marcus!””

The attorney.

She appeared at the end of the hallway.

Her face was pale.

She looked at Vanessa.

Then immediately stopped.

“No.””

Vanessa turned.

The two women stared at each other.

Like they had been waiting years for this moment.

Marcus looked between them.

“You know each other.””

The attorney didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“She was there.””

Marcus frowned.

“Where?””

The attorney swallowed.

“The night Nia disappeared.””

The storage unit went silent.

Marcus stared.

“You were there?””

The woman looked at Vanessa.

Then at Marcus.

“Yes.””

Her voice shook.

“And Vanessa wasn’t alone.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Don’t.””

The attorney ignored her.

“She had someone helping her.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Who?””

The attorney opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Because outside the storage unit, another sound appeared.

A car door closing.

Someone else had arrived.

The attorney whispered:

“Too late.””

Marcus looked toward the entrance.

“Who is that?””

The woman looked terrified.

May you like

And answered:

“The person Vanessa was protecting.””
