Chapter 13: The Brother Behind the Secret

“Why is everyone here?””

The voice stopped the room.

Marcus turned slowly.

The man standing at the entrance looked older than he remembered, but not unfamiliar.

Gray hair.

Dark jacket.

A calm expression that didn’t match the tension filling the storage unit.

Vanessa’s brother.

Adrian.

Marcus stared.

“Adrian?””

The man smiled faintly.

“Marcus.””

The familiarity of his voice made Marcus’s stomach tighten.

Because Adrian wasn’t a stranger.

He wasn’t some hidden enemy from the past.

He had been at family dinners.

He had attended birthdays.

He had held Lily when she was a baby.

He had been trusted.

And that was the worst part.

Evelyn stepped closer to Marcus.

“Is this the man you were talking about?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“You always were terrible at keeping promises.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“I kept my promise to Nia.””

Adrian smiled.

“No.””

He looked around the storage unit.

“You betrayed her.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Nobody answered.

His patience finally broke.

“No more.””

His voice echoed.

“No more secrets. No more half-truths. I want every answer now.””

Adrian looked at him calmly.

“You really haven’t changed.””

Marcus stared.

“What does that mean?””

“You always believed people were good until they gave you a reason not to.””

“And you used that.””

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

Marcus stepped forward.

“You forged my signature.””

Silence.

Vanessa looked down.

Daniel watched Adrian carefully.

Adrian didn’t deny it.

That was enough.

Marcus shook his head.

“How?””

Adrian sighed.

“You make it sound worse than it was.””

“Worse?””

Marcus laughed once.

“My daughter was almost taken from me.””

Adrian looked toward Lily.

“She was never going to be taken.””

Evelyn immediately stepped in.

“Don’t you dare.””

Adrian looked at her.

“She was going to be protected.””

“From who?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Marcus noticed.

“You still think you’re the hero.””

Adrian’s face changed.

A small crack.

“You don’t understand what Nia was doing.””

Daniel interrupted.

“No. You don’t understand what you did.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You weren’t there.””

“I was.””

The two men stared at each other.

Marcus felt the weight of years between them.

“Tell me about that night.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian said:

“Nia discovered the paperwork.””

Marcus frowned.

“What paperwork?””

“The custody documents.””

The same documents that started everything.

Adrian continued.

“She realized someone had been preparing to challenge her rights as Lily’s mother.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then Adrian.

“Who?””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“She thought it was Vanessa.””

Vanessa looked up.

“I told you I wasn’t.””

Adrian ignored her.

“But she was wrong.””

Marcus froze.

“Then who was it?””

Adrian looked directly at him.

“You.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Nia found documents showing you were connected.””

“That’s impossible.””

“She thought you were involved.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

His voice broke.

“No, I wasn’t.””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Nia figured it out.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked nervous.

Daniel continued.

“She realized Marcus’s name was being used without his knowledge.””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“You framed me.””

Adrian said nothing.

“You made it look like I signed those papers.””

Still nothing.

Marcus felt sick.

“Why?””

Adrian looked away.

“Because I needed control.””

Evelyn stared.

“Control over what?””

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“She was losing everything.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Adrian continued.

“She wanted Marcus to herself.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She looked devastated.

“I never asked him to do that.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“You didn’t have to.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Adrian…”

“You were afraid Nia would come back.””

The sentence hit.

Marcus turned.

“Come back?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I was afraid.””

The confession was barely audible.

Marcus stared.

“Afraid of what?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“That she would take her away.””

Nobody moved.

Because finally, after all the lies, there was something honest.

Vanessa wasn’t protecting Lily.

She was protecting herself.

Marcus shook his head.

“You let him destroy everything because you were afraid?””

Vanessa cried silently.

“I thought I could fix it.””

Evelyn’s expression softened slightly.

Not forgiveness.

Understanding.

“You kept making it worse.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

Adrian looked annoyed.

“Enough.””

Everyone turned.

His calm mask returned.

“You’re all acting like this is some tragedy.””

Marcus stared.

“It is.””

“No.””

Adrian looked at Lily.

“It was necessary.””

Marcus moved instantly.

Evelyn held his arm.

“Marcus.””

But his eyes never left Adrian.

“You are never going near my daughter again.””

Adrian smiled.

“You still don’t know everything.””

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Adrian reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Marcus froze.

Another envelope.

Another secret.

“I have the final piece.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Adrian, no.””

He looked at her.

“You should have listened to me.””

Marcus stared at the envelope.

“What is that?””

Adrian smiled.

“The truth Nia never wanted you to find.””

May you like

He held it up.

“And the reason she disappeared.””
