The Tracker Under Her Shirt / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2: The Name on the Paper

The folded document felt heavier than paper should have felt.

Evelyn stood in the middle of the living room, holding it carefully between her fingers.

Lily remained behind her, one hand wrapped around the fabric of Evelyn’s coat.

Marcus stared at the document.

Vanessa stared at Evelyn.

Nobody looked at each other.

Because everyone understood one thing.

That paper mattered.

“Mom,” Marcus said slowly, “open it.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Marcus, don’t do this.””

His eyes moved toward her.

“Don’t do what?””

“Create a problem because your mother is emotional.””

Evelyn looked up.

“My granddaughter had a tracking device hidden under her shirt.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

For once, she had no immediate answer.

Evelyn unfolded the paper.

The first thing she noticed was the official heading.

Court documents.

Legal language.

A case number.

Marcus moved closer.

“What is that?””

Evelyn didn’t answer immediately.

She scanned the page.

The room seemed to shrink around her.

“Mom?””

She looked at Marcus.

“There’s a court heading.””

His expression changed.

“A court heading?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Evelyn, you don’t understand what you’re reading.””

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa didn’t.

That was the problem.

She didn’t explain.

She reached for the document.

Evelyn moved it away.

“No.””

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharper.

“That belongs to my family.””

Evelyn looked at Lily.

Then back at Vanessa.

“You mean the child you threatened?””

Marcus flinched.

“Vanessa.””

She turned toward him.

“What?””

For the first time, Marcus sounded different.

Not passive.

Not uncertain.

Angry.

“What did Lily mean when she said you’d send her away?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She’s seven. She doesn’t understand adult conversations.””

“Then explain the tracker.””

Vanessa looked away.

A small movement.

A guilty movement.

Marcus saw it.

Evelyn saw it.

Lily saw it.

And suddenly the child who had been afraid all day looked less afraid.

Because someone finally believed her.

Evelyn unfolded the paper further.

There were several lines.

Names.

Dates.

Legal terms.

She read silently.

Then stopped.

Marcus noticed.

“What?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

“Marcus…”

Something in her voice made him nervous.

“What?””

Evelyn turned the document slightly.

“Who is Nia Carter?””

Marcus froze.

The name hit him like a physical blow.

The room became silent.

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“Nobody,” Vanessa said quickly.

Marcus looked at her.

“Nobody?””

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Evelyn looked between them.

“Marcus?””

He didn’t answer.

He was staring at the name.

Nia Carter.

A name he had not heard spoken in years.

A name buried under memories he never discussed.

A name connected to a life before Vanessa.

Before this house.

Before Lily.

“Marcus,” Evelyn repeated.

He finally looked at her.

“That’s my first wife.””

Lily looked up.

“Daddy?””

Marcus didn’t hear her.

His eyes stayed on Vanessa.

“My first wife.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“That doesn’t mean anything.””

Evelyn held the document tighter.

“Then why is her name here?””

Nobody moved.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Why is Nia’s name on Lily’s court papers?””

Vanessa’s breathing changed.

Small.

Fast.

Almost invisible.

But Evelyn noticed.

A person could lie with words.

But the body always told the truth.

Marcus reached for the document.

Vanessa reached for it too.

Their hands stopped inches apart.

“Give me that paper,” Vanessa said.

“No.””

The answer surprised everyone.

Because Marcus had finally said it.

Not angrily.

Not loudly.

Just firmly.

“No.””

Vanessa stared at him.

For the first time, she looked like she didn’t recognize the man standing in front of her.

Marcus looked down at Lily.

Then at the tracker on the table.

Then back at Vanessa.

“What have you been hiding from me?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Evelyn noticed something else.

A second page.

Folded behind the court document.

A page Lily had not shown them.

A page Vanessa clearly did not want them to find.

And at the top of that page was another name.

A name that made Evelyn’s blood run cold.
