Chapter 12: The Betrayal Inside the Family
Marcus couldn’t speak.
The name on the page burned into his mind.
A name he had never expected.
A name connected to his own family.
“No.””
He shook his head.
Daniel watched him carefully.
“I know it’s difficult.””
“No.””
Marcus stepped back.
“You’re wrong.””
Daniel didn’t argue.
That scared Marcus more.
“You’re not even denying it.””
“Because I saw the evidence.””
Marcus looked down at the paper.
The signature.
The dates.
The documents.
Everything connected.
Evelyn stepped beside him.
“Marcus.””
He looked at her.
His eyes were full of confusion.
“How could this happen?””
Evelyn had no answer.
Lily looked up.
“Daddy?””
Marcus immediately softened.
He crouched.
“I’m here.””
“Are you leaving?””
The question broke him.
“No.””
He held her hands.
“Never.””
Lily nodded.
But Marcus saw something.
She didn’t fully believe it yet.
And he understood why.
Trust had been broken around her for too long.
Daniel closed the folder.
“There’s more.””
Marcus looked up.
“More?””
“Yes.””
“I don’t think I can handle more.””
Daniel’s expression softened.
“Nia didn’t just leave evidence.””
“What did she leave?””
“A message.””
Marcus frowned.
“A message for who?””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“For her daughter.””
Everyone went still.
Lily?
Daniel reached into the folder and removed a small recording device.
Old.
Simple.
Protected inside plastic.
Marcus stared.
“She made that?””
Daniel nodded.
“She knew she might not get another chance.””
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus noticed.
“Did you know about this?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
His face changed.
“You knew Nia left something for Lily?””
“Yes.””
“And you kept it from us?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I thought I was protecting her.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You keep using that word.””
“I know.””
“Do you even understand what it means anymore?””
Vanessa looked hurt.
Because she did.
Maybe too late.
Daniel placed the device on the table.
“Nia wanted Lily to hear it when she was old enough.””
Lily looked scared.
“Is my mommy on it?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Yes.””
Her eyes filled.
“Can I hear her?””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew.
This was a moment that could change everything.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
She nodded.
He looked at Daniel.
“Play it.””
Daniel pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman’s voice.
A voice Marcus hadn’t heard in years.
“Nobody should have to leave a message like this.””
Marcus covered his mouth.
Nia.
Alive in sound.
Alive in memory.
Lily moved closer.
“Hi, Lily.””
The little girl froze.
The voice continued.
“If you’re hearing this, it means I couldn’t be there to tell you myself.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
A tear fell.
Nia’s voice continued.
“I need you to know one thing.””
A pause.
“You were never unwanted.””
Lily started crying quietly.
Marcus held her.
“You were the best thing that ever happened to me.””
The room stayed still.
Then Nia said:
“And Marcus…”
Marcus looked up.
Her voice changed.
Softer.
“I’m sorry.””
He stopped breathing.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you everything.””
A crack of emotion entered her voice.
“But I was afraid someone would use your love against you.””
Daniel watched Marcus.
Nia continued:
“The person who betrayed us is closer than you think.””
Everyone looked around.
Vanessa.
Evelyn.
Daniel.
Marcus.
The recording continued.
“Marcus, if you’re hearing this…”
Static interrupted.
Then Nia’s voice returned.
“Trust the person who has been protecting Lily.””
The recording ended.
Silence.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because everyone was thinking the same thing.
The person protecting Lily.
The person Nia trusted.
The person who had hidden secrets.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“It was never me.””
Marcus turned.
Vanessa looked at the recording device.
Her face filled with fear.
“It was my brother.””
The room went completely still.
Evelyn frowned.
“Your brother?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
And then the front door of the storage hallway opened.
A familiar voice called out:
“Vanessa?””
Everyone froze.
Because the voice belonged to the man whose name was on the document.
The man who had been hiding in the shadows.
The man Nia feared.
May you like
And the man Marcus had known his entire life.
“Why is everyone here?””
