Chapter 6: The Truth Vanessa Buried

The room went silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that came before something broke.

Marcus stared at the sentence.

Over and over.

Do not let Vanessa raise my daughter.

His fingers tightened around the edge of the coffee table.

“No.””

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Vanessa shook her head.

“She was lying.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone had the same question.

Why would Nia write that?

Why would she specifically name Vanessa?

Marcus looked at his wife.

The woman who had comforted him.

The woman who had helped him rebuild his life.

The woman he trusted.

“Tell me she’s wrong.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Marcus.””

“Tell me she’s wrong.””

Her silence was louder than an admission.

Evelyn watched her carefully.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at Evelyn.

“What?””

“Why would Nia write your name?””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Because she hated me.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That’s not enough.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“You want the truth?””

Everyone froze.

“Yes,” Marcus said.

Her face changed.

The calm mask disappeared.

“You want the truth?””

She pointed at the papers.

“You don’t know what Nia did.””

Marcus stared.

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Then away.

“She was dangerous.””

Evelyn immediately responded.

“That’s not an answer.””

“It is.””

“No. It’s an accusation.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“She ruined everything.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa walked toward the sofa.

“She knew things.””

“What things?””

Vanessa stopped.

For a second, she looked like she regretted saying anything.

Then she continued.

“Things about this family.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“You’re still hiding behind vague words.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“She knew you weren’t Lily’s biological father.””

The sentence landed like a storm.

Nobody moved.

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Lily looked confused.

Evelyn’s face changed.

“Vanessa.””

But Vanessa kept going.

“She knew before you did.””

Marcus’s voice became quiet.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

He looked at Lily.

Then back at Vanessa.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I’m saying Nia kept secrets.””

Marcus shook his head.

“My daughter…”

He stopped.

Because suddenly every memory felt uncertain.

Every conversation.

Every document.

Every unexplained moment.

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daddy?””

Marcus immediately turned.

The look on his face softened.

“No, baby.””

He walked toward her.

“Don’t worry.””

But Lily stepped back slightly.

That tiny movement hurt him.

Because she was afraid.

Not of the truth.

Of losing him.

Evelyn pulled Lily close.

“Marcus, whatever this means, she is still your daughter.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I know.””

And he did.

The word wasn’t about biology.

It was about love.

But Vanessa saw the doubt.

And she used it.

“She never told you because she knew you’d leave.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Stop.””

“I’m trying to protect you.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You’re trying to protect yourself.””

Vanessa went quiet.

Evelyn looked at the documents again.

“There’s something missing.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

“The court papers.””

She pointed.

“These documents don’t explain everything.””

Vanessa looked nervous.

Evelyn noticed.

“You know what they mean.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Then why were you tracking Lily?””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Why did you hide these papers?””

Silence.

“Why did Nia warn me about you?””

Nothing.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Answer her.””

Vanessa’s eyes moved between them.

Then she slowly reached into her purse.

Everyone froze.

“What are you doing?”” Marcus asked.

She pulled out a small key.

Not a phone.

Not a weapon.

A key.

Evelyn frowned.

“What is that?””

Vanessa looked at the documents.

Then at Lily.

And her expression changed.

“I was hoping I would never have to show you this.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Show us what?””

Vanessa held the key tightly.

“The reason Nia disappeared.””

Evelyn’s heart raced.

Marcus stared.

“Where did you get that?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked directly at Lily.

And whispered:

“Because your mother left something behind.””

Lily’s face went pale.

“My mother?””

Marcus froze.

Because Vanessa had never called Nia Lily’s mother before.

Not once.

Then Vanessa placed the key on the table beside the tracker.

And Evelyn noticed something carved into the metal.

A single word.

A name.

CARTER.

Marcus reached toward it.

But before he touched it, Vanessa said:

“If you open what this unlocks…”

She stopped.

Her voice dropped.

“You’ll find out why Nia never came back.””

Marcus looked at the key.

Then at Vanessa.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

But the fear in her eyes said everything.

And somewhere inside that house, hidden for years, was something Nia Carter had left behind.

Something Vanessa had been terrified they would find. :::
