Chapter 4: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone
Marcus stared at the name.
NIA CARTER.
The letters on the page looked impossible.
Like a mistake.
Like something someone had printed by accident.
But Evelyn was holding the document.
The court heading was real.
The signature was real.
And Vanessa’s terrified expression was real.
“Marcus?”” Lily whispered.
He didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed locked on the paper.
“Nia is dead.””
The words came out slowly.
Almost like he was trying to convince himself.
Evelyn looked at him.
“You’re sure?””
Marcus swallowed.
“I went to the funeral.””
The room became quiet.
Vanessa pulled her wrist away from his hand.
“She doesn’t matter.””
Marcus turned.
For years, Vanessa had been the person who knew everything about his life.
Every wound.
Every regret.
Every memory he tried to bury.
But now she was standing in front of him, looking like someone caught inside a lie.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa looked at the document.
“I said she doesn’t matter anymore.””
Marcus stared.
“She’s listed as Lily’s legal mother.””
“That paperwork is old.””
“Old paperwork doesn’t explain why my daughter has it hidden in her sock.””
Vanessa’s mouth tightened.
“You’re letting your mother manipulate you.””
Evelyn almost laughed.
“Manipulate him?””
She pointed toward the table.
“There is a tracking device on that table.””
Marcus looked at it.
Then at Vanessa.
“You put that on Lily?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I already told you. It was for safety.””
“Stop saying that.””
His voice surprised everyone.
Even himself.
Vanessa became silent.
Marcus had spent years avoiding conflict.
He hated arguments.
He hated raising his voice.
He hated making people uncomfortable.
But seeing Lily standing behind Evelyn, afraid of her own home, changed something.
“What safety?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa looked away.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“You don’t get to use my daughter’s fear as an excuse.””
Lily watched him carefully.
Like she was trying to figure out if this version of her father was real.
Evelyn noticed.
She placed a protective hand on Lily’s shoulder.
Marcus looked at his daughter.
“I’m sorry.””
Lily blinked.
“For what?””
“For not seeing it.””
Her face softened slightly.
“You didn’t know.””
Those four words hurt him more than anger would have.
Because they sounded like forgiveness.
And he didn’t deserve it yet.
Evelyn folded the court document.
“Marcus, you need to tell us what happened with Nia.””
He looked toward the window.
The bright sunlight suddenly seemed too harsh.
“Nia and I were married when we were younger.””
Vanessa looked irritated.
“This is not relevant.””
“It is now.””
Marcus didn’t even look at her.
“Nia and I had problems.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Every marriage does.””
“But ours got worse.””
He walked slowly toward the sofa.
“She left.””
Lily sat quietly.
Listening.
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“She was struggling. She said she needed time away.””
“Did she take Lily?”” Evelyn asked.
Marcus froze.
“No.””
That answer came too quickly.
Evelyn noticed.
“Why?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because Lily wasn’t born yet.””
The room stopped.
Evelyn looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus’s face changed.
Like he had just realized the truth himself.
“Wait.””
He took the paper from Evelyn.
His hands shook slightly.
He looked at the dates.
The court filing date.
The custody reference.
The names.
“No.””
Vanessa suddenly moved.
“Marcus, don’t.””
He looked up.
“What?””
Her silence answered.
Marcus stared at her.
“What are you not telling me?””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You need to calm down.””
“No.””
He held the paper tighter.
“You knew about this.””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
“You knew about Nia.””
Still nothing.
“You knew about these documents.””
Her eyes moved away.
Marcus took a step back.
“How long?””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“Marcus…”
“How long have you known?””
The silence lasted too long.
Evelyn whispered, “Oh my God.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
“From her.””
Marcus looked at the name again.
“Nia?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She wasn’t who you thought she was.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“That’s convenient.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You don’t know anything.””
“Then tell us.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Marcus noticed.
And that scared him more than anything.
Because Vanessa always had an answer.
She always had an explanation.
But now she had silence.
Lily slowly tugged on Evelyn’s sleeve.
“Grandma.””
Evelyn looked down.
“What is it?””
Lily hesitated.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa’s face changed immediately.
“No.””
The word came out too fast.
Too scared.
Marcus looked at Lily.
“What else, baby?””
Lily reached into her pocket.
Her fingers trembled.
She pulled out a small envelope.
And Vanessa whispered:
“Don’t open that.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Because the envelope already had a name written across the front.
And it wasn’t Lily’s.
It wasn’t Marcus’s.

It was addressed to:
EVELYN CARTER.
