Chapter 11: The Truth Nia Tried to Save

Nobody moved.

The storage hallway felt smaller with every passing second.

Marcus stood between the boxes and the doorway.

Evelyn held Lily’s hand.

The attorney looked toward the entrance like she expected someone dangerous to appear.

Vanessa looked defeated.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Defeated.

Marcus noticed.

“Who is coming?””

Nobody answered.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

For once, she didn’t pretend.

“I don’t know what will happen.””

That scared him.

Because Vanessa always acted like she knew everything.

But now she looked afraid.

The sound of footsteps grew closer.

The attorney whispered:

“We need to leave.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Not until I get answers.””

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

The attorney looked at him.

“Your wife was right.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“Nia.””

The name made him turn.

“She was right to hide things from you.””

Pain crossed his face.

“Why?””

“Because she thought you would try to protect everyone.””

“And?””

“And she was afraid you would get hurt.””

Marcus looked at the boxes.

The letters.

The evidence.

“All this time…”

He swallowed.

“She thought I was weak.””

The attorney shook her head.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“She thought you were kind.””

The words landed harder.

Because Marcus knew kindness had become the reason he missed everything.

The reason he trusted too easily.

The reason Lily suffered silently.

A shadow moved near the entrance.

Everyone turned.

But nobody entered.

A voice came from outside.

“Marcus Carter.””

His blood went cold.

The voice was unfamiliar.

But confident.

“You’ve spent a long time looking for answers.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Someone who knew Nia better than you did.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You know this person.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“Yes.””

The person outside laughed softly.

“Still protecting him?””

Marcus looked confused.

“Protecting me from who?””

No answer.

The attorney grabbed his arm.

“We need to go.””

Marcus pulled away.

“No.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“No more secrets.””

The person outside stepped closer.

Then finally appeared.

A man.

Older.

Calm.

Holding a folder.

He looked directly at Marcus.

“My name is Daniel Reed.””

Marcus stared.

The name meant nothing.

But Vanessa’s reaction did.

She looked like she had seen a ghost.

“Daniel.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“You remember.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then back at Marcus.

“I’m the person who helped Nia when nobody else would.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Helped her do what?””

Daniel opened the folder.

“Protect Lily.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Stop.””

Daniel ignored her.

“Nia discovered something years ago.””

Marcus looked at the documents.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then spoke carefully.

“Someone was trying to change Lily’s legal identity.””

The room froze.

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Because if Lily was no longer connected to Nia…”

He paused.

“She could be controlled.””

Marcus felt sick.

“No.””

Vanessa immediately said:

“I never wanted that.””

Everyone turned.

It was the first time she had admitted something.

Marcus stared at her.

“You knew.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I knew someone was trying to do something.””

“Who?””

She looked at Daniel.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You do.””

Vanessa became silent.

Marcus looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A legal form.

And a signature.

Marcus took it.

Then stopped breathing.

Because the signature was his.

“What?””

He stared.

“This is my signature.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“I never signed this.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

And that was the answer.

Marcus’s voice dropped.

“Someone forged my name.””

Daniel nodded.

“And Nia found out.””

The room went silent.

Evelyn looked at Lily.

Then at Marcus.

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered:

“The person who did this is the reason Nia disappeared.””

Marcus tightened his grip on the paper.

“Tell me.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then said:

“You’re asking the wrong person.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel continued:

“The person who destroyed Nia’s life wasn’t Vanessa.””

Vanessa looked shocked.

Marcus froze.

“Then who?””

Daniel slowly opened the folder.

The final page was visible.

A name.

A name Marcus recognized.

A name that made his entire body go cold.

May you like

Because it belonged to someone he trusted.

Someone who had been in his life for years.
