Chapter 14: The Truth Nia Left Behind
The envelope remained in Adrian’s hand.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed normally.
Because after everything Marcus had learned, he thought there was nothing left that could surprise him.
He was wrong.
“What is inside?””
Marcus asked.
Adrian looked at him.
“Something Nia wrote.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You’re afraid.””
“I know what that is.””
Marcus looked between them.
“You both know?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I saw it once.””
Marcus frowned.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Nia made me promise.””
Marcus looked at the envelope.
“What could be so important that she hid it from me?””
Daniel’s expression softened.
“The truth about Lily.””
Marcus looked at his daughter.
Lily was holding Evelyn’s hand.
Afraid.
Confused.
But listening.
Marcus stepped toward Adrian.
“Give it to me.””
Adrian didn’t move.
“Before you read it, you need to understand something.””
“I’m done understanding.””
Adrian ignored the anger.
“Nia loved you.””
Marcus froze.
The words hurt.
Because he still loved her too.
Even after everything.
Even after years.
Adrian continued.
“She never wanted to hurt you.””
“Then why did she leave?””
Adrian looked down.
“Because she believed someone close to you was dangerous.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Then Adrian.
“Who?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Instead, he handed over the envelope.
Marcus took it.
His fingers shook.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was Nia’s.
He knew immediately.
Marcus,
If you are reading this, then you finally know enough to ask the right questions.
His eyes filled.
Evelyn looked away, giving him privacy.
Marcus continued.
I need you to know that Lily was never the reason I left.
A tear fell.
She was the reason I stayed alive.
Marcus stopped.
He pressed the paper against his hand.
I discovered someone was changing documents connected to our family. Someone was trying to make it appear that I was not Lily’s legal mother.
I thought it was Vanessa.
I was wrong.
Marcus looked up.
Adrian watched him.
He continued reading.
The person behind it was someone who had access to our private information.
Someone who knew our family.
Someone who knew exactly how to make us destroy ourselves.
Marcus’s breathing changed.
There was another page.
He turned it.
The next words made him stop.
I need you to listen carefully.
Vanessa did something wrong.
Marcus looked at her.
But she was not the person who started this.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Adrian looked away.
Nia continued.
She was afraid.
She made choices from fear.
But someone used her fear as a weapon.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
For the first time, he saw her differently.
Not innocent.
Not forgiven.
But not the monster he thought she was.
The next line shook him.
The person who manipulated Vanessa was Adrian.
The room went silent.
Marcus looked up.
Adrian’s expression changed.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Vanessa whispered:
“Nia knew.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
Marcus moved back.
“No.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
The same word.
The same strength.
But this time, it was different.
This time, Marcus wasn’t protecting himself.
He was protecting Lily.
Nia’s letter continued.
Adrian believed he was protecting our family.
But he confused control with love.
Marcus looked at Adrian.
The man who had smiled at birthdays.
The man who had offered advice.
The man who had acted like family.
Nia’s final paragraph was shorter.
But it destroyed him.
If something happens to me, please don’t let Lily grow up believing she was abandoned.
Tell her I loved her.
Tell her I fought for her.
Marcus couldn’t continue.
Evelyn gently touched his shoulder.
“Marcus.””
He handed the letter to her.
Then walked toward Lily.
He knelt.
“Lily.””
She looked at him.
“Your mom loved you.””
The little girl’s face crumpled.
“She did?””
“Yes.””
Marcus nodded.
“She fought for you.””
A tear rolled down Lily’s cheek.
“Then why didn’t she come back?””
Marcus looked down.
Because that was the question he had asked himself for years.
He didn’t know the answer.
Not completely.
But he knew one thing.
“Because she was trying to protect you.””
Lily cried.
Marcus hugged her.
Behind them, Vanessa stood frozen.
Adrian looked furious.
“You think this changes anything?””
Marcus turned.
“Yes.””
Adrian laughed.
“You have no idea what Nia was capable of.””
“No.””
Marcus held Lily’s hand.
“I know what you were capable of.””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
Then he pulled out his phone.
Everyone noticed.
“What are you doing?””
Adrian smiled.
“Ending this.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Adrian looked at him.
“No.””
He pressed a button.
“I’m correcting one.””
A second later, Marcus’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He looked at the screen.
Nobody spoke.
Then a message appeared.
One sentence.
One sentence that made Marcus’s blood run cold.
May you like
Because it came from a number that belonged to someone who should have been impossible to contact.
Nia Carter.
