Chapter 11: The Call From The Past
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The entire room felt frozen.
Then Lily’s voice broke the silence.
“Daddy?””
I looked at her.
She was standing there with Naomi, holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her eyes were wide.
“Was that Mommy?””
I couldn’t lie.
Not to her.
I slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
Her mouth opened slightly.
“Mommy is alive?””
The question destroyed me.
I knelt in front of her.
“Baby…”
“Is she coming home?””
I looked away.
Because I didn’t know.
And that was the hardest answer a father could give.
“I don’t know.””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“But she wants me?””
I pulled her into my arms.
“Yes.””
My voice cracked.
“She always wanted you.””
That night, after Lily finally slept, I sat with Jordan and Naomi at the table.
The same table where everything started.
Except now every person sitting there knew the truth was bigger than we imagined.
“We need to find Claire,” I said.
Naomi nodded.
“She’ll contact us again.””
“How do you know?””
“Because she finally broke her silence.””
Jordan looked at the phone.
“She sounded scared.””
“She is,” Naomi said.
“Of Vanessa?””
Naomi hesitated.
Then answered:
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“But you think there’s more.””
She didn’t deny it.
“I think Vanessa didn’t act alone.””
The room went quiet.
The same sentence Vanessa had said.
Someone you trust.
I looked at Jordan.
“Who else knew?””
He thought.
“Your friends?””
“No.””
“Family?””
I shook my head.
“My parents are gone.””
Naomi looked at the hallway.
“Someone inside your life.””
I hated how that sounded.
Because it meant everyone became a suspect.
The next morning, I went through everything again.
Claire’s letters.
The documents.
The messages.
The timeline.
And then I noticed something.
A name.
Buried in one of the old documents.
A witness signature.
I stared.
My heart started racing.
Because I knew that name.
Daniel Brooks.
My best friend.
My business partner.
The man who had stood beside me after Claire died.
The man who told me to trust Vanessa.
I immediately called him.
No answer.
I called again.
Still nothing.
Then a message appeared.
Sorry. Busy. We’ll talk later.
Too casual.
Too normal.
I showed Naomi.
Her expression changed.
“You know him?””
“Yes.””
“How well?””
“Almost twenty years.””
She looked at me.
“Marcus.””
I knew what she was thinking.
“No.””
“You said that about Vanessa.””
The words hurt.
Because she was right.
I had ignored signs before.
I couldn’t do it again.
I drove to Daniel’s office.
He wasn’t there.
His assistant said he left suddenly.
“Do you know where?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“No.””
I turned to leave.
Then I noticed something on the receptionist’s desk.
A photograph.
A company event.
Years ago.
Daniel.
Me.
Vanessa.
And Claire.
I picked it up.
Something felt wrong.
Claire and Daniel were standing too close.
Not romantically.
Like they were having a serious conversation.
I turned the picture over.
A handwritten note was on the back.
Claire’s handwriting.
Marcus,
I need to tell you something about Daniel.
My heart dropped.
I searched the office.
Not because I wanted to invade my friend’s privacy.
Because I needed the truth.
In the bottom drawer of Daniel’s desk, I found a locked box.
Inside was a stack of documents.
And one envelope.
My name was written on it.
Marcus.
I opened it.
The first line made my blood run cold.
I should have told you years ago that Vanessa wasn’t the only person who betrayed you.
I kept reading.
Daniel had known.
He knew Vanessa was manipulating Claire.
He knew about the threats.
He knew Claire was trying to contact me.
And he stayed silent.
But the last page was the worst.
Because it explained why.
Daniel wasn’t protecting Vanessa.
He was protecting me.
The final sentence read:
If Marcus finds out what I did, he will never forgive me.
I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
Daniel was standing in the doorway.
His face was pale.
“Marcus.””
I held up the letter.
“You knew.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“Because I was the one who introduced Vanessa to Claire.””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
“What did you just say?””
Daniel looked broken.
“I didn’t know what she was planning.””
“You brought her into our lives.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His eyes filled.
“Because she asked me for help.””
My anger rose.
“Help with what?””
Daniel looked at the letter.
Then at me.
“To get you back.””
I froze.
“What?””
May you like
He swallowed.
“But I didn’t know she would destroy everything.””
